Almost 4 week old pup, bitch, one of seven, started weaning at 3 weeks.

She is always dirty, not her actual bum, but down the inside of her back legs, not smelly though, it hasn't just started but always seems to have been like it.

She is as forward and a similar size to the others, vet couldn't find anything wrong and says some are just always dirty and to clean her with non scented baby wipes.

Have any of you experienced this?

Is she the only one like it in the litter?

I had a pup like this in my last litter and thought there was something wrong with her waterworks, she always had urine marks down the inside of her back legs.
She was fine though, went to her new home, no probs, housetrained fine. So hopefully your pup is the same.

triona, yes she is the only one like it.

Liz, that sounds very much the same, it's reassuring to hear yours was fine. I was convinced she must be leaking from somewhere! :-)

I had a pup like that, was always wet on the inside of her legs, it was a urine infection, cleared up with treatment and no further problems.   Apparently female pups are more prone to it than the male pups in a litter.

Has your vet given her antibiotics in case of infection?

It is possible she is a 'wet puppy' where her plumbing isn't quite right.  I don't think you should consider selling her as she is and more investigation is needed.  I have experience of a wet puppy and was told when I first had an inkling what it was to have her PTS - I didn't and she has had surgery to correct the problem.  Even after this I didn't feel it was right to sell her so she has stayed here and is the most wonderful dog anyone could ask for.

I really do think you need to keep an eye on her and make regular visits to your vet.  It may be something he hasn't come across.  Also do some research about ectopic urethra on the internet.

Cd. just simply be that she bends down lower than the rest when going to the toilet and so gets wet.

Hi, she has been like it at least from a week old, so not that she crouches down lower.

Ellsbells, it is not my pup, but the breeder (ex oh) has said that he will keep her if need be.
My first thought was also that plumbing was not quite right, infact still think that.
Vet didn't seem to think ab's were necessary, he apparently did a scan which showed nothing abnormal, I am going to google that now and pass it on, thanks.

I wonder if a vet would scan such a young puppy, it would be very difficult to see much due to their size.  Positive thoughts though and pleased to hear your ex oh will keep her regardless.

Hi, she has been like it at least from a week old, so not that she crouches down lower At a week old she would be right down to the ground any way so could still be something as simple as this??

I had a pup like this nearly 20 years ago. I can't remember the name I was given for the condition but basically there was no plumbing between the bladder and the way out ;-) so he leaked constantly. I was told he would need an operation to fix it that would cost over £1000 and that there was only a 30% chance of it working :-( I had him PTS at 5 months old after deciding I wasn't willing to put him throuh the op with such a small chance of him being able to live a normal life. I believe that things have come on in leaps and bounds since then, so there may be a much better chance for this puppy. She will really need to see a specialist though, just to find out exactly what the problem is.

ETA: The problem got worse as he grew. His legs were always sore and it did start smelling terrible. Pups urine doesn't smell all that strong at first but as they grow it starts to get stronger.

We read up about ectopic ureter last night, doesn't sound too hopeful, pup is going back to vets this week, thanks for all your help. x

Any updates on pup?
- By cocopop [gb] Date 01.06.10 18:58 UTC
Sadly she was pts this morning, she had a course of ab's, no improvement.
It seemed like it was ectopic ureter, and it would have been a gamble to carry on.
Thanks to those who offered advice.
Sleep tight little one. x

So sorry to hear your news.  I know that people will say it's for the best, but it's never easy to lose a pup.
- By Ells-Bells [gb] Date 02.06.10 05:25 UTC
Such a shame - I wonder, did the explore avenues of surgery?  I feel if these pups are PTS, how are vets ever to get experience in this type of surgery.
May she RIP.

So sorry to hear your news, but having gone through this I can 100% say that I think you did the right thing. It isn't an easy decision to make for anyone.
