Topic Dog Boards / Health / Meg has just wet herself while sleeping!
- By ceejay Date 25.05.10 14:24 UTC
My 5 year old collie has been for a walk this morning - longer than usual in and out of the river.  I then left her sitting in the back of the car in the shade with the windows open while I cut the grass at my old house.  It has been warm here but not as warm as yesterday and there is a good breeze blowing with hazy cloud cover.  I came back home and she rested for about an hour at home.  I then went for a half hour agility lesson.  She was quieter than normal in the car - I had the air condition on.  I let her drink when she wanted and rest in between runs and came straight home.  She flaked out on the kitchen stone floor - to be expected after working.  However I just came into the kitchen to find that she was lying in her own wee.  She is quiet but quite alert now.  She has just followed me upstairs.  Have I just exhausted her so she slept too deeply?  I am not taking her over to the vet's unless I really have to because she will get really stressed - I am leaving her quiet for a few hours and keep an eye on her.
We have only just gone back to training after quite a long break - some months now.  She was very tired last week too - but then it was sunny then and I took it really easy. Any thoughts and advice please.

Some bitches wet if they are about to come into season, but its usually a rare accident.
- By ceejay Date 25.05.10 15:10 UTC
She has been spayed.

Incontinence in a spayed bitch is not unheard of particularly around the time a bitch would have been in season had she remained intact.

Our bitch had spayed incontinence

Just been over to the vets for a chat.  They said to keep an eye on her and how much she is drinking and weeing.  If there is any signs of doing it again then to take a sample over.  Also she mentioned checking her heart.  I will see how she is tomorrow but I think I will be cancelling training on hot days even though there is a breeze and the sun is behind clouds.

She has eaten her food normally, woofed as normal, been out for a little walk this evening - and seems fine.
- By welshie [gb] Date 25.05.10 20:54 UTC
did you take a wee sample to the vets to get tested?
- By tooolz Date 25.05.10 21:23 UTC
I think a couple of things could possibly have happened here.
Spay Incontinence is probably in the very early stages and you haven't noticed it yet...so the heat and the extra exercise caused a deeper than usual sleep and her weak bladder became evident.
My old bitch with SI started exactly the same way... a big puddle in a very deep sleep, now she dribbles and makes small leaks on her bed throught the night. She has been on Propalin and now estrogen suppliments which have helped greatly.

Could just be a one off she may have just weed in a dream in her sleep?
As long as you keep and eye on her im sure it was one off.

If she was human she's be really embarrassed!!

But its a worry and you'll be watching her for weeks.
When Jake gets home on a hot day we usually play withe the hose and I damp him down, Whistler loves the sun but Jake suffers with his big coat.

My bitch sometimes does this when she goes into a really deep sleep when tired. It could also be a sign of a urinary infection. It may be that because it was hot she drank a lot and then fell into a deep sleep.

At 5 years old (just) isn't she a bit young to start developing incontinence?  She had drunk extra - she always drinks when she does training - but I had taken her for a walk earlier by the river - what was her usual walk before we moved a couple of months back.  She is fine this morning but was still sleeping quite deeply in her basket while I had breakfast.  The vet mentioned checking her heart - that worried me seeing that I think she may have had lungworm over a year ago.  Last week when I took her to training it was hot and after a short workout she actually lay down to drink out of her bowl.  I was a bit shocked that she was so tired so quickly.  I would have called it off this week but it was cooler and not so sunny.

I haven't taken a sample yet - there is no sign that she has had any more accidents overnight.

Hi my boxer bitch had the same problem once she turned 6 our vet said it was down to having her spayed before she came into season , propalin worked up to a point but she still had the odd accident, I taught her to pee on comand so when she peed I tell her "toilet" and she would pee again so her bladder was completly empty, however the bad news is it never went away she lived till she was 13 but we always had to make sure she emptied her bladder before visiting any one! I always took a bit of vetbed with me for her to lie on incase of leakage! I hope you can get her sorted, oh the joys of dogs!!

Sadly not, incontinence due to being spayed can occur at a young age, my friends bitch has been on propalin since about the age of 3 or 4 and is now 7 years old.

I would be more careful with the weather and agility when there is no bright sunshine it can fool us into thinking its cooler than it actually is.

I have a bitch who suffers from EICS during the summer months I have to be very careful with her even for normal daily exercise .Se becomes very thirsty, wobbly we have to keep her cool and in the shade.

Hope it turns out to be nothing but an overactive bladder.

> incontinence due to being spayed can occur at a young age

So I have been reading - that is not good.  I have always thought that Meg had a super bladder - she has never seemed to rush to go to the toilet in the mornings.  And even when we go out for a walk she may wait to choose her place to go.  However she does mark quite a lot too - and it is marking because I can often see where another dog has been - she sniffs then marks.

> EICS

Sorry? what does that stand for?

Starryeyes - have just seen you have posted on this before.

She may simply have a touch of a uti. I'd keep an eye and it may just have been a once off. I'd be more concerned at her tiring easily. She is a young girl at 5. A quick heart check would put your mind to rest. I nearly lost my parents terrier to sun stroke when he was 3 and it was a cloudy day. Luckily I had a 3 litre bottle of water in a backpack for the dogs which nearly killed me to carry! I poured it on him to cool him down. He's 16 and a half now but it was a close call. And we were only about half an hour into the walk.

Have popped her over to the vet for a check over - her heart is fine.  She said to take a sample over -or as other folks have said - it is the beginning of spay incontinence.  Well I suppose out of everything that she could have - my fear was a fit! I suppose those two things are the lesser of the evils.

My 3yr old bitch came back from agility training followed by a walk with the other dogs in the winter and led on the kitchen floor, awake but peeing without knowing! After a urine sample showed nothing, I decided to see if it happened again, exactly a month later, again after lots of exercise.  She is now on Incurin and she has had no accidents since.  She was spayed 12 weeks after her 2nd season, not what I would say 'too young' but I cant help blaming it on that.  Who knows? She had terrible heavy seasons (the bleed lasted over a month each time and the loss of blood was shocking) When she was spayed the vet said she had a normal uterus etc. Anyway, going off the point here, sorry.  Its seems strange to be related to exercise as last year she did 3 Marathons with me and nothing happened, so why its started now, I dont know.  The meds have worked for her now and we are getting her on a much reduced dose which is great.

Have to ask.  I've been curious for ages!  Is that Meg in your avatar?  If so, she is the spit of my BC boy!  :-)
- By ceejay Date 28.05.10 22:23 UTC
Yes that is Meg.  There are a few pictures on the fundog show if you still have the link to that.  She is such a deep colour compared to most red and whites - in fact I was looking at her in the sun today and I could see quite a number of black hairs across her shoulders.  She had black and white siblings as well as a red merle.

This happened with someones SWD recently but more often and she's only two.  SOme wondered if it was due to early spaying.  I myself wondered if it was due to injury to the back she was also drinking a lot.  She is also another active dog doing agility and gundog work.  After a month of tests (nothing found), rest etc. she hasn't done it since so I'm even more certain that it was due to her doing something whilst exercising.
- By ceejay Date 29.05.10 11:49 UTC
The vet told me to keep an eye on how much she was drinking.  It is difficult because she is a dog that takes a sip from this puddle, that stream, pots around the garden etc - anywhere except her proper water bowl unless she is shut in the house.  I have been thinking about excercise - she had had a walk that morning and I had taken the ball to throw.  She hadn't done that in a while because our walk now isn't ball friendly - narrow path and lots of undergrowth.  She also runs around our back garden like a fool.  She did hurt herself the other day on the steps - think she banged her leg because she stood holding it for a few minutes.  As I said earlier the garden is big and on different levels with steps in between.  I can only observe and take care.  Shutting off areas is not feasible at the moment but certainly something that I keep in mind - not just for animals but grandchildren too.

How is Meg? did it happen again or a one off?

There worse than kids!!
- By ceejay Date 01.06.10 15:08 UTC
No problem this morning.  It is cloudy here this morning having been raining.  She was her usual self in the car - barking at the other cars as we came closer to where we train - she always knows when we are nearly there!   She was soon tired but then agility is heavy work for dogs especially when they go at it like Meg does.  My trainer suggests that maybe her fitness is not so good - it has been October since we did any training - she has never had such a long gap before.  Will be starting training one evening a week soon.
- By ceejay Date 05.06.10 15:58 UTC
Think you are right tooolz.  She has been fine from what I have seen but this morning I took her to a competition.  We had 2 runs that were first in the ring - the last run would have been 3rd.  That meant waiting until at least 3 pm - did it last year and it was so hot waiting around all day.  This year she cooled off in the river and I came home - was back home by eleven.  This afternoon I was lying on the floor with her and she rolled over as usual to have her tummy stroked and I noticed a drop of urine on her coat.  It certainly seems as if she is dripping. Haven't taken a sample in yet - didn't have anything to catch it in before, but I am all prepared with a clean plastic container now.

Certainly not the end of the world when they start as it can be well controlled. A combo of Propalin and the oestrogen seems to keep my 10 year old dry. I've managed by trial and error to get the balance of the two drugs just right without breaking the bank :-)

Over twenty years I've had three Dobes.
All bitches
All spayed
All on Propalin!
The first was spayed before season, the other two after seasons,
one was 2 the other 4.
Am I unlucky as the vet suggested (they did the ops) or is it
another Dobe thing?Propalin does the trick but we do have the odd mishap.
Funnily enough after hectic walks!
- By ceejay Date 07.06.10 18:25 UTC
Ahh! exercise again.  Took Meg to Wye valley agility on sat - we had done (and messed up our first two runs) by 10.  Our next run would not have been until about 3 - it was already quite hot and muggy so came home by 11.  Thought it best.  However my Mum was taken ill - my sister was not quite so careful with the hot weather and had taken her shopping.  Suspected another mini stroke so had to drop everything and dash up to Shropshire.  Bang went my careful planning for Sunday.  Anyway doctor seemed to think Mum had an urinary infection - things go around don't they!  So hectic weekend, loads of driving - so dog not sorted yet.  Keep going around sniffing where she has been sleeping!
