Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / weaning pups - some with diahorrea
- By jokelly [gb] Date 12.05.10 06:49 UTC
Me again!  Pups are three and a half weeks now and yesterday had 2 meals of soaked/pureed burns kibble.  I am still topping them up with formula as mum has very little milk and is now not really keen to feed at all!  Have noticed 2 of the little boys have bad tummies this morning - very watery - do I keep them off the food today and try again tomorrow?

How much did you give them? I find they need only a very small taste (about a teaspoonful) once the first day and twice the second day of weaning to allow their tummies to become gently acclimatised to the extra roughage.

Probably a bit too much then, although the big boy with the bad tummy ate very little yesterday but may have had more the day before!

I always offer their porridge first then top up after, either from mum or bottle.   Could be you gave them too much from the bottle, it is trial and error.

I do not use Burns, can only recommend what I use and that is either Pedigree Puppy Porridge or the equivalent from Eukanuba - have not had any problems with either.  Did you mix the food with water or milk, that can make a difference.

It could also be co-incidence that you started their kibble meals, you need to keep an eye on them and if there is not any improvement it is a trip to the vets, as diarrhoea can be debiltating at that age if allowed to continue for long.  Certainly if not improved later today I would pop into the vet.

Should have added that diarrhoea can give puppies bad tummy ache and put them off feeding.   It always needs monitoring.

thank you.  I mixed it with cooled boiled water and some formula.  He has still been the most greedy feeder from mum and keen for his top up from me.  Will keep an eye on him today.

Think I would just mix it with the cooled boiled water and no formula - they are getting their milk from the bottle.

Watch out he goes, if no better by lunch time or seems worse just have a word with the vet.   Sometimes the greedy ones overdo it which causes problems, and then irritates the intestines, so needs sorting.

Just had another thought - they were wormed for the first time yesterday - could that have an effect on their tummies?

I will do a small feed later this morning and watch to see what happens!

Could have, depending which wormer, I use Panacur, but it does not give them watery diarrhoea.   Just watch them, are the others okay?

Was this the first worming?

I used Panacur.  One of the smaller ones also has diahorrea.  All have just fed from mum and seem content so will watch and see.

What can the vet do?  Is it a case of re-hydrating and giving something to sooth the tummy?

Panacur completely scours my pups, so now use Drontal Puppy.  Had a whole litter in the vets on drips after they became dehydrated with diahorrea, so what may work with some pups may not work with others, so it could well be the wormer, I certainly won't use it on my litters again.

It depends on the cause of the diarrhoae - that is why it is best to consult with your vet.   They can give various medications some will line the intestine, others will be antibiotics if they think the cause is bacterial.

I have never had a problem with Panacur and have used it successfully since 1989 (in those days it was just a single dose) now it is for 3 consecutive days, but you have to weigh each puppy and dose accordingly.  Many complain about Panacur, but then it is the most widely used of all wormers (according to my vet anyway), if there was an underlying reason for the diarrhoea then using any wormer at the same time would be enough in a puppy of that age to cause a problem.

I always say if in doubt consult with your vet, especially if you are considering worming them all again today.  It is difficult to say much without seeing them.

My vet gave me enough for one dose yesterday and then again in 3 weeks...............

Was it Panacur liquid?  I thought that the dosage was for 3 consecutive days. How much do the pups weigh and how much did you give each of them?  There is Panacur paste, a little dearer but easier to use, but again they are dosed for 3 consecutive days.

Below is the manufacturers data sheet, scroll down for the dosage for puppies - if the puppies are not fully weaned and not eating from separate bowls I would recommend using a syring for the liquid, that is why the paste is easier.

Sorry dogsdinner - I have to do it for 3 consec days - 1.5ml per pup - it's a liquid.  have spoken to vet who thinks it is likely to be the wormer causing the diahorrea but I am watching them closely.......

Both pups are alert and feeding from mum so I am going to keep a close eye on them.  Just waiting for vet to call as not sure if I should give them the 2nd and 3rd doses if the first has caused the problem!!

Glad you have it in hand, I was worried for you and them!!!!!!!!!

Am sure the vet will put you on the right track.

Best of luck, let us know how they continue to get on.

Going to have a few days off the wormer to see what happens and I think I will keep those 2 pups off the food to give them a chance to settle down!

This has been a very steep learning curve for me and it's great having experienced people on hand for advice.  Thank-you!!
