Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / How can I housetrain my puppy not to pee indoors?

My bernese pup seems to be doing really well house training wise...I'm getting him outside most of the time, on time as I can spot his 'signs' as to when he wants to go.  However, most of my house is wooden floor or tiled (great for cleaning up accidents!)...he doesn't seem to have an accident in these areas though...he seems to ALWAYS run through to the living room to pee on the carpet there (which is of course harder to eliminate the odor) or when I left him in the kitchen with a dog bed....he specifically peed on the dog bed.

If I catch him, I'll quickly shout a firm 'NO' and then run him straight out to the garden.  I know it's early days - but any ideas as to how I can stop this?  I am no longer able to sit in the living room to watch tv because even if he's just been out in the garden, if we're in the living room, he'll go straight and pee on the carpet again...!

Bet he was raised on a vet bed, pups that are seem to look for a soft spot to pee, don't worry he will stop.

Mine would pee on his vet bed til he was 6 months old, sometimes I don't think he even bothered to wake up first!!

It's true though, they do like a soft spot to pee - I think it's because they don't like it splashing on a hard surface :)  It does help with toilet training though as it pretty much guarantees they will pee as soon as their paws hit grass.  In the meantime, use a baby gate to keep him out of carpeted areas unless you are watching him.

As Nova says - they do grow out of it :)

Have you had another dog that's already weed on the carpet and in the bed, even if some time ago? The odour lasts an awful long time, and particularly carpets, even if cleaned the urine scent could still be on the floor and underlay beneath. Also just make sure that the cleaning materials you're using for the wee doesn't contain amonia.

I found it's best to take them outside every hour on the hour except when they are sleeping!

It may seem time consuming but only in the short term and, it saves loads of time cleaning floors and carpets.

It used to be the habit of training using newspapers but this seems to make training take longer.  The pup learns to pee on paper then just when he's got the hang of it we change the rules and expect him to go outside.  Some dogs get very confused.  Seems easier to start as you mean to go on which means teaching him to go outside from the beginning.

prat ! meaning me. i started the wrong thing up and yes she is confused. probably why she has taken to peeing on mats ...have tiles everywhere...would PREFER her to pee on tiles of course ! what a mess ! untraining as in all bad habits is far harder than GET IT RIGHT FIRST TIME ! LOL !!!

But better later than never!!  She's still just baby so with a bit of consistency now she'll learn where to go.

thx. sigh. she only needs showing something once, the second time gels it. now ? i have to unlearn her this pee on mat thing that took only one go at explaining to her with a newspaper  !!

First accept the fact that pups do don't have total control over their bladders until they are about 6 month. That said, take them out when they wake, when they eat and when they finish playing and then if they have not been out for an hour. Praise when they go in the right place, be really excited about it and give the action a name, never scold if it is the wrong place just ignore and clean up using detergent not bleach. Oh! One last thing just because you take them out to pee do not be upset if they don't but come back in and go on the carpet - logic takes a while but they will prefer to go where they get praise that where they get ignored so persevere it will work quickly with just the occasional accident.

Reminds me of a puppy training story - Fred was 4 years old when I bought in a puppy bitch and because he was a bit clumsy she was in a puppy pen unless I was in close attendance. Because at the time we had fitted carpet the puppy pen was placed on a ground sheet and I placed a pile of newspaper in the hope she would use it and not the ground sheet which then ran onto the carpet if I was not quick.

This day I was in attendance and the pen was open and the two adults were playing with the puppy, pup stopped playing and rushed to her newspaper and squatted I praised her and took her outside to finish. The dogs continued playing in the garden for a while when Fred came rushing in and standing in a semi squat over the paper let go what seemed like several gallons. I yelled at him but then realised that he had done it to be praised - that was the last time I ever made provision for a pup to go indoors and I have had no problem with training but it helps a lot if you have adult dogs around to show the pup the way, and place, to go.

puppies can't hold there bladder till over 3 months of age, once my puppies got out of the whelping box they went to news paper near the back door. So at 8 weeks they did there wee and poo on the paper. If new owners moved the paper they wood look for some were to wee, as they do not like it on their feet. So anything that would soak it up would do. This is normal, they are only babies. You could take him outside every hour. But! if you go out and leave him, what is he going to do? I start to put the news paper outside the external door as well, as by the door, they soon get the hang of it
