What can you do to a long haired GSD's trousers to thin them down slightly in the summer? Ive not had a long haired dog for so long Im at a loss.
What do you do?

I don't thin my males trousers down but if I wanted to I would use a Mars Coat King - places like Dezynadog sell them & would be able to advise which version to buy.

I see this question is under showing so I wouldn't want to suggest anything that might ruin the coat but here's what works for my mongrel...

... a Mars Coat King is too 'hard' for bony areas without some fat covering, and it doesn't actually work without a little pressure, or purchase.  I use thinning scissors (yes, sooo not a show dog :) ) and a bit of hand stripping to keep his hairy trousers under control.  However, I do show my wire haired vizsla and I hand strip his legs too, from time to time.

Why would you want to thin them out? Long hair protects both from cold and heat. Nature will do its bit and few animals will have their fullest coat in summer anyway.

There is no need to thin GSD's trousers - it's an all-weather working coat.  Brush with a slicker then go through with a wide toothed comb and he'll be well ventilated for the summer. :)

Thanks for all your replies. I am fairly new to this forum and guess Ive made a mistake by putting it under showing.
I dont intend showing my dogs and this one is long haired anyway.
I thought you shouldnt touch them and do know hair insulates from heat as well as cold but wanted to make sure. They are very bushy and get tuggy even though we groom him daily. Im always worried about what may be lurking in that forest!
Well your answers have decided the issue for me. I will leave well alone but if I feel the circumstances merit it, will use thinning scisors and rake it through.
Thanks v much

I use thinning scissors on Goldie trousers, just one or two snips and then comb through, then repeat, so you can be sure you are leaving it natural looking but a bit tidier. An undercoat rake is useful over the whole coat on a GSD at this time of year to help with the shedding. :-)
