Leave the bitch to it -she knows best!

Smear a tiny bit of butter on each ones butt..she'll soon start licking them - assuming, of course -she's not doing it anyway.

In the first days after birth bitches often need to be forced to go to the toilet, this is normal.

Also the first day or two some are not very efficient with the toileting,b but soon get the hang of it.

If you find nay dirty bottoms just use unscented wet wipes until Mum is better at it, which she ill in a day or so.

My Lexi was quite discgusted at ahving to clean bums with her first litter, refusing point blank the first day.

My Clover was the same - hated doing it (you could tll from her expression) but knew instinctively that it had to be done. She was enormously relieved when weaning time came and it meant she didn't have to do it any more!

Most of my pug girls can't stand doing it either, in fact although 1 or 2 make feeble attempts none of them acutally do a full clean up job, so I have to add "top and tailing" into the days puppy schedules, just a dish of warm water, some cotton wool pads (lots of them) and clean, dry towel.  Only takes a few mins about 3 times a day.  If you have a bitch who is dead set on not cleaning much better, in my opinion, to jsut step in and do it, rather than allowing dirty, sore bottoms to develop.

She is probably doing it. I have only ever seen mine do it on occasion but they had lovely clean bums and there was no mess in the box so it was being done, just not when I was watching.

Same as rocknrose, I never see any sign of poo on the vetbed.  The bitches seem to keep them clean, just not when I'm watching!
