Topic Dog Boards / General / When to spay?

Hi

I am a big believer in not spaying to young and let the bitch fully mature first and have always done this.

I have a 14 month whippet who hasnt had a season yet.  My problem is she is very hyper and needs off lead running everyday or she is a nightmare to live with. I am dreading when she dose finally come into season as i really dont know how i am going to live with her. In the past when bitches have come in we have put them in the car and taken them into the middle of the country for a run, i dont have this option anymore since my husband left and i dont drive. My two other girls are spayed.

my options are spaying her before she comes in to season, living with the situation or putting her into kennels. None of these appeal at all.

I am concerned she is still to young, i know vets will do it at 6 months but it seems so wrong to me. My vet included so i cant really ask there advice. Of course she may never come into season and i would be putting her through a op for nothing.

Any suggestions

You may find that when she does come in season she may well be quieter than normal.

As long as you don't have lots of latchkey dogs brisk lead road walking should take the edge off with games in the garden.

Hi

I am hoping this will be the case but she is so hyper. I know if spayed she wont be able to run for a few weeks to but at least i can walk her. We dont have many latchkey dogs around here but there are loads of males that do walk off lead past my house to the fields.

Is 14 months to young to spay. I feel she is still very imature but i might just being over sensative

Thanks

Are you considering spaying because she is hyper, it may not have any effect on that and it could be that she would grow up given time anyway.

Hi

No not spaying because shes hyper, hopeing that will calm down with age. Another reason i feel she is imature.   No i am really worried about the lack of exercise she will get when in season.  She will be a nightmare to live with for both us humans and other pets.

I must stress though i want the best for my girl and if waiting is better i will do that. I have to say thats what my heart is saying. but my head is being practical lol. I love her so much but she is really hard work. We go to a training  class weekly and she wont be allowed to go for 4 weeks when in season. But if waiting is best i will get around all these things. I could even look into doggy day care or day boarding ut dont know if they would want a girl in season.  I know the kennels will take her. Can you tell i am thinking as i type lol.

She will be getting spayed because i dont feel she is good enough to breed from. i have the added stress of my marrage breaking down and being left with two kids and three dogs and finding life quite hard at the moment. hope im making myself clear and not just babbling like a idiot lol
