We passed our GCDS bronze award at Bath today.  I was looking at the schedules for some of the shows coming up and thought I might enter him in the GC breed classes.

HOWEVER, I noticed that the certificate we had today has his "home" name rather than his registered name, does that matter when it comes to entering the shows if the certificate was required?

I am not aware of any shows other than Crufts that has GC breed classes? But yes, you are supposed to get the examiner to put the registered name on the certificate.

I've only seen them at Crufts too.

I can't see how having the pet name on the certificate would be an issue? Who is to confirm which dog ever took the award? Only you really. Either way why not take it as an incentive to get your silver?

They changed the forms you fill in when you take a test to allow spaces for both reg'd name and pet name, and when I first queried it with the KC back when the GC classes were introduced at Crufts, they did say you should ask for the registered name to be put. It's the only way of having proof. (No different to proving the right dog qualified for Crufts I guess.)

They have them at National Gundog and City of Birmingham, just happen to be two schedules I'd picked up so looks like more shows have them.

I'll contact the KC next week to see if there's any way a certificate can be re-issued.  The certificate is only hand written but don't think I can change it.  Since they did the test at a Champ show, I'm suprised they didn't say to daughter they needed his registered name!

Thanks -that's good to hear, I wish more did! :)

I've seen them somewhere I think. And open shows sometimes have AV Good Citizen Scheme classes. Mine all have the pet names on, I suppose you might connect Henry with his show name, but otherwise I would be in trouble if anyone asked. Luckily nobody has ever asked me for proof that the dog is eligible, but perhaps next time I will ask for the show name just in case.

Just to update..

The Kennel club rang this morning to advise that if we wrote the full kennel name on his certificate, they would alter their records too.

They also reminded us that we should always have the certificate with us as proof if entering a GC class at shows.

Thanks for that, I've been entering the GC class at Crufts the last 2 years & never even thought about the actual name on our certificate, I always bring it with me but what use is it with just "Razzle" in the name and it's no link what so ever to his KC name! ha ha

I don't think I've ever taken it with me and we've been in it 3 times! Oh well, Henry may never make another Crufts, Ellie isn't qualified, and if I get a puppy to show from this litter I'll know to get the pedigree name on the certificate for the future! Thanks. :)

Firstly congratulations & secondly, whilst you are asked to take photocopies to Crufts of the certificate I have never been asked to produce the certificate in the years I have been doing it.

I got a huge amount of grief last monday when my girl passed her silver, not only did I have to put the name I'm known by in the dog world, I also asked for her KC name to be put on it, so when the certificates & rosettes were handed out everyone else was "Scruffy" handled by "Joe".  I did try to explain....... to be honest, I don't care - she passed :-P

Congratulations on your silver, Obviously we just can't win on the name thing can we!

Hi! Can you enter dogs in 'good citizen' breed classes with just the bronze award or does it have to be gold?
- By Jaspersmum [gb] Date 07.06.10 06:49 UTC
The schedule I saw says Bronze or above.  Probably best to check schedules in case there is a variation though
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 07.06.10 08:50 UTC
Carol, it's just bronze & above.  I did suggest to the KC that for Crufts they had two classes now one for Gold passes as in SWDs our Good Citizen classes are huuuuge.

My daughter did bronze with our younger dog, but doesn't want to carry on to silver.
I assumed I could continue it, but alas it is up to me now to do it at bronze again, with the same dog, before I can take her on to silver.

Karen i've not heard this before. Its the dog who is going through the training, how can the handler make any difference? We have couples and kids come along and they change handlers through classes and also through awards, its passing the award on the day that counts for the dog!! Well that's what happens with our trainer..
- By Dogz Date 07.06.10 16:27 UTC
Mad isn't it.............. I am still under the impression it is KC rules.
Or maybe our trainer is just keen to keep her classes full
- By MADDOG [gb] Date 07.06.10 17:13 UTC
Really did I get that right?  If a dog has gained a bronze or silver award & it has a new handler/owner then they both have to go back to square one???!
- By Dogz Date 07.06.10 21:12 UTC
Yup........that is what the trainer told me when I wanted to carry on to silver after my daughter did the bronze with same dog, but didn't want to carry on.  :(

Karen,

I think you need to double check that with the KC, i'm sure they can't do that?? You can pass the awards at many places now without the need to attend classes, so i really can't see how on earth this trainer can say such a thing..

One of our breed clubs you can take the awards, they would have no idea who the handler was from one year to the next, plus on top of that they often have different assessor's..
- By Dogz Date 07.06.10 21:28 UTC
I will ask her as I have looked at KC stuff and it just say 'dogs need certificate of bronze'.
It is too late anyhow as the course started for silver a couple of weeks ago.
I am fed up about it.......but.........suppose will have to wait now.

I was suprised when the certificate showed a handlers name but then I suppose a lot of the questions for the Bronze concerned the handlers knowledge of grooming and keeping a dog healthy and legal!  Only part of the test was about the dogs obedience levels.
