im always intrigued by all these posts for sheep scanners......why dont people just go to their vets???
- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 17.05.10 21:08 UTC
I personally think it is because most Vets won't let you have numbers only confirmation of a pregnancy. My own Vet will always give me an indication of numbers as he knows that I won't hold him to a specific number. Also, some Vets are just not good at reading scans.

plus some vets charge alot of money and not very good!

Most vets shave the bitches tummy meaning if she is not pregnant she is still out of the show ring for ages while it all grows back. Sheep scanners don't and will often come to the house meaning less stress for bitch and can be shown again straight away if they have missed.

I am just too far away for him to come to Alison. I asked but thanks for suggestion x

I used the sheep scanners in the past but the nearest one for me is a two hour drive.  Fuel cost and cost of scan makes it cheaper to use my own vet 5 mins down the road who now has a scanner but just not the experience.  But then if I don't go how they ever going to learn and they are getting better at it every time.

re shaving the belly if you ask them not to they won't and if they do have to they can shave my Papillons without removing the visible coat at the sides so they can still be shown if thats what I want to do.

My vets shaved last time before they knew I showed my dogs, this time they told me they wouldn't shave & had no problem scanning. She is a coated breed and was quite hairy so really don't know why they need to shave any dog? Angela

it makes their job alot easier! :(

If I ever see a new vet in the practice I always tell them not to shave any hair whatsoever and they can still see any pups if there are any.

Lots of vets won't give excact numbers not because they don't know but because some people take them literally. I have heard of many cases where a vet has said for example, a bitch is carrying 6 pups so the person waits for the 6th pup to be born then leaves the bitch, comes back to find some more pups possibly dead and then try to blame the vet! I do know that some have tried to sue.

I am quite happy to know if my bitch is pregnant, not bothered in numbers unless there is only 1 or 2 so maybe have to think about the possiblity of a caesar.

My vets are good and they are near Leeds.

Right I'm mixed up!  I was told that Keith Shea the Fit and Fertile guy is different to Keith O'Shea the person who does the scans, is this correct???
