Hi, I'm new to forums but need some advice, my bitch is on day 64 from first mating, second one she wasn't keen on so not sure if it will count (2 days later), she has gone off her food for two days now, only nibbling, she has had the runs since Thursday night, and been sick since Saturday night, she's very sleepy, quite contented, no discharge, no swelling, got milk. I have been doing temp for a week now, 99 during the day 100 at night? I think i'm just worried about her not eating and the diarrhea? Should i be?
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 17.05.10 10:51 UTC
Bitches usually have slight runs before whelping, its their way of having a clean out so they dont poo whilst birthing.
Since this has been going on since thursday I would take her to the vet, just to put your mind at ease and make sure she hasnt got a bug of some kind.
Someone with more experiance will be able to help more here, but thats just my advice.

Let us know how you get on.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 11:00 UTC
Thanks for that, she's been wormed, and Vacs are upto date, she doesn't go out much, just a round of our street which she always does, doesn't mix with other dogs either. I will call the vet for advice though.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.05.10 13:13 UTC
it does sound like shes getting ready ,is the sick more of a frofy sick or is it food? ive had girls get the runs 3/4 days before whelping ,dont tend to see much disscharge they keep them selfs very clean and your girl could be doing the same ,so keep close eye sounds like she not be long now ,let us know x
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 14:07 UTC
Yes it is the frothy stuff, the diarrhea is dark brown, but she been nibbling iams puppy? My daughter is due in from school soon, so i'll give her a quick wash down (again), then my daughter can help do her temp. Her vulva is completely tight thought.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.05.10 14:31 UTC
tight still ? that dont sound right is she swollen at all? my girls start to go softer towards the end.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 15:18 UTC
Pretty much unchanged, but she is quite a small breed, should there be a big difference, temp is 99.8.
- By Romside [gb] Date 17.05.10 15:41 UTC
it should be puffy sorry about explanation but no other way to say it,should look bigger than normal and u should notice it as she walks.if her temp is now 99.8 and is normally 99-100 do you mean when she isnt pregnant?or its been this temp in the last few days?
if so id belooking for a drop as low as maybe 97 and sticking to it whelping cannot be far off......if your dates are definately correct....

id have the vet know your waiting,it really could be any time soon now...

good luck.....xxx
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 15:47 UTC
For the last week her temps have been 99.5 ish during the day, then 100 ish in the evening, i think i was more worried about the diarrhea, dates are def correct for mating.
- By Romside [gb] Date 17.05.10 15:57 UTC
dont worry about the loose stools its more than normal,id say you have pups on the way v soon.....make sure she has plenty of water and if your not already just give her some small meals maybe the food is too heavy and isnt able to keep her from bein sick,is she being sick in the morning??cos thats normal as far as my experience goes as well
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 16:00 UTC
Early morning, like 5am, and a bit later on, still am. Thanks for that. She does have a sensitive tummy, is there anything you advise?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.05.10 16:08 UTC
i wouldnt worry about the sick if it frofy ,she may not have much room now ,1 of my girls had diarrhea and sickness 2days before whelp and she was bringing everything up all day and night even water when she tried to drink ,yes it was a bug but was fine when pups came so try not to worry about that ,but dont small breeds whelp early? is this her 1st litter ? i dont breed small breeds so not to sure but from what ive read here they do tend to come early ,keep eye on her and if worried have the vet check her over for peace of mind ,good luck with mum and babbies shouldnt be to long now x
- By Romside [gb] Date 17.05.10 16:39 UTC
Day 64 wasnt it??

like white lilly says i wouldnt worry too much about her having a dicky tummy, its all part of the process....for most!not all...

if your really concerned theres reason why you cant call the vet for a simple check up,make sure everyone is still all ok inside and mum isnt carrying a bug.

feeding wise id give scrambled egg and bolied chicken.shouldnt be too harsh on her tummy but if she doesnt want it its PROBABLY because pups are taking up all the room.....go and get yourself some piece of mind it does the world of good i can promise you that first hand lol.

no doubt the minute you've walked back in through the door the panting will start its normally sods law for me lol

do keep us informed
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 16:54 UTC
I've called vet and breeder, both say to wait until tomorrow, just gave her scrambled egg, she scoffed it, she's not very full looking now, but this is her 2nd litter and she didn't show at all last time, don't have much faith in our vet, last time she was checked on xmas eve, day 62, they reckoned there were no pups, then on day 64 she had four huge pups and and one smaller pup. But she was pawing at the papers in her box a few mins ago, so i think i just have to wait, prob the wee small hours of tomorrow. I do appreciate everyones input, gives a balance. Thanks
- By Romside [gb] Date 17.05.10 17:01 UTC

> prob the wee small hours of tomorrow.

ha famous last words could be sooner than you think, glad you have your breeder to consult with as i usually find the vets are useless with pregnancy.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 17.05.10 17:05 UTC
Oh, before that would be lovely, my hubby will be home soon, but he's a lorry driver so he's up at 3am, prob going out the door as i'm up to my elbows, but that's life. Yes this evening would be great.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 17.05.10 17:42 UTC
LOL does sound like your going to get no sleep tonight :) you can then join my club :( but its all worth it ,good luck keep us posted :) x
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 08:12 UTC
Well, we're still here. Just made her some pasta, she's hungry alright. Haven't done her temp yet as she's basking again.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 08:38 UTC
o well maybe today :) fingers crossed.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:03 UTC
Just did her temp still 99.8. Think she's taking the mick. How your pups White lilly? What breed are they?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:05 UTC
pups doing great now thankyou ,im not aloud to say :(

does your dreed tend to go over ?
x
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:22 UTC
Oh! Is that a rule of this forum? The last time she was just over 1 day late. Breeder thinks it's okay?
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:43 UTC
Just wondering. She has just picked up her toy which she's not looked at all, If this is a phantom, would it last as long, with all the tummy upset, sickness etc?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 10:56 UTC
some phantoms can be as real as the real thing ,if read on here that they even go into whelping and shiver and pant ,did your girl have a scan?
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 12:00 UTC
No. I'm looking for the local sheep farmers number now, got appt for 3.40 at vets. Maybe they can check better.
- By Romside [gb] Date 18.05.10 15:42 UTC
how you get on today?any news??
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 15:56 UTC
Back from vet, they gave her kolin for her tummy, said they can feel something, gave her 'till Thursday then want to xray her.
- By toffeecrisp [gb] Date 18.05.10 16:02 UTC
Did they not offer you a scan for her??
At least you got something for her tum...can you see any movement when she lays down on her side or feel any pups moving if you place your hand on her side?
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 16:11 UTC
They can't do scans, they send you to vet school in Glasgow or Edinburgh for that!:-( Can't see any movement, i thought last week i could feel something push back against my hand but no definition. Her temp is 100.2 this is the highest it's been for 10 days.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 17:20 UTC
im worndering if she is pregnent or maybe just 1 pup? and thats why she hasnt had it yet ,id be very worried by now if it was my girl ,but none of mine have ever gone over their dates ,good luck! why didnt the vet xray today maybe 1 pup isnt anough to start labour off ,just my thoughts.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 17:34 UTC
She said not to worry about it being only one pup. I thought xray wasn't desirable. Like i said i don't have much faith in our vet. I'm currently looking for a farmer to scan her locally.
- By paw0308 [gb] Date 18.05.10 17:51 UTC

- By paw0308 [gb] Date 18.05.10 17:57 UTC
im in kilmarnock but i would defineately be wanting to know either way to be honest anything over 63 days i would be thinking of singleton/no pups? i would take her asap for a scan or x ray or you could risk your bitch and/or pups  xx
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:06 UTC
yes xrays can be a worry but not so much at this stage and you do need to know whats going on with your girl hun x
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:08 UTC
Thanks. I'm waiting for a contact for a sheep scanner, so hopefully tonight or in the morning. Surely there's no health concerns if there are no pups. Terri
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:16 UTC
None if there are none, but lots if there's just one, or if they've died etc.

My girl was 4 days late last November and ended up having two healthy pups.  Last time she had two and was to the exact date.  Two is an extremely small litter for my breed, but seems the norm for my dogs LOL!
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:22 UTC
What are the concerns for one pup litter? There is no discharge at all, no swelling, temp 100.2, going to check again about 8.00. Also last time the vet checked her the day before she was due and said doubtful, she didn't show any signs, but just into day 64 she had four big pups and a smaller one. Breeder said she has seen bitches go to 5 days late?
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:28 UTC
so maybe the norm for your breed to go over ,the danger is that when its a small litter maybe 1 or 2 and the pups want to be born but not enough hormone is releasted in her body for contrations to start so if this happends could are at a very high risk of dieing, now my girl has had a very small litter for her breed (only 3) and she went 5days early ,its not down to mum to deside when pups are born its down to pups, and thats why alot of very small litters are born by c-section x
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:40 UTC
Will my girl become distressed if it's going wrong?
- By Abbeypap [gb] Date 18.05.10 18:44 UTC
If you are in contact with your girls breeder and if they local enough can't you ask them to give her a check over.  Unless she is a exceedingly over weight dog if there is one pup and it is alive then there is a chance they may be able to feel it or them.  Sometimes it just takes a more expeienced hand.

I know people have concerns about singleton pups being born but not all of them are problems.  I've had 3 litters in the past with singletons and never had any issues.  Didn't ever cross my mind to think there was ever going to be a problem either.  Only ever learned about the possible problems after coming onto forums.
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 19:01 UTC
She's about three hour drive, i'll find out if she's working tomorrow. I'm not bothered if she's missed and had a phantom, i think the anticipation period has passed. I don't work just now, so she has my full attention. She had just started looking down alot so maybe she can feel something, when i finish my dinner i'll do temp. Terri
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 19:17 UTC
Temp still 100.2. Does it always go up before? Could vet give something to bring on labor?
- By Nova Date 18.05.10 19:20 UTC
The vet can give something to bring on or increase contractions but that is dangerous if the birth canal is not open and relaxed ready for birth.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 19:45 UTC
ive always found that the temp goes high then drops very low and then goes high just before whelping so maybe your at the high before the drop ? x
- By myboo [gb] Date 18.05.10 20:46 UTC
I found temp taking very unreliable, i was taking it for two weeks. then after advice from the breeder she told me to scrap it. i have a small breed  and her was up and down, and i stopped taking it about a day before she welped, i think some girls are like clockwork and often textbook but ive learnt there all diffrent and she'll be ready when shes ready,
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 18.05.10 20:55 UTC
Thanks to everyone. I hope she goes tonight, just been for a longish walk, not heard back from breeder, but can arrange a scan tomorrow. Terri
- By white lilly [gb] Date 18.05.10 20:59 UTC
good luck for tonight :) and if it dont happen thats hope the scan can give you the answers x
- By myboo [gb] Date 18.05.10 21:33 UTC Edited 19.05.10 08:03 UTC
good luck from me too, hopefully it'll be soon, just to add as well, i have a toy breed and i was always under the impression they came early any time from 58 days usally on 58 -60 days  but she welped on day 63 xx
- By Terrano0 [gb] Date 19.05.10 08:24 UTC Edited 19.05.10 10:09 UTC
No pups yet, although she has been paying attention to her poss swollen vulva. Temp looks like dropping. Now 99.2, last night 100.2.
