pups are 15days old 1 of them is chesty ive been to the vets she's got some AB'S for 5day ,the thing is she isnt putting much weight on ,very small amount from yesterday the other 2 have put on 150g from yesterday she has only put on 50g im making sure she gets the back teats ,now do u think i should top her up but im worried she might choke and then more milk goes to her lungs ,or do u think any weight gian is better then none for the next few days while the AB's kick in ,ive never had this problem before with any litters so i want to do the right thing and not make things worse!
thanks x

So long as you can watch her and make sure that she gets fed it should be okay. The lack of weight gain is due to the fact that she had a problem and was not feeding properly, she should start to improve very quickly once on the antibiotics. She will be a little behind the others now but as long as she gains she will eventually catch up. If worried then try her with a bottle, she should not choke on a bottle, if too much goes down it usually comes back up the nose, then hold her upside down and let it drain out.
Hope this helps.

Just a thought, have you checked her soft pallet to make sure there is not a slit or hole - does milk come down her nose after she has fed?
thanks dogsdinner ,she is the greedy 1 out the litter and did choke abit acouple day ago on mums milk i did run and pick her up and hold her down,is it about 2 days for them to start working?x
no holes nova she was checked at the vets and has never had milk come out thank goddness ,its just been since she started getting chesty x

It usually happens to the greedy ones, she has taken too much milk and it has gone into her lungs.
The antibiotics should begin to work within 24 hours - I would expect to see an improvement. If no improvement then it is back to the vet. If you are worried at all about her, then again back to the vet day or night, pups of this age can improve dramatically quickly and likewise they can deteriorate quickly, so it is a matter of being quick and not leaving it.

also get her heart listened to! I had a "chesty" pup that was behind the others and he had a hole in the heart
o yes dont worry i will be ,do the ab's need to go in the fridge i forgot to ask the vets?
if she dont get better quickly sam i will be ,but he did check her heart today x

Usually if it is a liquid. It should say on the packet that it is in.

It probably is a simple case of the pup taking milk into it's lungs and will recover once the infection is cleared, I only asked about the pallet because chest problems are a common side effect of a cleft pallet because the pup breaths in milk.
thanks nova x
ive looked ,it just says below 25c between 2 and 8c ,im so tired and crnt think straght lol
ive tried ring vet back but no answer :(

In the fridge then. Is it Synulox?
thankyou ,i feel drunk with the lack of sleep :( x

You need to sleep in between watching that the poorly pup has fed, even a couple of hours at a time will be good, get someone to wake you up.

Is everything okay White Lilley?
Its probably the synulox drops you make up from powder. Theres not much they can give very young pups. If it is this, then def in the fridge.
yes thankyou dogsdinner ,going back to vets at 4 tho just for a check up ,AB's are working the girl has put on 270g since yesterday ,ive been putting her on back teat at every feed ,only got 1 1/2 h sleep last night and just had an hour today ,i feel really sick with lack of sleep but its worth it in the end when all is well and weaning starts another week and i should be able to get some sleep :) x
yes it is rocknrose :) lack of sleep dont agree with me lol x

Great news, that is a big weight gain since yesterday, so pleased for you and the pup of course :) Must go and do some work now, have been lazy today, beautiful here.
well just got back from vets ,mum is now running a temp :( but pups are doing great!!! thay have 5times there weight from birth in 2weeks and 2day lol ,dont think i need to be weaning them just yet lol which is very strange for this breed lol

Cor you must have baby hippos with that sort of weight gain I am happy with 2oz a day or so at that age (assuming 2nd to third week).

Gosh this breeding of dogs is not easy is it.
they look like baby hipos brainless ,yes their only 2weeks and 2days old today :)
no its not dogsdinner ,ive yet to have a litter thats text book and not have to pay out at the vets ,some ppl must be very very lucky?
*****up date*****
well pups are doing great theyve had their 1st taste of food today and loved it ,mum still not eat :( not even beef....chicken ....lamb...but will eat liver and kidneys ,now i carnt feed her that all the time so from yesterday i strated mixing her soaked kibble with some tinned puppy meat and blending it ,i have to roll into balls and put in the back of her throt then she will eat it ,shes not been sick from me doing this so i know its not the food making her feel ill ,i find this so strang that some girls dont want to eat and some just carnt get enough! ,
this is her 1st litter and maybe her last?
do you think she would be like this if she was breed from again? or could be shes like this because she went into shock when she had them ,their now 2weeks and 4days old .

Really great new about the pups. Not so good about mum not eating, perhaps once starting to eat she may get over it, sounds like she is being really fussy as she thinks that she is 'special', and she is, with all the attention and the pups.
Can not advise you on whether she would be the same if bred from again, think that I would wait and see how it goes with the pups over the next few weeks. And then re-evalutate.
I was once told that the quality of the mothers milk depends on 2 things. 1. Water for amount 2. Food for quality. My girl ate little but often when she was feeding pups. She drank gallons! We used to cook her chicken fillets every night, but when pups started on 'proper' food, we found she wanted to eat what they were getting, so we just made more...I hope your girly gets her appetite back soon. xx
yes i argree littlegreen shes drank so much milk and has made alot of milk because of how much weight the pups have put on ,but the quality of milk was worring me more and thats why i desided to feed her this way! even tho my vet thinks it wrong, but i dont she is still feeding and takeing very good care of pups and does seem more settled now cus she has food in her tum ,so just have to see now how long i have to do this lol she has never been fussy with her food before but i think she loves all this worry ive had over her lol x
dogsdinner i will do that ,wait and see from now how she will be around food ,thanks x
