Hi Guys

Looking for some help had a succsessful first mating 14 days ago with a tie lasting 30 minutes and a second mating 12 days ago with a slip mating. I was wanting to know if there would be any noticable signs that i could look for to know if she is pregnant as i am going out of mind knowing i need to wait another 2 weeks before vet will do ultrasound to confirm pregnancy.

Thanks Darren

Hi Darren,

It would be unusual to have any real signs at this stage, there are no hard and fast rules.  The first signs we tend to notice are that the bitches teats become more pronounced and a slightly different shape and from a behaviour point of view the bitch is much more clingy.  However, these changes also occur during a phantom.  Some vets can carry out a blood test from between 21 and 25 days to confirm pregnancy.

If you can stand the waiting I'd hold on for the scan.

Some maiden bitches still don't actually look pregnant at 7 weeks!  It usually takes someone with experience to notice outward signs, but certainly not as early as you want to see them!  :-)  Impatience!  :-)

If you are really accustomed to what is normal for your bitch, and have studied her nipples (yes, I know!)  Around day 21, although they haven't changed in size, you will notice a different hue to them.  Not much help I suppose if you've never scrutinised the colour previously.  But it's what I take as my first indication.

Most bitches - if you stand over them - you will notice a very slight widening of the ribcage, but again, nowhere near as early as you were hoping for.  I've had bitches that really didn't look pregnant, and pups didn't move down until the day before whelping.

My friend reckons Ellie is pregnant because of her nipples, though she doesn't know what they usually look like! Vet palpated her and said 'probably, but only 1 or 2' - grr! I wanted at least a definite yes even if numbers were low or impossible to tell. My husband reckons she is pregnant because she's taken to snoozing upstairs and doesn't bother to wake up at lunchtime. Sorry for hijack, the anticipation is killing me! :-D

Hi Darren...I do sympathise with how you're feeling, having just gone through 7 weeks, 2 scans & 'is she, isn't she' We've even been told at 6 week scan that there's no pups, but I'm still not convinced :( Only thing you can do is wait till your scan & hope for good news. Saying that....I had a girl throw up bile every day for a week in the early stages. (Different girly to this time) Good luck L.G.

first indication for me is that the bitches vulva doesnt quite return to pre-season size, its never been wrong for me yet.
teats and temperament are the next two noticable changes my own girls.

The waiting is horrible, good luck :)

same as mandy too her bits stay swollen her temperment changes then teats start to go pink. :)

i remember the waiting game those 4 weeks seem to drag!!! good luck
- By myboo [gb] Date 18.05.10 20:52 UTC
lol.. impatent !! then again i was the same, it really did drag for me too, i was only really conviced she was pregnant when she was scanned then it really sunk it, but i surpose the signs were there before, bleeding lessoned after she was mated, about two weeks later she had a  clear discharge i was told this was normal, but i dont think this happens with all bitches
then the swolen teats then obvious weight gain,
but as there all diffrent i guess you'll just have to wait :) x

I'm as confused as you, so do sympathize.  Thought second time would be simplar and would recognise, no such luck.  i've been oulling my hair out for weeks.  She was sick a lot last week and very off her food for a while, unless she fancied it.  So different from last time and that was false.  but last time was more with symptoms, stupid I know, this time encouraged to scan early, nothing seen so written off.  Scanned again and nothing seen.  Second scanner did not rule it out she said could be late.

Currently wrote any pregancy off, my girl still so confusing with what she is doing.  Her appitite has increased a little today but still acting preggers.  i did the blood tests so no idea what went wrong.

Hope you are put out of your misery soon and have success.

Ditto Sunshine! I don't know what to expect from my girl as it's her 1st litter, but I really wish the next 2 weeks would fly bye as this phantom thing is really getting me down now :( xxx

hi my dog had a phantom last season fooled us all including the vet . shes preg now and her first scan showed nothing we had to take her bk last week which showed she was preg , Think her first scan had been to early as she was only 24 days from her first mating but our vet scans from 21 days .we were gutted when she missed last season .
- By kevinsdog [gb] Date 19.05.10 09:30 UTC
Can i just say that when she had her phantom we treated her as if she was in pup right up till her due date would of been .
- By LittleGreen [gb] Date 19.05.10 09:33 UTC
Good luck Kevinsdog...when are pups due?
- By Goldmali Date 19.05.10 09:39 UTC
I often notice a change in behaviour in the bitch from 2 weeks onwards, and some start with morning sickness as early as 2 weeks, others wait until 4 weeks for it.
- By kevinsdog [gb] Date 19.05.10 09:43 UTC
Thanks littlegreen shes due the 16th of june but had her last litter early all 11 of them . vet said could only see 2 this time but time will tell only had her scanned for confirmation of pregancy not numbers ,

yeah very impatient but have to wait til week 4 or 5 as vet said not worth wasting money scanning any earlier as might not find anything then would have to pay for another scan few weeks later. Her vulva is still bigger than it was before coming into season and her nipples are getting bigger more so the ones closest to tail. She is a bit clingy but she has always been like that also no sickness yet either but i suppose every bitch is different.  If she is pregnant gaining weight will it be more noticable in the stomach area cos i was told the rib cage gets wider before the stomach would well thats what my vet says.

If she is pregnant she is due on 5th july so only 46 days to go.

my vet  didnt charge for a second scan so we were lucky we didnt have to pay twice , my bitch goes very clingy straight away .

if your vet is good at scaning then the scan is fine at day 30 if not 35 is better.
