not sure if i asked this before, but relevant ...i am for harnesses myself. have a puppy of nearly 4 months old soon ! not a puller on lead type i add...but ? i felt a little neck might get jolts on collar so at vet locally who like them more than collars i got one...is messy i add fitting it takes time...and as my pup is not wearing a collar or harness in house or in fields when out, it is a nuissance putting it on...i add..the small size one she first had ? rolled a bit around ...the 2nd one a month later medium with a larger body she has fits snuggly ...amazing how FAST pups grow ! LOL ! well they cost about 20 gbp a time so not cheap to have to have say 3 by adulthood of a medium sized dog mine will be...

but...did i read here something about front legs possible irritation ? i must say...the one i have fitted her ...and i will put a picture of it up soon here...seems to not irritate front legs at all...

it gives more control to owner i add...seems to put resistance on front body generally rather than the neck of the dog...so ? i like it...of course aesthetically not nice on a long haired fluffy dog...but hey...not that bad...nice colour to suit dog makes it ok i say to that.

they are very common on small dogs like terriers in france i see sometimes i add. mine is not a terrier, but i like idea that if suddenly she jolted...the jarr would be to body not to her neck...

ooh...forget those SPIKED TRAINING collars ! if anyone uses those ? i think you should get a bull not a dog to go walkies with !

those things that dig into the neck of a dog...i saw some on the internet when thinking of getting a collar weeks back...in many places...and choker collars...not so bothered about chocker collars...hey if it were my grandma's boxer dog ? give me strength...that NEEDED to be half suffocated to slow down !! lol ! not that she had one herself...was unmanageable...never went walkies on lead...always free...would have knocked or pulled her over if it had worn a collar and lead !!! LOL !!! ooh schh...it was in the countryside...no need for those things there.

oh and pls don't start up about dogs on leads about livestock worries chasing in countryside...sigh...my grandma had chickens all sorts...sigh...if the boxer had chased and ate them there would have been hell to pay...it didn't....dogs are NOT STUPID ! they soon work it out ! do NOT chase OUR FOOD ! and DO not run off far with us yelling and having to come and get you...or else ? more yelling to be heard and no more walkies for a long time ! very clever dog it was...far too boisterous...everyone worried it would knock grandparents over...IT DID NOT !

I have a stupid dog *LOL* and he is walked on a check chain. He genuinely loves other animals (we have cats, lizards, rats etc at home) but he doesn't understand that cuddles should NOT be initiated by tearing at 50mph towards someone... He has been taught to put breaks on but I feel I need the check chain for confidence. That said, am confused why anyone would need a normal collar with spikes on the inside? I understand (sort of) the prong chain as a training device...?? Confused.com

Look at "Help with harnesses - which one post.

No need waste your time reading any further, just buy one of these :-

I have had big dogs for many years now, GS`s actually. They can really pull on the lead when excited by a cat, some interesting distraction or other dogs. I have been pulled over a few times and so has my wife. Elbows and knees damaged.

We have had Halti`s, Gentle Leaders and a Canny collar, but none of them worked very well.  A partial success, but not satisfactory.

Our current Rottie has a really hard pull, they are powerful dogs. We discovered the Kumfi  Dogalter collar browsing the net, bought a Large size at £10 inc. postage, it came within a day and the personal service was friendly and efficient.

This Kumfi Dogalter is marvelous and I have had no problem at all since we got it. It is a superb design, very strong with an attaching loop for the lead so that it is fail-safe and fits to perfection. There is no problem in riding up round the eyes like many other collars do. I cannot see how any restrainer can possibly beat it in sheer functional design.

I am amazed at the control this collar has given me, with absolutely no or very little pull-back from a large dog with the muscle power of an Ox. The guy who designed this Kumfi Dogalter is a Genius.

Hi i have a halti harness for my dog.. the way that i thought about it when i bought a harness over a collar, is that when i go to get my horse in from the field (i am going somewhere don't worry) and i put a head collar on it. it's more comfortable for the horse and i have more control over him.  If i were to put a collar on him, it wouldn't make the slightest bit of difference what i did to him.  So i thought that i would try it on my dog by getting something similar to a head collar, for my dog.
And it works. 100% better, yes, he still pulls, but he doesnt sound like hes choking him self. and if he pulls i have a lot more control over him. It's made from a strong, nice material rather than something that looks good, but doesnt work or feel comfortable on the dog.

This is the one that i've got and it works.
Hope this is of some help

Started cocker with harness now super sexy gold embroidered green collar for best, and gold embroidered mauve for spare. Who says I spoil him!!!
Jake has a leather collar with Jake in purple all over it. We both use a long training lead for walkies as it gives us either a short or long lead when needed and fits around your neck when walking (our neck not there's) but harness for small pup worked ok but Jake BC always had a collar.

now i quite like the haiti style collar harness i must say..and reading about it...wondered...thinking ahead about places bringing in MUZZLE laws...it says it has an on/off mechanism...which means muzzle ? i wonder if this would qualify for a muzzle in places like Poland and Lithuania where allegedly they are law in towns ? don't want the HORRIBLE hard cage type traditional ones i add...will DO WITHOUT if it comes to that...and RUN !!! LOL !! ooh i am a terror ja...never seen a dog with one on there i must say...see LOADS in petshops though !!! says a great deal about LAW ADHERENCE to MUZZLES that i think !!! LOL !!! common sense needed...

this is the one i got her medium sized at the vet yesterday...label says FULLY adjustable pet harness...ah yes in ENGLISH...made in ? USA !!! LOL !!!

now i like idea of several collars for different things...

http://www.rhinestonedogcollars.net/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/.pond/blackvelvetheartnew.jpg.w560h470.jpg

just look at that ...black velvet...and crystals on it ! what a spectacular look on a black dog hey ? !!! LOL !! SWAROVSKI of course !!! LOL ! ooh i don't have any of that i add...but for pup ? oooh...well i wear AMBER...yellow mellow honey colour stuff...now...that would look nice if they did dog collars in it !!! LOL !!!

sigh...now...the ROUNDED LEATHER LEAD....is like GOLD DUST to get hold of apparently...VERY expensive...but SO flexible in the hands and light...sigh...saw breeder with one the other day at classes....ooh i said...where did you get that ? SAME as the asnwer to the ONLY TITBITS my pup went WILD for !!! AT DOG SHOWS !!!

eff that...why is that so SELECT ??? why not available to people other than at dog shows ? and I WANT ONE FOR THE SHOWS TOO !

phew ee...this natural diet is making pup POOT...just got a WAFT up from down below...i will become a SCENTER soon at this rate !!! LOL !

now a cocker is sort of black..but brown in it too...so ? green goes well with that...i think anyhows...mauve...no...can't say i think mauve is good...don't like mauve generally i add...should be either blue or royal blue or sky blue...i find mauve a nuissance colour...

i am going to email Viviane about these things...that chich patt dog...might do them for small dogs ...

ooh..a question...THE NAME TAG thing...sigh...have 2 round metal discs...one i could ENGRAVE things on..sigh...she is CHIPPED..and saw a kennel club email to me yesterday on about some central records thing for lost dogs...well if that is just GB chipped dogs no use to me...not putting SEVERAL chips in her...and i don't LIKE the round metal tags...sigh...they RATTLE on FOOD DISHES for starters !

ah...the question is...is it LAW to have name tag on in GB ? i should look it up myself...chipped is not law...ooh i am SOO woosy meaning unclear on LAWS...generally about dogs...the ones i think there should be about CAR harnesses don't exist !!! LOL !!! all sorts of OTHER daft ones do !!!
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 02.06.10 13:11 UTC
It is the law for a dog to wear a tag with the owners surname and address on it. (house number and postcode is acceptable.) phone numbers are actually optional but i would always reccommend it.
- By black fairy [fr] Date 02.06.10 13:47 UTC Edited 02.06.10 13:52 UTC
ach so ! thx for reminding me...i do recall reading that now...why i had in mind this engraving need !!! LOL !! could not recall WHY i thought i had to engrave something on a disc...but NOW I DO !!! ooh i am AWEFUL sometimes at recalling associations of WHY and ACTION needed ! i have a TO DO List in my head...and can't figure out the WHY sometimes !!! often in fact !!! LOL !! sigh. well. now i recall...why this kennel club thing interested me...as tel number seems VERY SENSIBLE ...but...what if my mobile is dead ? they might not phone later...if anything happened...people try things once and give up as a norm for things like that...too much bother...so... a central 24 hour 365 days per year service number is a good idea...sigh...now that leaves me with no doubt a HUGE PROBLEM in FRANCE where a standard 7 days week is in reality a 4 day week if you take out sat sun and mons...and 2 hour lunchbreaks in the other days...sigh...i must MAKE THIS a MUST GET IT RIGHT matter...before ENGRAVING numbers on this tag...i think tag is better than the round roll paper inside thing i saw also at vet...that could get WET in water and unreadable.

i am sad today just now...the gardien of flats just told me ALL the kittens and mother have been collected by the SPA refuge...i was surprised...thought the cat belonged to someone here...was being FED when kittens were in hedge...lots used to play with them there...my pup got hissed once by the female mother and did nto go near them again !!! LOL !!! she made one of her rare SCREAMS in fact just hearing the cat hiss ! did not go near her !!! LOL !! there were several of us there to see that event !!! she scuttled to me dead fast tail between legs ! i could not help laughing...but that is why she is terrified of little bunny rabbits of mine...they must look like KITTENS !!! LOL !!! and the big mother rabbits like a big cat !!! LOL !!! i have a pup afraid of bunnies !!!

pup is fine with 5 weeks old kitts...but to have one myself gives me a prob...they do not travel well cats...unlike dogs...and i cant leave it here...gardien had said i could have one...was saving me the grey striped tabby he said before...changed his mind...we spoke of it...he is right...not good..i have the neighbours kitten for play but my own is not an option.

i must leave this forum a while...just remembered...another TO DO thing...my RABBITS !!! i need to go on pets forum to find out what vaccins are in...sigh...we well alain lost 15 small ones recently...vet said didn't know why...4 of mine...schxxss...there is a new disease...one that kills in hours...haemorage...flies carry it to the rabbits...bet GB have no idea on that forum...didn't know the word for BABY RABBITS the other day !!! LOL !! KITTENS !! baby rabbits are called KITTENS too ! so now you doggies know too !! must tell the rabbit lot now ! and get to chemist...that farmer is like many here...ANTI VACCINS...sigh...they make rabbits infertile they say in the countryside...careful nana..country is a land...countryside is what i meant...corrected...and non one wants vets on site carrying diseases...another issue here...sigh...

you may want to look for something like this

as they don't hang down to clank on dishes or get caught on things.

brilliant. exactly much better...excuse me you...but you do leads ? slim ones ? show ones...the sort of round flexible ones ? now this tag thing is PERFECT...what i must do is ask the local VET about the NUMBER of some "international" organisation to register and have a no of...no eff use to me if JUST IN FRANCE covered ! i MOVE ! and it is WHEN NOT IN FRANCE that sommit could happen ! here...i am stuck to mu pup at the hip...yes...she is in pain again...will hve to cut out ALL walks for a few days...she was fine for quite a while...then it played up...no noise...but in pain...so...no more walks at all for a few days...sigh...carried in her the last few hundred meters...9.5 kilos and 6 litres of milk in bag...in heat...never mind...she did not want to walk...she will always walk if ok...muscle sprain played up again...sigh...

Viral Haemorrhagic Disease (VHD)?

VHD is a well known rabbit disease over here and we have a vaccine for it which doesn't to my knowledge make rabbits infertile. The disease has been here since the early 1990's, believed to have got here via infected rabbit meat from China. Not all breeders vaccinate against it though and thankfully outbreaks are not as common as they once were. Myxomatosis is a much more serious threat, and can even affect rabbits that have been vaccinated.
- By black fairy [fr] Date 02.06.10 17:48 UTC Edited 02.06.10 17:58 UTC
well it is RAMPANT here in France...why ? we import 50 percent and more of our rabbit meat eaten in france from ? CHINA !!! lol ! what goes round comes around hey...and i just read that article said no vaccine...well they have one in France ! called vet...strewth...to use aussi expresison...she said at first BRING THEM IN !!! LOL !!! all 40 of them ?? from the DORDOGNE ??? r u quite SANE ??? i said !!! ah...so they can GIVE me stuff to take to Alain and he will vaccinate them...he will NOT allow a vet on site...contagious he says they are...lol...told my vet that too...well he saved my male fauve from death by bursting and removing all puss from a huge infection that could have killed him some months back...so ? he can vaccinate he said...so can i...and vet said we can do BABIES TOO ??? well alain says non to that...only adults...we have to take the risk with the little ones...but hey...i am FED UP with him losing all these rabbits...it could be MINE next !!! so ? he plays ball...and ? his darned DONKEY that has been LOOSE and bugging that Belgian labrador breeder enough to kick off about law cases against him...i can catch it...i am not called the Black Panther of the Night for nothing...i move like a CAT ! and so did my pup the other day as i was teaching her to stalk in woods...sigh...not that she is up to even having a walk anymore...she got in pain again just now after a walk to farm rested there some ball play close by...seemed fine...then walked acrross the fields back and she had a lie down and was in pain...no noise...but i saw her...and i picked her up and carried her as she wanted me to...was staring hard at me crouched down...sigh...dratted anti inflamatories given again to day did not take all pain away...speaking to vet again about her too tomorrow...she must now just NOT WALK anywhere for a week i think..i will carry her around to interest her.

2 months..that donkey has BRAYED at 3am outside a 20 labrador breeders !!! LOL !!! HE was in trouble with neighbours downwind of him about his dogs barking at mealtimes...now HE cant sleep due to HIS DOGS barking in response to DONKEY BRAYS at 3am !!! hilarious !!

ooh they are FED UP with eveyrone talking LAW CASES over there...these threats have been going on for over a year !!! so ? French legal system is JAMMED PACKED full of people complaining about COCKRELS CROWING...roots of ACACIA trees spreading into their plots...all sorts of TRIVIA like that ! so donkeys on the loose for 2 months braying annoying an already annoying breeer of labradors ? ooh that won't make it to the top of priorities hey !!! i don't like him anyway...he said my PUP could INFECT HIS DOGS passing by sniffing them !!! ooh i told her...you go say hello to noisy labs honey...and she did...BARK BARK BARK they went...then shut up. useless gaurd dogs i say to that ! nice dogs though.

chocolates. the belgian is a chocolate lab specialist. the ones we saw in field were goldens though. young ones. why are they not around his place ? dunno...they have a HUGE paddock...kennels...horses too...darned donkey probably is into horses hanging around there...can't see the labs interesting him...
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 02.06.10 17:52 UTC Edited 02.06.10 17:55 UTC

>and i just read that article said no vaccine

You didn't read that quite correctly - it says "Can VHD be treated?
While vaccines for preventing the disease have been developed in Europe, the vaccines are not available in the United States.
"

There is a vaccine here - we use it regularly at work.

ah...well that just goes to show jg...USA is backward in some things that matter ! like RABBITS !! fancy that...well they don't have many fancy rabbit breeders in the usa...dunno why...lovely animals...obviously not hot on medicines for them...maybe they get wiped out in the USA hey. cheers. good to know. rabbits...are very inportant...in the wild they get wiped out easily of course...fragile things...so all this INBREEDING i am against for ANY animals is just ADDIng in my view to the PROBLEMS in them...sigh...who knows...how all these new strains of viruses kick off...sigh...most countryside people do NOT VACCINATE here i add...ooh there are dratted LAWS about registering if you have more than say 45 rabbits...so no one talks rabbits...alain would be annoyed if he knew i was on about them here...strewth..when i spoke to local mayoress about planning permission on my land and just MENTIONED i was bringing my RABBITS over too...she IMMEDIATELY IGNORED my HOUSE issue and started up about going down to the DDE or whtaever burocrat place for rabbits and agriculture they have in town about the RABBITS ! i said look here madame...i have 6 of them expecting 30 ...well that was optimistic...they did nto PRODUCE for over 5 months !!! LOL !!! but i said i am NOT going to talk in town to anyone about my rabbits. this is MY LAND i do what i want. she kicked off saying she was the mayoress and had a say...i said lookie here...i WILL NOT CUT MY GRASS if you don't lay off me ! i WANT RABBITS ! and WHAT ARE YOU DOING ABOUT THE LAWNMOWING ON SUNDAYS that is ILLEGAL next door to me ??? hey ??? well we are NOT ON SPEAKING terms now of course. about rabbits or anything. LOL !! she is HATED by the Belgian i add...the only thing we had in common !!!

well of course HE has a BARKING LABRADORS problem. not my problem !!! LOL !! ooh i love saying that...it is not very nice...and my land does not hear ANY barking the wind and valley goes another way....ooh...but the PARISIENS are well piddled off with him !!! and the dogs !!! LOL !!! well 2 of that parisien womans terriers outta control dogs are now in trouble for jumping on a 97 year old lady and scratching her...sigh...i never could STAND those dogs...they CHARGE at you in excitement...paws out all 4 off the ground...amazed she did not get concussion.

nothing will happen to them. that is the beauty of FRance i add...your dogs can be outta control and knock and scratch old ladies like that and the whole set of burocrats can't FIND the PAPERS they need to know what they might do about it !!! LOL !! not funny if you WANTED to do anything about it of course.
- By MsTemeraire Date 02.06.10 18:09 UTC Edited 02.06.10 18:12 UTC

> ah...well that just goes to show jg...USA is backward in some things that matter ! like RABBITS !! fancy that...well they don't have many fancy rabbit breeders in the usa...

I suppose 24,000 in a country that size isn't 'many'.... but that doesn't include many thousands who breed for 4H (a youth organisation) but don't show at ARBA shows. Every County Fair has a 4H rabbit section.
http://www.arba.net/
I don't think they have the VHD virus over there, hence no need for the vaccine. Oops sorry yes they do but don't think it's as widespread as in Europe.
- By black fairy [fr] Date 02.06.10 18:13 UTC Edited 02.06.10 18:26 UTC
ooh yes...i am a member of ARBA ...lost the PAPERS !!! being FRENCH !!! LOL ! ooh...but seriously. we have nearly 1 MILLION in FRANCE..500k conservatitve admissions...yes the STATS are NOT worth the PAPER they might be WRITTEN on in France for that...why ? because of the 45 rabbits rule ! who in their RIGHT MIND is going to own up to having ANY rabbits with that rule hey ? inspections ??? !!! NON NON NON !

tehre is ANOTHER TO DO thing ! find the ARBA stuff...i read it...was rather daft...some things said how to find out if females are pregnant...sigh...well you can't learn things like that from books..i just took my gran round...sigh...alain does not know how to do it either...we were sat over the ARBA book and diagrams one evening til the early hours...me translating into French...he did not go to sleep...was very interested...had never SEEN a book on rabbits before ! ooh i LOVE books...the FARMER LOVED one of my DOG HERDING books just now...was leafing thru..her BEAUCERON is in it...had to drag it off her !

I DO NOT HAVE MORE THAN 45 RABBITS !!! HONEST !!! LOL !!! of COURSE i do not ! would i fib ??? ooh non ! and we are GOING TO LOSE MORE THAN THE 15 alain just lost in addition to my MALE PAPILLON he said was IMPORTENT ..no IMPOTENT and he put HIS male in to my female...well she PRODUCED EXCELLENT results i add.

lol...now WOULD i go and  do ANYTHING ILLEGAL like KEEP MORE THAN 45 rabbits ? of COURSE not ! LOL !!

IF I DONT GET SOME VACCINS !! FAST !!! THIS WEEK ! the FLIES ARE OUT TODAY ! and it is NOT THUNDERSTORM weather ! i need vaccins....oh...i hate NEEDLES...i hope it is FOOD or WATER i can give them. sigh.

AAAARHHH !!! i just noticed !!! jg !!! is a VET THING !!! OOH i really missed that point...whoops ! oh well..just take what i say with pinch of salt is it ? LOL !!!
