Last night my Hubby took my ( R.Collie ) out for his eve walk , minding their own business , when what looked like a Shar Pei ran up from behind and attacked Monty , who was on his lead but as he was so frightened he pulled H over who couldn't keep hold of the lead ..H ran to push the Shar Pei off , which he did , but My R.C ran off and eventually found him in someones garden shaking like a leaf .. Why do people let dogs off the lead when they clearly have a tendancy to start a fight !! Luckily Monty is ok ..

so glad your RC is ok , this kind of incident makes me so angry .
when we take our 3 dogs out  what is so funny two of them are oblivious to what is going on as they are happy sniffing all the trees and peeing on everything...where as the biggest girl her  head is on a swivel always looking around hubby calls her 'the enforcer' she is keeping watch  for exactly the kind of incident that happened to you.
What is so peculiar about it is she is the quietest ,sweetest of the three but changes when we are out , when I said to my hubby I wonder why she does it he said...'its her job'!!

Pleased to hear Monty came through it unscathed, hows the hubbie?

I have the misfortune to own a dog and sometimes people aggressive dog, but unlike some he is always on lead and muzzled when we take him out. I was astounded the other day when I actually had somebody apologise to me for their dogs running up and jumping around the beastie (just trying to play really), whilst he was busy trying to have a go! They normally take one look at my Rottie with the dodgy temperament (due to abuse as a youngster before we got him), and immediately point the finger at him, even though he is normally just reacting to being rushed.

But I agree, dogs that have a tendency to show agression should be kept under appropriate control.

I can sympathise having posted a similar incident on here some weeks ago.  Tadsy I wish you were nearer to show a good example to the Rottie owner who I thought wouldn't be long here.  I don't know anything about it's background - but I think it must be bored stiff.  It barked at me from the small backyard which is all it has to run in this morning.  I haven't seen it out for a walk for at least a month - goodness knows where it gets exercised.  I can't see that the owner has a car either.  The owner who has been trying to run a local pub is leaving and because she likes it here has decided to rent a property even closer to me.  Not happy with the fact that the dog can run out of the front door anytime one of the family leaves the door open. I can't even avoid walking past now - it is my only route in and out of my road.  Now it looks like being a more permanent feature I am even more worried.

Hubbie ok too x The majority of dogs we pass on our walks are fine , and the ones that are aggressive do tend to be on their leads ..Last night was just something else ..Really quite a shock as to how quickly our collie could have been badly hurt ..

My last R/Collie would have given the Shar-pei a run for his money , but Monty is completely different .. He wouldn't hurt a fly ..lovely sweet natured boy :)

feel I must add to my above post that my beardie girl who I mention above doesnt attack or pounce at any dogs who do come near she just lets us know they are on thier way over by stopping  and giving  me a look. Although I do feel if any did attempt to jump on any of them she would intervene.

We also call her 'nurse Beth' if anyone coughs or sneezes wherever she is in the house she will walk over and check you are ok and not until you stroke her and say 'I am alright' will she walk off. LOL

ooh this subject is close to my heart too ! i am FURIOUS sometimes with people and their badly behaved dogs ! i yesterday posted on my website RULES of MINE about this for the FRENCH to pay attention to ! and i write to local councils when aggressed by other dogs in parcs ! i will NOT stand for it ! i am VERBALLY abusive to owners of badly behaved dogs also ! why not ? why should WE put up with aggression and not react ? ooh...

"NEVER approach a strange dog to touch or feed it without permission of the owner and dog. Do not INSIST that the dog lets you stroke or pick it up...do NOT pick it up at all in fact. Dogs do not like this from strangers no matter HOW dog friendly you may be. Do not CALL a stranger's dog to you without permission of the owner. Do not let YOUR dogs run up to and bark at other people or other animals. PUT THEM ON LEAD if uncontrollable like that ! a little bark from the DISTANCE is acceptable...but SHUT the dog UP fast in public !"

am sure some locals here have seem my RANTS about them ! in French ! that is a SHORT version in English ! LOL !

now ...i do add...what my breeder stops me doing...MOLLY CODDLING my pup if afraid of other dogs...they said DO NOT DO THAT ! it will encourage the fear in her ! sigh...well at 9 weeks old i HAD to pick her up to avoid bites possible i say to that ! ELEVATION makes a dog think it is SUPERIOR was another criticism i got...sigh...well THEIR pup got BITTEN and now adult is quite aggressive i add ! one HAS to protect a dog from a bite !!! i said i want my pup to know I WILL PROTECT HER ! oh course the other downside of leaving her on the ground is SHE is a GROWLER ! she GROWLED at the dogs in their faces that were growling at her at 9 weeks old ! just WAIT til she gets older ! there could be MIGHTY tearings up of dogs on the cards i say to that ! not by me !

sigh. well sometimes yes, the dogs have to fight to learn maybe i say...best done when pups then ! sigh.
