Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / time for mum to stop feeding?
- By jokelly [gb] Date 25.05.10 11:16 UTC
Our litter is 5 and a half weeks, thoroughly enjoying their food.  Mum is really not interested in them but I am making her go in with them to give them a drink and so they have some contact with her!  Would they be ok now to only have one top-up from her, perhaps last thing at night?  Also wonder if they should have some puppy milk as a supplement?  Am feeding them soaked Burns mixed with naturediet.

if your girl dont want to feed them dont make her ,just let her be able to get to them if she wants to , yes you can give them some puppy milk to drink, but if their drinking water and eating well milk shouldnt be needed at this age and sometimes if their not use to it can give them the runs at this age.

at 5.5 weeks we make our bitch go in in the morning and last thing at night to start weening them off then knock it down to once a day at 6 weeks then once every couple of days until 7 weeks and they are usually fully weened by then. one litter we did a little sooner as the litter started on proper solids sooner i think it just depends on the bitch, pups and the breed of dog, just my opinion though

hope this helps

I would never MAKE a bitch go into her pups, once weaning had started, but always alllow her to be able to.

Mine is constantly hanging around her pups because she believes...... PUPS =FOOD she has had her food cut back and she's so hungry.

I have to make sure they are not always sucking.
At six and a half weeks they dont need her but - boy do they love her!

Agree with Brainless.  I don't make my bitches go in morning, noon or night!

If she wants to sleep with them, it's up to her.  And if she wants to feed them, it's her choice.  I don't ever make the choice for them.  I just ensure that mum can get away from pups if she wants, and pups can't follow.

Most of my bitches give pups a comfort suckle on the day they leave home.
