Topic Dog Boards / General / Hot 'n' sunny holiday for my dog??
- By Dianesdog [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:19 UTC
Hi,
I am wanting to go on holiday in august and take my dog with me, can anybody recommend somewhere that is nice and warm so the humans can get a tan, and is not 1000's of miles driving?
Ideally i'd like to stay in a villa type abode with a pool, any thoughts, all idea's are greatly appreciated.

I , well OH is off on a farm cottage break now and its dog friendly (Jake is with him) so I just put in dog friendly holiday and had 1000's of choice. Or farm cottages and they say on each one one or two pets or none. Reasonable cost oh and a canal boat - I recommend Clifton Cruisers and Reading Marina we take our two on one at least once a year and you can sunbath on the roof, hitch up next to a pub and walk the dog along the tow bath's.

If you can sort out your travel arrangements there are plenty of great places in France, and they are generally pretty good about pets.

We've used French Country Cottages quite a lot but you can get cheaper prices by Googling to look for private listings

Good luck

personally if it was warm and sunny my own dogs wouldnt want to be there themselves as they dislike heat. maybe stick to the UK?

Depends on the breed but most dogs would be happier in the sort of temperature they are used to, I believe that they grow the coat they need for the temperature they live in. If you are moving to a warmer or colder climate on a permanent basis that will be sorted but to change the environment for a couple of weeks is not in the best interest of the dogs so perhaps you should go to sunbathe and leave your dogs in kennels.

I understand your wish to see the sun after such a long winter and spring - oh for some blue sky - and I don't know if your breed adapts to the heat better than ours. Who dislike it and don't get out of neutral after 10am on a warm day. Cold they can cope with but heat no. Living by the sea I am always shocked by the amount of owners who take their dogs with them to the beach on the hotest of days, they are there all day and no shade or seeing them dragged around in full midday heat on the hot pavements. If you want a relaxing break in the sun & heat, I would leave the dogs behind in comfort.

Ive got a sun lover who finds any piece of sun to lie in. Then a shade hugger who flops by every bush and sleeps behind the garden shed!! you cant win them all.

Do your dogs have a pet passport? ITs too late to get one now for this August if not. There are no guarentees with the british weather but its probably best to stick to somewhere in britain to allow the dog to enjoy his holiday without overheating.

I am not 100% but I think if you travel out of the UK with a passport, then you cannot travel to another country other than the UK until 21 days time? Sou you can go to France, but not to Italy from France. I think this is right?

Depends what you want but i took leo to Scotland, Lakes, Devon and Southsea - personally i liked the latter it always seems to be hot there and i get sunburnt. There is a best western hotel there that takes dog no problems, areas of the beach you can take them on.... you can take them on the hovercraft over to the isle of wight where most of the pubs etc dont mind you sitting outside with your dogs as long as they behave

The place i went to in devon was more dog friendly than human - called the portlight i think it was bolberry downs or something like that - only has about 6 rooms, dogs allowed in the dining room - loads of walking, nearby dog friendly beach at hope cove - was nice and hot when we went there too
