Topic Dog Boards / General / Couldn't believe my ears when I heard this!

My six year old son came home from school yesterday , and as usual we had our chat about his day etc.

He was excited to tell me what had happened to his friend , he said " You wouldn't believe what happened to Josh this morning ! , he woke up and there were lots of puppies beside his bed !"

Well you could of blown me over , I should of seen this happening , the family have two little terriers ( won't say the breed ) the dog just over a year , and the bitch can only be 9/10 month. I've had a lot on my mind at the minute with one of my dogues having problems so I haven't been sleeping , but I got this onto my mind last night and got absolutely no sleep.
It has angered me soo much to think these people who work full time , leave their children with child minders , have a litter of pups with no problems , no health tests , and how are they going to wean these puppies when they are both at work all day.
And the likes of us on here including myself do all the health testing available , end up rushing our dogs to the vets for emergency c sections , etc etc. It makes my blood boil , I hope I see the mother around at the school so I can tell her how irresponsible she is!

Poor little bitch! Yes it drives you mad, I've been trying my best to do everything responsibly and these people get these huge great litters (not that I want a huge litter, just an average size one!) without even trying. :(

Well, if they are out at work all day you can smile to yourself that their home is going to absolutely stink of poop and pee and no doubt the pups will end up covered in it too, they will be noisy and yapping and neighbours will probably complain. They will be under stimulated and only have each other to play with causing even more noise.

The bitch may accidently kill some of her pups too. :-( The pups will no doubt also wake up early with the bright mornings so they will also be waking the household up too. If a huge amount of food is just put down for the whole day then some pups will be big monsters and no doubt have diarrhea with over eating and others will not be getting their share, also the food may well be mixed in all over the place with the poop.

So although they may be smiling now, in a few weeks time they will probably be pulling their hair out.

Ditto to Carrington -let's just hope they don't chick the pups out into a garden shed or similar. Nothing much harder than the time when pups all round around pooing everywhere, especially if you have not prepared for it well in advance and know how to cope with it!

Yes you are right , I bet in 2 or 3 weeks their house is stinking!!
I heard the kids child minder telling another child minder this morning that they are planning on keeping one of the bitch puppies.
I do hope they have the dog neutered or I can see a father , daughter mating happening next year.

I wouldnt really smile at that. I'd be worrying what they do with the pups when they realise what a huge task it is to care for them with all the nresponsibilites that come with it.

maybe, rather than having a go at this lady at what has happened, some advice can be given about how to care for the pups and how she can avoid this situation in the future by castrating/neutering one or both of her dogs.

I wouldn't be smiling at that either. It can be a case of ignorance and this family may well not have planned for this to occur. If I was concerned, I'd try to befriend the person, offering advice rather than tell them just how irresponsible they are. Soemtimes people just do not know any better, but it doesn't make them bad people. They will find it hard work and it may well put things into perspective for them in a few weeks, but at least with some friendly advice and help, these pups might stand a chance of at least having a half decent upbringing, rather than suffering because of ignorance.

Carrington, I would like to think this would happen, but! these people never seem to have any problems with their children or the way they just breed there dogs! Its the likes of us that seem to have all the hard work and problem with c/sections. It may be that they just don't care.

That's a good idea - come on here to relieve your feelings at the idiots in private, but outwardly try to get to know the family better and educate them so that they realise what they did was wrong?

I will try and catch the mother for a chat , it's just she works full time and you only see her at the school once every three weeks or so.
I'll have a little chat about the puppies and see if she's managing , I can offer advice on weaning etc , when the hard times start for them. I'll also mention the importance of neutering the dog if they're intending on keeping a bitch puppy!

Unfortunately the house probably won't stink of poop and wee because this type of owner will give away or sell the puppies as soon as they are tottering about. when i was working in the vets here we had a lady bring in a puppy her husband had bought through a 'friend at the pub' the poor puppy must have been about 3.5 weeks old max! If not given away or sold they will no doubt end up in a rescue and if the bitch is lucky she will be with her puppies and be rehomed too.

LucyDogs, that also isn't so easy. you only get abuse, and told it is up to them, what they do.
I wish there was an easy answer

"LucyDogs, that also isn't so easy. you only get abuse, and told it is up to them, what they do.

I guess that would depend on how the matter was approached. I don't see how this could be the case unless you went in with a 'holier than thou' attitude in the first place.

The reason these people don't face c-sections and problems etc... well that's a whole new topic in itself! :)

I wonder why she wants to keep a bitch from the litter, does she intend to breed with it too?
- By denese [gb] Date 27.05.10 16:02 UTC
The Mutts.
There are many people breeding dogs around the midlands just mating them and leaving them to have puppies, then breeding them again on there next season, and so on, it does not matter how nice you try to tell them, or how nice you try to be, they just give you loads of abuse. Then tell you to F**    o**    it is not worth it.
The only people you can educate are those who ask, that is far easier. I have had many of those. But! after finding out all the hard work it is, they decide not to breed, as they are at work, and are not willing to loose any time.

I fully understand that, but the kind of person you speak of are often the type that do plan it and have puppies just for the money, don't care about the conditions and mess, because they take no pride in themselves, both in appearance and attitude. They are easy to spot. I don't think it's fair to tar everyone with the same brush and I don't see how asking a few general questions and showing an interest to befriend the person and get a feel for the situation would bring you under fire, unless you go about it the wrong way.

"it does not matter how nice you try to tell them"

But that's the problem isn't it... I'm not talking about telling them 'how it is'. :) They'll find that out for themselves. It's not hard to befriend someone and slip a few suggestions in or bring about a topic of conversation to test the water. You'll soon know if the person is open to a little help and advice.
