- By black fairy [fr] Date 27.05.10 14:57 UTC Edited 27.05.10 15:12 UTC
oooh ! i must ask this...as i am on page 57 with interuptions from playing with 2 toys pup needs...and i read..in the perfect puppy ONE MISTAKE on this page...oh si...it is on about if a dog is AFRAID of PASSING CARS to GIVE IT TITBITS to reassure it and have i assume POSITIVE FEELINGS TOWARDS CARS !!! AAAAARH NON !!! NON NON NON !!! DO NOT DO THAT !!

my eyebrows went up of course at the word i hate..tidbit...ah...thought it was titbit...i stand corrected...or is it a misprint ? anyhows...i am AGAINST THIS ADVICE !

why ? CARS PASSING ON ROAD ARE NOT THINGS FOR PUP TO THINK NICE !!! mine gets carsick i add...so ? does not LIKE THE SIGHT Of a car close due to that...so ? teaching her KERB CONTROL has been EASY so far !

what DOES frighten or startle a dog i suggest is the LOUD NOISE and RUSH OF AIR as a car or bus passes...so ? i suggest HOLDING said pup in arms at a roadside..then...sitting pup and standing at roadside with passing cars...but saying STOP...NO GO !!!

none of this TIDBIT stuff !!! goodness gracious me ! my hackles rose at the sight of TREATS again for TRAINING...another Thread here on this forum elsewhere...CARS ARE NICE REWARDS WITH TIDBITS ???? not by me mates !

i am not training my pup to be a blind dog guide...would like to know how to i admit...when BLIND DRUNK ??? could be useful !! LOL !! a joke i add..

i am teaching pup...AVOID MOVING CARS on roads...OFF road even ! these things COME OFF the road sometimes ! so ? GET OUT OF THE WAY but DO NOT RUN !

now i dunno about CAR CHASER dogs...there are some...my sister's cross patterdale is one...SMACK the thing i would DARE say to that for CHASING CARS ! oooh...well WHAT IS WORSE ? a RUN OVER DOGGIE or a smacked one ?

FEAR of CARS is a MUST ! at least AVOIDANCE of them...and how to get a dog or pup to UNDERSTAND what a car can do ??? that question...is one I WOULD LOVE AN ANSWER TO !!! simulated HIT ? if i could....i would do it ! with a CAR LOOKING OBJECT !

but..i don;t want my pup to RUN from cars ! that is just as bad and risky to her and car drivers safety !

PAVEMENT is a word i have taught my pup...that is AN ORDER...GET ON THE PAVEMENT..of course here in FRANCE they are JAMMED PACKED with PARKED CARS often so NOT EASY to order that...pup already is cheesed off with me for not being as SLIMLINE as she is to walk around the inside of them...sees ME walking around them on the road after i have just told her PAVEMENT !!! sigh....she does look oddly at me for that...i am only at page 57...there is loads of GREAT stuff in here...but this one comment...and CARS !! my HORROR and of course the TIDBIT stuff...those 2 words...are RED LIGHT ZONE to me meaning not S word but DANGER ...

that PATTERDALE CROSS CHIHOUAUA pup of 8 months is it now old ? STANDS IN FRONT OF A MOVING CAR BARKING EVEN !!! no kidding ! he BARKS LIKE MAD facing an ONCOMING CAR in his road ! i could not BELIEVE IT ! and if someone is IN A PARKED CAR ? he BARKS AT THEM TOO ! and if the car is MOVING along a PAVEMENT he is walking on ? ooh ! it RUSHES AS CLOSE AS HE CAN to it BARKING MAD !...oh..did i mention what dog that is i am on about ? my sister...one of her 2 now dogs...had 3...2 danes and this small dog...her daugher was fed up with big dogs...wanted one of her own...an active one...well THIS THING is LESS CONTROLLABLE than 2 great danes i can tell you ! it is NOT A SOFT OPTION for a kid of 12 that i say ! i will see if there is a section in this book about BARKING AT CAR DOGS ...i have other books coming soon too...but hey...this writer ASSUMES dogs FEAR cars on page 57...well SOME have the OPPOSITE PROBLEM !!

non...index has 2 car bits...leaving in car and travel in car...missed reference to not fearing cars bit...and missing maybe CHASING CARS !! ooh...there are car chasers...NOT MY pup i add...she HATES cars !

Rushing at cars and barking is possibly a sign of fear as is chasing them to make them go away. That is why you pair the spproach of a car with something positive. What you are trying to do is make them not want to chase it away.
Would you like to live in fear all day long? That is what you are expectiong your pup to do. Dogs do not learn road sense in the same way that we do, which is why dogs should be on the lead near roads.  What you want her to do is habituate so that she gets used to cars passing enough not to react.
The person who wrote that book is  a very experienced dog trainer so i wouldn't just ignore what she says just because you think you know better. Your pup is still young and you have not even gone through the hardest time yet.
I did exactly what the book says feeding treats every time a car went past as my pup was scared of traffic. She now no longer cowers when they go past, she jsut ignores them. That is what you want.
I sometimes think you are trying to start an argument as you keep going on about the food treats, we have already been down this road.

Im afraid I read your post and laughed.  What on earth are you on about?!  Your use of capitals is a bit odd and not only did I find your post difficult to read, the parts about hitting a dog with a simulated car to teach it what to do and smacking it were just ridiculous.  I have read some of your other posts just to make sure what I was saying and that I was not coming over as picking up on just cultural differences of language and dog training, but Im completely sure that what you are saying is quite inflammatory even in your own country.

"i am not training my pup to be a blind dog guide...would like to know how to i admit...when BLIND DRUNK ??? could be useful !! LOL !! a joke i add."

For your information as a guide dog puppy walker, that was not funny really, (blind dog??! guide, We use treats in abundance and I promise you that our pups learn in a positive happy way so that they can do their job properly.  Im also 100% sure that everyone on this forum probably has pockets full of treats or even their dogs favourite toy/whatever is their motivator to have fun with.

I smell troll....

> I smell troll....

No, she's not a troll. Just one of life's colourful characters. English is not her native language either.
You're quite right about the treats though. Every pocket I have seems to have some kind of crumbs in the lining.

>the word i hate..tidbit...ah...thought it was titbit...i stand corrected...or is it a misprint

No, the correct spelling (and pronunciation) is 'titbit'.

The last thing anyone wants is a dog that's afraid of cars - apart from how unhappy they are, they're an accident waiting to happen. So you desensitise them to traffic so that they're happy and relaxed walking along the pavement, neither trying to chase them nor trying run away.

oooh i am not discarding the advice at all ! just asking...for my sister in fact if not obvious...and looking as it occured to me it is a prob...how does one stop a dog car chasing ?? now that is not the issue in that good book i add...so...never mind the other issues...THAT is the issue i was struck by...although i was puzzled by word tidbit...i thought it was titbit...

well use treats for other dogs as you please ! i don't ! can't be bothered...and my pup is a DIFFICULT EATER...thinks EATING is a NASTY THING i force her to do for reasons she does not understand...but...i reckon...me STARVING HER ON THE STUPID LOCAL ADVICE here in FRance...made her IRRITABLE...it was supposed to do what that ? MAKE HER EAT DRY FOOD ! and what turned her nasty ? EATING out of DESPEREATION some dog pooh ! yes it ALL STARTED with the dRY FOOD therefore i say ! i had a ROW and FIGHT with my pup over STARVING HER ! and i am VERY ANNOYED ABOUT IT !

btw...i said i would find training as guide dogs USEFUL...no insult there...the joke was on ME if i were BLIND dRUNK...which is an ENGLISH ExPRESSION i do not know what it is based on but commonly used.

now what else do i need to respond to here ? not seeing an adequate response to HOW TO CHANGE A CAR CHASSING TERRIER CHIHOUSAUA CROSS PUP ? is it AFRAID of cars ? well maybe...that is the only suggestion here i see...so ? WHAT to do ? it is CARSICK i add in cars...like my pup is...but SHE HATES cars and aVOIDS THEM in case she gets PUT IN ONE !

oh..what country is what considered offensive ? well I WAS BORN IN GB so stuff that racist slur on me ! i suggest ! and what is OFFENSIVE to ONE member of a familly is NOT to another...so there are NO UNIVERSAL rules on this unless ? USING FOUL LANGUAGE ?

lets not GO DOWN THAT RIDICULOUS argument again...i have had it ALL MY LIFE ! and i am IMPERRFECT but BETTER THAN MOST CHAZ people in GB at English ! and there are LOADSA them ! who cannot spell ! LOL !!

i am not interested in anyone'es views on my lingo...if you don't understand what i am getting at...ignore me...now..what IS interesting me...is WHAT TO DO ABOUT CAR CHASING DOGS !!

now i made some EXTREME suggestions ! but THINKING OUT OF THE BOX or LATERAL THINKING as EDUARD DE BONO would call it THAT I HAD MY HEAD STUFFED WITH on MANAGEMENT COURSES and thought then...it is just a FANCY term for STUPID IDEAS ! so ? yes maybe my ideas are STUPID ! tell me that if you wish ! i can live with THAT view better than than other comments i add...

but i said...i would HIT a dog to STOP IT CAR CHASING if it came to it ! i have not had that to face...but i whacked that terrier once already at my sister's and would whack it for chasing cars ! but i am willing to be ENLIGHTENED !! behave differently ! reading here there are other ways ! but is anyone going to suggest...GIVE IT TIDBITS next to cars ? it was not in the book this problem...so ?

out in the open...CUT THREW THE CHAFF to get to the ESSENCE or what is it ? the WHEAT of the message and ISSUE i say !! LOL !

TROLL ? i am a FAIRY ! TRolls are SORT of fairies but FAIRIES are NICER than TROlls !

OOOH !! J G ! i was RIGHT !! TITBIT !! the publishers !! DID Not QC !!! it is ALL OVER THE BOOK AS TIDBIT !!! LOL !!! I SPOTTED AN ENGLISH TECHNICAL TERM INCORRECTION !!! LOL !! Pat me on ? rump ? back ? LOL !!
- By MsTemeraire Date 27.05.10 18:02 UTC

> No, the correct spelling (and pronunciation) is 'titbit'.

I've seen 'tidbit' used a lot more often these days. Is that the American version, I wonder? or over-PC censorship of the 'tit' word?
Anyone remember the old magazine called Titbits? It has nothing to do with the first three letters but we giggled about it as kids.

those idiots on the golf course...brits probably...keep sending their balls into the WATER...sigh..and pup was going WILD DIGGING to get UNDER at them !!! LOL !! ooh i had to come in...they get on my nerves those golfers.

WELL THE FRENCH ARE TOO LAZY TO RUN AFTER bALLS !!! except RUgby if BRUTES like EU champs Toulouse...i wrote to local authorities saying MY PUP could CATCH A BALL BETER THANT EH TOULOUSE RUGBY CLUB !!! LOL !!! they ignore me...THANKS THAT YOU LOT DONT !

READERS DIGEST !!! NEW YORK !!! JAWOHL !! we have the SOLUTION !!! LOL !! ooh i get criticised for using that word in Germany,...FAR TOO SENSITIVE i say to them...GET OVER IT ! and they HAVE TO ! to LISTEN TO ME !!! LOL !! it is the solution...but WHAT IS SOLUTION TO PUPS CHASING CARS ??? i do not LET GO !!!

MS TEM ! you have ? a dirty mind ??? LOL !! in all these YEARS...the first 3 letters of that word ? it NEVER OCCURRED TO ME !!! LOL !! that it was ANATOMY !!! ooh you BRITS are such PRUDES !!!
- By MsTemeraire Date 27.05.10 18:10 UTC

> my book is in bag...but was posted from the USA...so TIDBIT is in too !

That's interesting. Just looked my UK version of the same book and the word is 'titbit'. I think we have our answer :)

Not a troll :-)  a very enthusiastic puppy owner, lithuanian, living in France, conversing in English :-)  If find it difficult to read in english, but use a French accent, the capitals are Latin emphasis.. it gets easier
- By lucyandmeg [gb] Date 27.05.10 18:18 UTC
You stop a dog chasing cars but desensitising them to it. As the book says you start off at a distance your dog is comfortable with (with the dog on a lead) where it can see cars but doesn't feel the need to chase and reward it for not reacting. (usually best done with food but can be with toys if it is safe to do so. ) then you gradually move closer to the cars and reward not reacting until it is not bothered by them. You would start off with a slow road and if you need to work up to the faster moving cars. you would always prevent them from chasing by using a lead. You don't want to wait for them to chase and then punishing them as they are already getting a huge reward from chasing the car (adrenaline rush, the car goes away) so you are unlikely to have any effet at all.
your pup is food motivated if its the right food, you said yourself she wanted your own food, which is exactly what i would use, human food is much more interesting than dog food.

yes that patterdale...is hard to BORE however...but ...as a pup he gets VERY TIRED...now if he were to be made to sit watching loads cars...he would tire of them maybe...HE is the problem...

oh FAIRY is DONE with DRY DOG FOOD ! and i am annoyed i was so weak and starved her as others do here to try and get her to eat it. I really disapprove philosophically about that attitude. good.

that needs PATIENCE...and a the 12 year old girl owner ? sigh...that is the prob...KIDS ! am reading about KIDS being a problem in this book just now...sigh...and there was me not having my own thinking they are little darlings...well NOT READING THIS BOOK ! they are HORRIBLE TORTURERS or potential ones ! aweful ! kids ! who would have thought it !

'Tis very recommended for basic obedience classes - nothing creates a difficult dog so fast, as being confused by all members of the family giving it different commands. So yes, the whole family must be involved, to know how to interact with the dog.

As for chasing cars, then some good classes and some good groundwork in training WILL help get the owners back in control, as they will help to focus the dog and get the dog to listen to the owners more. If the chasing habit continues then a session of 1-1 training with a very good trainer or behaviourist will help.

Travel sickness in cars, is as far as I know, caused by fear & nervousness. Although your puppy appears brave, she is probably very nervous underneath, as Belgian pups often are. You will need to gently condition her to feel safe and comfortable in a car, and all that will stop. She is still very young but as she gets older she might start to challenge you about things she is not happy with - so do everything you can to gently help her now. That's what is meant when people say "x/y/z breed" needs a lot of early socialisation.

that chich/patterdale is a psycho...in my view...i DID help niece ...neice in English...with stopping him PUULING on lead and RECALL...by ? PATIENCE...just REFUSING to let him off lead until he clmed down...and a spank...he was NOT happy about that...was VERY upset and ran off in the woods and it took 1 hour for him to come near me again...sigh...same as my Belgian for that hey ! a a ROUGH breed allegedly...just is NEVER SPANKED !!! neice saw me do it of course...and whacked him the next time he would nto get into her mums car...sigh...oh yes i admit it all now...i set a bad example...to a youngser...sigh...viv will have put a stop to that now i add...she lets dogs do ANYTHING !

car sickness...nerves...or as in my case, an ear balance humans have outta synch...if i am not driving ? i get carsick...within 2 minutes feel woosy...so pup is not vomiting anymore...but like paterdal in car looks sleepy very fast and slobbers quite a bit...that is nerves i think not just heat of sud france...

now...off to make chicken currry !!! LOL !! and give you lot a BREAK from my what was it diplomatically described as ? COLOURFUL style ???? oh...that could be considered a NON PC comment too if we want to look for things to be picky about hey !!! ooh GB is overboard on it i say...things go too far before they get SANE again in all things...PC correctness ? is OUTTA HAND. LOL !!! BONSOIR if you fancy one ...if not READ JA IN THE MORNING !!! LOL !!merci...mercy !

viv needs to deal with this CAR CHASING ! not that her lazy daughter as most kids is taking pup out alone ! but SHE could end up in accident trying to save pup i say !

socialising my pup ? GOOD GOD !! why do you think i have GONE TO THESE ROUGH SEX MAD FULL OF FRENCHMEN AFTER ONE THING BARS SO OFTEN ??? if not to SOCIALISE MY PUP ??? the things we do hey ! to SOCIALISE A PUPPY !!!! LOL !!! BONSOIR...
- By Heidi2006 Date 31.05.10 16:17 UTC

> and a spank...he was NOT happy about that...was VERY upset and ran off in the woods and it took 1 hour for him to come near me again...sigh...

Spanking will just tell your dog that YOU ARE NOT NICE TO BE WITH.  So, he runs away thinking - 'if I go back I will get hit".  It could also make him be violent in his attitudes to you and others - even your niece -  "violence breeds violence" or another quote "he who lives by the sword dies by the sword"

What others have said about giving titbits is great advice [I hate the word 'tidbits' too, by the way].  If he's getting over-excited about cars it's a great idea to get him even more excited about something else whenever there's a car about; it doesn't matter if what you get him excited about is food [human or dog] or a toy or a game or whatever, so long as he's more interested in that thing than the car.  He will then learn to ignore the cars.  It will take quite some time and a lot of patience and hard work.  It will be more long-lasting and will work in so many other ways as he will learn to trust and respect you when there is something scary or exciting or unusual.
Good luck
- By black fairy [fr] Date 31.05.10 17:33 UTC
yes the spank did nothing for his mood. distracting him is easy ! that terrier thing is toy mad ! maybe thinks cars are toys to run after...i would like to know WHY dogs chase cars more...do they see them as things that move so prey drive ? so many books to read...not in the one i have nearly finished...fear has been suggested ...

what is that link ? it is not a page with anything on ?
- By Heidi2006 Date 31.05.10 17:42 UTC
Hi Black Fairy
That link thing is my mess up.  I was trying to quote you but somehow added the link too.

I think you're spot on with the prey drive.  I think also if you can be calm in yourself that will help too.

What breed is he?
- By black fairy [fr] Date 01.06.10 05:52 UTC
now this is interesting...it is a cross chihouhua and patterdale..how come ? ah deliberate...my 12 year old neice was looking for a pup on web and found a big website with all sorts...cant recall link could find it easily has rabbits all sorts...and it is a woman ex zoo keeper who bred her 2 dogs for this and it cost 400 gbp which astonished me for a mongrel..just goes to show hey...now it has nicer face than standard chihouhau due to patterdale face type i see and a bit bigger than a chich...but the nature ? oooh is a Fireball...it is a delightful pup...very very human friendly indeed even tho a ferocious barker at door to strangers and hostile inititially...

it plays NON STOP...you watch a film at 2am ? sundown or something i was watching...about sun about to die if a spaceship didn't send a rocket to jump start it enough...a kamikaze mission it was...worked...anyhow the pup instead of sleeping kept bringing me the ball..non stop...sigh...it was TIRED...eyes closing so tired as it stood in front of me sometimes...but WOULD IT STOP AND SLEEP ? NON !
