HI

I have mated my dog and bitch for the first time.

Is it usual for the bitch to cry out when the dog enters her?  They have not tied off.

The dog has been on and off her for 4 days now.  He now seems to have given up.

Can anyone help?

She cries out because she is scared, probably. A lot of maiden bitches cry. If he has not managed to enter her properly she may have a stricture that is preventing it. A trip to the vet would tell you that.

She may well be crying out if she isn't really ready.  I do agree though, checking that she doesn't have a stricture would put your mind at rest.

When you say that the dog is on and off her, don't forget that it also depends on his experience.  My boys usually just give a sniff, and won't waste their energy if she doesn't smell ready.  Novice boys often get it wrong.  So don't assume that he knows best!  :-)
