Last Thursday my neighbours dog jumped from their trampoline and over into our garden, my own dog got the fright of her life and flew through the house and out the front garden (lovely day so hubby waas cutting the grass hence why both doors were open), unfortunalty someone had left the gate open and she was away :(

We searched and put posters up all over, fb etc and thankfully last night got a call from a lady who had her after someone else had knocked on her door thinking she was one of hers as she has same breed, she took her in and said she would take her to vets to see if she was chipped , i dont think i have ever been so happy and relived :)

Now for my next worry, the lady who had found her said this morning one of hers had mounted my bitch and asked if she was in season but i did not know with her being missing for over a week, she had only ever had one season that i had seen in 3 years, she explained the way the heat season worked as i have never even considered it and i have now been home and been on the net for hours and i am so worried, i will take her to vets on Tuesday but i dont know what can be done  if anything :(

Has anyone got any advise for a very worried owner who is feeling very guilty and stupid at the moment!!

Thank you

Suz

If she was not in season when she went missing and she was not in season a week later I would say she was not in season at all. It is possible she has a season without any outward signs but even then you would have noticed the interest of dogs she met. Take her to the vet on Tuesday but do not worry yourself as I am sure the vet will be able to offer advice.

There is an injection for dogs (like the morning after pill) so there is no need to worry about an unwanted pregnancy.

However, you say that she was mounted.  Not that there was a tie.  I'm guessing an exciteable male smelling a new bitch!  I am sure that your vet will put your mind at ease.

Glad you got her back.  :-)

she had only ever had one season that i had seen in 3 years,

I just wanted to say, this isn't normal and the safest bet for your girl here would be to have her spayed.

Thanks for the replies everyone, Jean i actually found the injection info late last night so i am a bit more happier :)

As for the spaying i lost a beautiful healthy tri girl 5 years ago after he was starved of oxygen during the op, i will never trust a vet with an op again unless it is life saving, i have changed vets and my new vet knows my feeling and has never pushed for her to be spayed, it took us long enough to get over my last little girl, i know it is rare but its just one of those fears you cant shake off :(

What an awful story.  While I do like my girls spayed if they are not to be used for breeding, I have to say that I might feel differently if I'd had your experience.

It must be a nightmare to have lived through something so terrible.  {{{  HUGS  }}}

Well went to vets this afternoon, he checked her over and no signs of being hurt or anything, he would not give her the injection though as he said because she was missing over a week she could have been caught earlier on by another dog and the injection has side effects :(

On the plus side he does not think she was/is in season so should not have any fears, if i have any worries i can take her back in 31 days for a scan, which i probably will anyway as i am a bit of a wuss!!

What did annoy me was when i went into the surgery(just a drop in so they did not know i was coming) i was going to say you can take down the poster, guess what was not put up!!!!

How awful for you. Trouble is if she hasn't had a season for 3 years she may be at risk from pyometra, and unfortunately to spay when they are unwell is likely to carry more risks than a normal spay. I know the thought it terrifying but it is extremely rare to lose a dog under ga for a routine op, but more common to lose them if suffering from pyometra. :-(

The vet is right it can have bad side effect which can go on for 6-7 months.
The best thing to do is have her scaned, a good vet has a machine which will be able to pick up the embrios.
If there are any then you can decide what to do.
