how long after the waters brake does the first pup usually arrive?
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 18:41 UTC
Just looking at the time since you posted, if the water sack has been pushed out the first whelp is imminent, taking it your first pup is here?
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 18:52 UTC
no pup yet, she is pushing slowly, keeps stoping and starting, there is still fluid coming from her but nothing has been passed yet
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 19:00 UTC
Lovely jubbly, :-)

First pup can take anything from 5 mins of pushing to 1.5hrs. Hope she is like my girl and just a few minutes each time.

Good luck, should be here soon. :-) DON'T MOVE!
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:11 UTC
she keeps doing 4or5 pushes then stops for 10 mins, is thisnormal? how long should i allow this to go on? she doesnt seem to be pushing very hard
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:26 UTC
anyone?
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 19:32 UTC
How long has it been now?
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:33 UTC
just over an hour
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:37 UTC
When they really start pushing they are big pushes, if nothing after an 1 hour check it out with your vet if you are worried.  You will see the puppy arriving, it looks like a fluid filled bubble, if that has broken and the fluid has gone, then all you will see will be either legs and head or bum and tail, or tail and back legs.  If legs are hanging out, you wrap a towel round puppy and at each contraction (when the bitch pushes) you pull gently downwards and towards the mothers navel, but only when the bitch has a contraction and very gently, otherwise you will damage pup, if not sure ring vet.
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 19:39 UTC
Have you got your vets number to hand? Keep it ready, take it you are not experienced with breech births etc, don't panic! Give her 30 more minutes, she will rest and then re-start, the pup may be large or breech, after 30 more mins if no pup call your vet and take her in if he/she can't get to you.

Keep calm, everything may well be just fine, but be ready for a vet call, keep an eye on the time, your vet will need to know the time from the first strain.

Fingers crossed, don't stress your girl.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:40 UTC
she isnt having regular contractions or pushing, she will have afew then stop for 10 mins then start again, she doesnt seem to be pushing really hard just a push that lasts around 2 seconds then stops
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:42 UTC
our vets dont have an on call service its the vets-now clinic, i'll see how she goes in the next half hour, this is my first litter, after reading the book of the bitch, the table in the back says my breed are long whelpers
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:46 UTC
The contractions are just like in humans, they start widely spaced apart with resting between and get closer and closer together until pup is born.  You must ring your vet if you are concerned, even if they only advise you that all is well and progressing as they would expect.
- By sunshine [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:48 UTC
Good luck.  Hope you don't need the vet.

You're either having them now, fingers crossed or you have gone to the vets.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 19:56 UTC

Well, your going to have a very busy night, you won't feel tired now, just excited. :-) Quick get a coffee made before the next one.
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 03.06.10 20:02 UTC
Yep it can be quite mucky, plenty of bath towels.  Great that one has arrived safe and sound, will look back in the morning, by then you will have a lovely litter, don't forget to ring vet if you are at all worried.
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 20:03 UTC
Yes, plenty of mess with whelping, continual for a few days after whelping too. :-)
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 20:04 UTC
he came feet first, the water sack broke on the way out and the cord was detatched when he arrived
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 03.06.10 20:07 UTC
The placenta usually comes later when that happens -but do not worry too much.  Try and count how many placentas you get, I always seem to find one missing, will look back in the morning :).
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 20:33 UTC
should he beable to find the nipple straight away? he has been trying to suckle for the past half hour now but cant find the nipple even with me holding him to it
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 20:44 UTC
It can take a while for pups to learn to latch on and suckle, it's confusing for them, they get lost and can't find where to go and are just as new to this as the dam, just keep trying to place him on a teat when your dam is not cleaning him, put your finger next to the teat and push it to his mouth, he will eventually latch on, probably just as your bitch is getting ready for the next one and you'll have to guide him all over again. :-) Once they know what to do they are well away.
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 20:46 UTC
i think she is getting ready now, i have seen her push a couple of times bit im still waiting for the after birth
- By Carrington Date 03.06.10 20:47 UTC

- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:14 UTC

- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:21 UTC
he is a bit smaller than the second pup and just keeps throwing him self around even when i put him to the nipple he is just throwing him self around and screaming
- By kevinsdog [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:28 UTC
we had one like that in our last litter and had to hand feed it.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:30 UTC
dont give up just keep helping him ,open his mouth and put the nipple in ,i had 1 like this 2years ago and it took 1h keep holding pup at the nipple and helping her on once she got the hang of it she didnt let go LOL X
- By JeanSW Date 03.06.10 22:31 UTC
Do you have your heat pad on and ready?  It won't hurt to keep his temperature up while your girl is busy.  However many bitches I whelp, I am always amazed at how cold newborn pups feel.  After being in the warm for so long!  :-)

How does your girl seem?
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:36 UTC
iv got a box with a water bottle in it, she is pushing again so number 3 wont be long now, i'll keep putting him on but he has had the nipple in him mouth afew times now but just keeps fighting an letting go, pup 2 has had every nipple going and you can see his tongue around the nipple where as pup 1 doesnt wrap the tongue around at all
- By white lilly [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:37 UTC
dont they just jean! this last litter wouldnt stay on the pad LOL they just kept dragging them selfs off to find mum ,little buggers there still the same now :-) were has 5 weeks gone!

sounds like pups are coming abit faster now :-) ,are you taking your girl for oxetosin(sorry about spelling) jab this will help mums milk come in!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:39 UTC
yes really does sound like the girl i had born, but if you can like some1 said check his pallet x
- By JeanSW Date 03.06.10 22:45 UTC

> were has 5 weeks gone!

:-)  :-)

Know what you mean!  My top girl had her last and final litter 6 weeks ago.  So, I was always going to keep them, even if she had giraffes!  :-)

Two little darlings, running round the living room playing with anything and everything, and then flopping where they drop, and I have to put them back in the whelping box so they don't get stepped on.

I love the way they savage each other as if they are great killers, but all you get is spit on the coats!  The entertainment value is ace, and I waste far too much time enjoying their exploits.  Then realise that the washing up is still in the bowl, and the water has gone cold!  Will have to sack the maid!  :-)

Back to work next week :-(  so my dog sitter will get all the fun!
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:50 UTC
iv had my finger in his mouth and everything feels normal, i will be phoning the vet in the morning to get them checked over, i have had the little one on the nipple but he is more like licking it and opening him mouth every time he tries to suck as well as fighting at the same time, he wants it just doesnt know what to do with it, she has got a little bit of milk coming through now, just waiting for pup 3 to show its face
- By white lilly [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:53 UTC
i know what you mean :) my house is a tip ,pups are going out to play tomorrow :) they are now crying to get out ,my living room has become very boring to them now LOL ,even tho there puppy run is massive and only 3 pups im so looking forward to watching them play with aunty and mum on the garden ;)

any more pups ? hows ;little 1 doing?x
- By cb87 [gb] Date 03.06.10 22:56 UTC
no more yet, shes got up for a little walk around the room, iv put pups in the box with the water bottle untill more arrive as she just got up and left them
- By JeanSW Date 03.06.10 22:59 UTC

> i have had the little one on the nipple but he is more like licking it and opening him mouth every time he tries to suck as well as fighting at the same time, he wants it just doesnt know what to do with it,

Fairly normal in some pups.  Not all take to it easily, but it does sound as if he will get there.  After your lack of sleep in the build up to this night, I bet you are just running on adrenalin now.  In my experience, you won't fall asleep as soon as she has finished, because you will be on such a high!!  :-)  :-)  :-)
