Hi my bitchs litter will be 5 weeks on monday, weaning is going well, they are eating and drinking ( 5 meals a day) without any problems, Mum has only fed them once in the last 24 hours, she is SO full of milk, her breasts  are enormous !.. but doesnt seem interested in feeding them at all. Will her milk just  dry up or is there anything i should be doing to help her? Is 5 weeks too early for her to not be feeding them?

its a hard 1 it would be best if mum would feed them 2/3 times aday still but if she just will not then you could get a hot flanel and wash her milk bar down and hold the flanel on them will will help the milk to go down and she will feel more comfy!

Can you persuade her to lie still for even a short time to let them suckle even once a day? Otherwise 5 weeks is fine to be fully weaned as long as the puppies are happy to eat the solid food. And like White Lilly says, just wipe her down with a warm / hottish cloth to make sure the milk doesn't clog up and encourage mastitis.

We usually get the bitch to do the last feed for the pups at night time.  If the bitches milk doesn't dry up naturally and the teats are starting to become painful, the vet can give galastop drops which usually dry the milk up within a couple of days.
