Hi All,
I have a bitch who had her litter of pups last Wednesday (not advertising) by cesarian section. She had a short course of AB's and has been fine eating well, good milk prodcution etc..but today she seems not quite right, she seems quiet and walking as though she is in discomfort, firstly I put this down to perhaps bruising from the Cesar combined with her womb contracting..I know I have had girls in the past who at a week after whelping start digging a lot and seem a bit uncomfortable but it passes. But this bitch isnt doing that, she is just walking about gingerly, I have taken her temp and it was a little higher than normal 39.1 she also seems to be wanting to drink a fair bit too, having had a bitch with Pymoetra in the past the signs are similar which is a worry or I thought she may possibly have an infection of some kind, her scar looks ok though not red or anything like that, she does still seem keen to eat though. I have called the vet and they have told me to bring her in, so we have an appointment for 5.40pm that was the earliest they could give us. I am hoping its nothing too serious?

Yes, you have done the right thing - back to the vets again, possibly needs a longer course of antibiotics, hope it is soon sorted for her.

I agree that you are sensible to err on the side of caution. If it's nothing - fine! But you will feel better in your own mind once she has had the once over by a vet. I would do exactly the same as you.
Well, we ended up going to the vets sooner as an emergency!! she had her dinner about 2.30pm went in to feed the pups, literally 5 mins after eating her dinner she was sick...we got her out the whelping box, she then lied down and started rubbing her face on the ground. When I got her up I was horrified to see that her eyes and muzzle were swelling up before my eyes? So I immediatly called the vet, they told us to bring her down straight away. By the time we got into see the vet, some of the swelling had gone down, it was most definitly like an allergic reaction to something? the vet said did I think she could have been stung but was 99.9% certain she had not been.
So she has given her a shot of AB & anti-inflammatory along with 4 anti hystamine, she did also have a temp when the vet checked. She seems a little calmer now, the swelling has gone down a bit, hopefully the anti hystamines will help with that. The vet said they wanted her back tomorrow and will consider doing a scan just to make sure there isnt anything going on internally such as possible infection/pyometra although having had a bitch with Pyo before apart from the drinking earlier she hasnt been doing that now so hopefully..its just a case of her having a mild infection. The swelling is a complete mystery? Will keep you posted anyway.

What a fright for you. Sounds like an allergic reaction, should be okay with all those drugs inside her!!
Hope that she is better soon and nothing else is found tomorrow.
What's up with all these dogs giving us a fright lately??? I do so hope things return to normal for you. I would suspect a allergic reaction; hopefully the medication will kick in quickly.
My girl ripped up a piece of our brand new lounge carpet to make herself sick on Monday ( I was none too pleased) Turns out whilst on a walk she had picked up a discarded plastic glove which was covered in engine oil. She was rubbing her muzzle, the back of throat swoll up and her gums were red. Scary evening for us.
How very scary, first thought is some sort of insect bite, still possible that is what it was, but could be anything, she may even be allergic to an antibiotic during her c-section, some dogs are.
Fingers crossed for a full recovery, the last thing you or your girl needed at this time.
All the very best.

This is a good example for people that breeding is NOT easy!
I'm pleased that you were so focused on your girls needs. Doesn't bear thinking about if you hadn't done something quickly. Pups being that young, it would have been a nightmare if she had been seriously ill. I hope that she just improves fast, and I wish you Good Luck! :-)
Thanks so much everyone..your certainly right there JeanSW breeding isnt easy in any shape or form even when things do go without any hiccups. Mum seems a lot better in herself so think the medication has done its job, she still has a little puffiness around her face but only a small amount now. she is still eating and keeping it down and seems generally happier in herself so whatever it was...dare I say seems to have passed. We will still take her into the vets today of course just to be on the safe side, the whole swelling thing though is still a mystery I am 9.99% certain she was not bitten as when she goes out into the garden I go with her as I dont want her going under our bushes and having a dig as girls do tend to around this time, I dont want her scar getting any kind of dirt in it. So I watch her like a hawk in the garden, I am sure if something bit her or stung her she would have yelped or something? Whether those symptoms were related to the other stuff that was going on I have no idea, its just all very strange?
