Topic Dog Boards / Health / Urgent: Swollen teats
- By PetePete [au] Date 09.12.02 12:03 UTC
Hi please could anyone advice on a problem my 8 yr dog is having.
Her teats are quite swollen and she is constantly licking them therefore
aggravating the situation.
She has not had any babies and has not mated before. This situation has been encountered previously and the vet told us it called "fake pregnancy" cause she is not desexed.

She is also constantly whining and we do not know if she is in pain or
discomfort.
We cannot take her to the vet immediatly as they're closed, if anyone has
any suggestions please advice.
Would be greatly appreciated, urgent please.

It may be a phantom pregnancy and they can get mastitis with this. Try warm and cool cloths alternatly on her teats (Not v. hot or v. cold) Alto put a tee-shirt or something on her to stop her getting at them then she may also need anti-biotics if the teats are at all red or tight.

If you do think it is a phantom then try halving her food and water for a few days.

Vets should provide 24 hour cover so if you are concerned that she is in pain then ring them now!

sounds like a phantom pregnancy if you give her Pulsatilla three times a day this should help her.
