Can anyone recommend a cheap car insurance for a 17 year old (just passed her test) without me having to wade through dozens of web sites or comparison sites?
The car is a 1.2 clio
- By yorkies4eva [gb] Date 26.05.10 12:07 UTC
There isnt really 1 cheap one, it all depends on your circumstances, where the car is parked, her age etc... its difficult to say, for example, when i was 17, i was with norwich union, which was under a grand, which is good for that age, however my sister had a cheaper car, lived in the same house, and norwich union was over a grand for her and she went with someone else... it just depends what mood the site is in i think half the time, i honestly have no idea how they judge it

Swiftcover is good for me, but not sure if they do under 17's, maybe give them a go?

Go onto confused.com  You only have to put all her details in once and they search for the best prices and come back with a list. I use them every year and find it quick, easy and hassle free :-)

At least you have a girl! Terrible for boys, we had a quote of £4,000 for my 19 yr old son. My friends daughter is insured with Admiral and they were very good when she had an accident :(

Good Luck, it's a mine field, I spent ages trawling the compare sites.

I know, boys seem to be like triple the price for car insurance, its ridiculous, girls do get off quite a bit lighter... i my first car was a clio 1.2 and that was with norwich union and i was 17 and i cant remember what it was exactly, but it was definately under a grand, but like i say, they might not be cheap for you, i would go to confused.com and comparethemarket.com - which i find sometimes cheaper, sometimes more expensive than confused.com

Price comparison websites are a great way to find the lowest price for insurance and probably something you will have to do to get a good deal.
NB Add someone older (30-35years old+) as a named driver. this helps bring the price down as they are seen as more responsible than the young driver. I added my dad as a named driver when i first took out insurance even though he never had any intention of driving my car (he had his own!) it just brought the price down.
Also, things like where car is parked, what its used for, if it has had any work done to it (alloys/big exhausts etc) will affect the price too.

CIS insurance are good with certain levels of insurance.  They are quite old fashioned in their ways in that they come to your house and have a chat with you, but the one that I have my old VW campervan insured with them was really nice and in no way pushy.  At the time when I first got it they were charging just over a 100 a month where another company wanted £1,000.00 a month so quite a difference!

I went on my parents insurance which allowed you to tote up your no claims as well. I then went onto my own 3rd pty insurance as i didn't have the best of cars. Once i had a good yrs of no claims and a decent car i well fully comp..

I found that Swindon were the cheapest insurer when I was 17.
I also had a 1.2 Clio :-)

We have our cars with direct line - my daughter, now 21, has a ford Ka 1.3 which is insured in my husband's name - she is a named driver and DL allow her to build her no claims that way. The car stays at our house and I use it while she is at Uni though, we would need to change it to her own insurance if she was the main driver and took it with her to uni, but at least she would have some no claims built up. If its kept at your home and you are also using it, it might be worthwhile doing this.

I found the best advice was through A-plan insurance brokers when sorting out insurance for my daughter.

Personally I think something should be done to help youngsters with the cost of premiums now, no wander there's so many driving around uninsured!!

Great help everyone, thanks.  Got a good quote from Elephant.co.uk.  £1326 just daughter, £1096 for me as an additional driver and £926 to add hubby as well !!!!

That sounds pretty competitive my daughter has hers with quinn as do most of her friends who have just passed they are all around 17. We pay 91.00 per month with me as named driver over 10 months that includes breakdown cover and windscreen cover and is 3rd party. I wouldnt touch fully comp with an older vechicle and new driver now. My son just found out with his bike that was covered fully comp and was stolen that although they were happy to pay out (not quinn another company ) the trick is when you go to re insure you are priced off the road the only quotes he could get were arount £5000 mark for the same bike. Fortunately the bike was found but it has cost him £1000 to get it back on the road but he still has a ncb Apparently one problem is you can get "reasonable" insurance first time but not again with a claim.
Yes biffsmum I can kinda see why people are tempted to go without insurance wouldn't have said that before our experience altough I wouldn't do it. And yes the other temptation as some said is to insure you parent a main driver but that can also be a problem if it not really true. The whole thing is a nightmare and heaven help you if as my daughters boyfriend is the are into customizing the car sorry modding i believe I should say even without increasing engine sizes each extra paint job seems to be another excuse to up the insurance premium

Sorry peeps winge over

Me and my brothers and sis all started with Quinn, they normally are on the cheaper end for youngsters.
- By Staff [gb] Date 28.05.10 11:41 UTC
Just a word of warning about Quinn, they went into Administration at the end of March.  In my job we were not allowed to touch companies that hold insurance with Quinn even before they went into admininistration because they were not financially stable.  I have heard they will honour any claims until people's policies expire but i'd be abit concerned if I was insured with them incase they cannot live up to that statement.
- By furriefriends Date 28.05.10 21:57 UTC
Yes i have heard that but keeping our fingers crossed she can keep out of needing anything from them and then change in December to another company . I dont know how we stand atm or if the refuse to honour something
- By Pookin [gb] Date 29.05.10 09:50 UTC
OMG! Thanks for the heads up Staff, I only have 3rd party, fire and theft with them since I drive a wreck but still...
- By cb87 [gb] Date 31.05.10 21:02 UTC
kwik-fit or adrian flux have always been good for me, i started driving at 20 (3 years ago) and i was paying £600 from kwik-fit for a 1L corsa
- By tina s [gb] Date 01.06.10 17:50 UTC
we had to insure kids vehicles and then add them to our insurance- much cheaper
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 02.06.10 12:08 UTC
Just sorted out my daughters insurance for a 1.1 citroen Saxo. She is 17,just passed her test went via compare the market cheapest is with Diamond insurance £990 3rd party f&T or £200 for fully comp,no excess, handbag cover!!!!!and courtesy car.
- By tatty-ead [gb] Date 02.06.10 14:01 UTC

> £990 3rd party f&T or £200 for fully comp,no excess,handbag cover!!!!!and courtesy car.

have you got those round the right way????????????
- By furriefriends Date 02.06.10 17:59 UTC
I tried diamond for my daughter but was more expensive than quinn by far and not such a good deal (given of course that was before them going into administration LOL)
Was  it another £200.00 for fully comp ? mind even that is good. As has been said earlier the problem with insuring the kids cars as yours and then putting them on as named drivers it isn't really legal and if the insurance company finds out that the kids are the main drivers and not you you could find the insurance is invalidated leaving no cover at all. Mind I can see how tempting it is considering the costs.
- By Alfieshmalfie Date 03.06.10 08:15 UTC
I think the official insurance term is 'fronting' and its illegal :(  People have been trying to get round high insurance cost for youngsters by taking out insurance in the parents name with the youngster as a named driver. So: Ford Fiesta, V5/ownership documents all in name of Fred aged 17 and mainly driven by him, however insurance is in name of parents, with Fred as named driver.  If Fred has accident, then its likely that the V5 documents will be asked for as well, if the car is then found to be legally owned by Fred, the insurance wont pay out.

Hope that makes sense.

Soz I meant an extra £200 on top of the £990 so the total price was under £1300 for Fully comp - missed the word extra out due to having a daughter dancing in the lounge as we just bought her her first car - and she wanted to sleep in it last night bless. Also wants to wash and polish it though its immaculate.Won't last me thinks!!!!
This is her own policy, not on mine which was actually more expensive,I was surprised to find a policy for £1300 but it took 3 days of searching and quoted up to £7000 - ridiculous.I am aware that it is frowned upon to have one of your kids put on your own policy and generally insurance companies wont pay out.But some companies allow restricted usage eg the time they drive the car, mileage etc.But at some point they will require their own insurance so best to start earlier rather than later.(bank of Mum and Dad I guess LOL)
This was done via compare the market.com and Admiral was only £5 more at £995,but as someone said girls are cheaper to insure, its only a 1.1 saxo, parked in a secure driveway/garage at night, quiet part of the country etc.
- By furriefriends Date 03.06.10 13:02 UTC
Wasnt meant as a go at you Cornishmal realised what you had done was "proper"  just noticed that others had mentioned this as a way round the problem and wanted to point out that it was a risky way of doing thinks as alfieshalfie said. Hope your daughter enjoys her car. Mine has hardly been out of hers since she got it in February but as you say the regular cleaning soon became rather boring. Infact she tries bribibing the boyfriend to do it or will take it to the local hand wash !!
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 03.06.10 13:25 UTC
Didn't think you were,in fact I was going to post something similar.
Just bought a run around for me as we have a huge dog van and a mitsubushi warrior both are fuel guzzlers and as I work 3 days a week and its a 65 mile round trip daily wanted something cheaper - insurance cost me £117 fully comp.....
- By furriefriends Date 03.06.10 14:21 UTC
goodness, think I need one of those my insurance on my Jazz after being over 50 full ncb etc etc is still 350 pa ! and oh on the estate car is twice that
Car insurance is absoulte madness , in fact I am beginning to think my fil may have been right he gave up driving years befor he needed to walked down the road for shopping.  Believed in frequenting your local shops and got a black cab when he wanted to go any where else he reckoned it saved him pounds !
- By cornishmals [gb] Date 03.06.10 17:53 UTC
aHHH but the mitsubushi warrior and the dog van are about £360 each,so not all cheap!
