Hi
My 8 year old Border Collie has just been diagnosed with IBD. I have not yet discussed it with our vet as he phoned me with the results just before going on holiday so I have an appointment to see him on Thursday. As far as I can see after googling it the condition can be controlled by diet. Rex was previously on Hills Science Plan but the vet has told me to put him on Hills Prescription Diet ID which he is eating ok but after looking at the nutritional info I'm not sure about it (but then I'm not the one eating it!)

Has anyone had any experiance with IBD in dogs?
What should I feed him on?
I've only ever used dried dog foods so would like to continue with this rather then raw feeding but want to feed him the best but which is still ok for his IBD.

Would Orijen or Acana be suitable for IBD.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.  

Hi,our Boxer puppy kept throwing up bile but only in the early hours of the morning so she was put on Zantac and antibiotics this still didnt settle her, still the same occurance happening before all of this happening she was in good health that was until my other half decided to change her diet to Orijen from Arden Grange,in the meantime she decides to eat/chew 2 cds so took her to the vet again they decided to scan her to if anything was inside her as the cd bit were like shards of glass thankfully nothing showed up on the scan except slightly thickened intestines a sign they said he could have IBD or where she had been sick it had caused the swelling so they sent her home with Hill ID she had to stay on this for a month we had no more sickness with this, on a check up our vet said to gradually put her back on Arden Grange as she was doing well on this before the change of food this we done and she has gone on and has had no sickness so the vet has said that it was diet related and if she was ill again they would put a scope down her and gather some samples from her as this is the only clinical way to diagnose IBD so fingers crossed she wont have to have this done as at the moment she is ok.Orijen is a very good food but something in it didnt agree with Betty as regaurding the ID our vet said to use it for a month it is designed to be gentle on the dog stomach/intestines look at the ingredient list for it compared   with orijen so at the moment i would follow your vets advice it worked for us,we have also had a boxer with life time colitis and he was controlled with James Wellbeloved lamb and rice this is also a gentle food.Hope this makes some sense let me know how he gets on.Debby

My GSD has IBD and was diagnosed by a fantastic specialist called Rob Foale (you can google him ) after he kept her in hospital for 2 days for tests and put cameras down under full anaesthetic. She has a very high percentage of stomach scarring and I have to be very careful what I feed her. He recommended a food that she had not come into contact with before and therefore had not built up a resistance to, in this case turkey ( as most dog foods contain chicken or fish ) he suggested JWB turkey and rice or he advised that the tinned food original chappie was considered a good alternative as both of these are free from additives. The turkey and rice has worked for 8 years but she also needed medication. She did not get on well with prednisalone or other anti inflammatory drugs so she ended up on strong Metronidazole and also carprodyl. This works although it is a bit of a knife edge if she steals food from one of the other dogs she can get an upset quite quickly. She is very allergic to any type of fish and I stay well away from chicken, but I still think that we are very lucky to have got off quite lightly and with careful eating she has had and hopefully will continue to have a good life. I would not suggest that this food will work for your dog, I think you will need to take the advice of a specialist, but would suggest asking for a referral if your vet does not mention this.
