I have a weim puppy at the mo and was just wondering how often you peeps with short haired dogs wash them please? Also what do you use?

Many thanks

Thanks. Is there any particular brand that you recommend?

they all have different needs. I have some that are very sensitive and so i use a prescription sshampoo, the others tend to have one of doreen paiges special offers!

Unless they get very dirty, my Dobes get a bath once in a blue moon. I certainly don't need to do it very often, maybe 2 or 3 times a year.

I have dalmatians (well, only one at the moment, but at one stage I had 5) and very rarely bathed them. In fact the one I have now, who 10½ years old, has only had 2 baths in his life!

The show ones used to get bathed more often, but bathing ruins the waterproofing and dirt-repelling properties of the coat so is best avoided if at all possible.

Bout 3/4 times a year depends if they have rolled in something or there is a champ show

I've got 5 RRs and don't bath them as a matter of course. They get a rub over with a hot, damp towel to clean up their coats if we are going to a show, or just to spruce them up. They only get a wash if they've rolled in something revolting.

I only do mine when they need it.  I did four of my girls outsdie yesterday as it was such a hot day.  after grooming I tend to go over with baby wipes that takes off the surface dirt.  But brushing normally keeps the coat clean.

Likewise, when they get too houndy. Tadog, where was it hot yesterday?

My brother has a Weim :)

She gets a damp, soft rubber brush all over then a wipe over with a velvet glove.

The rubber brush gets loads out of the coat - loose hair, dander, dirt  and the velvet glove smooths the coat.

She's almost 10 now and has had about 2 baths in her life, both after being out working and getting really stinky :)

When she was bathed, they just used Johnson's baby shampoo diluted in a jug, worked throught the coat and then rinsed out well.

A puppy probably won't need much more than a damp flannel - even poo can be shifted quite well without a bath :)

...although, as you can see, the answer to your question depends on where you live, and the type of mud hunter you have - some dogs spend their lives looking like bog babies!!

Although there are exceptions, the average pet dog should rarely need a bath.   Very muddy bits can simply be rinsed off with clean water after a walk.  Regular brushing will do more to keep your dogs coat looking good.   My 7 yr old mongrel has only ever had the full shampoo once - when he'd been playing in a farmyard and got oil on him, but even then I tried a topical application first.

Thanks everyone. I didn't really think she needed bathing much (just something I read somewhere I think) and my old weim probably only ever had about 2 baths in her life too. I just sometimes think she smells a bit doggy which I find unusual for a young pup (my old weim smelt fine for years but possibly a bit more doggy towards the end).
Thanks again

Lacy, it was hot in north east scotland on Friday.  It has been good here since.

Thinking about it, my own dogs don't really have a smell, but on the few times they have smelled a bit 'doggy' it has been down to their food ;)   A change of food and they smelled lovely again :)   Bedlingtons are known for not having a strong smell ;)

Blimy you lot my cocker does the cow pat slide regulalrly and gets bathed when needed. The BC is better apart from the fox pooh ruff!! and gets bathed then and when he gets too doggie. But I would not bath to order just to smell. I can guarrantee when the groomer is due for the CS he finds something nasty to roll in about 48 hours earlier!! nexessitating a bath. We use a tea tree oil and pantene for the cocker and a black coat Pets at Home for the BC. No problems.

I must admit OH always walks to work along a river (Itchen) and if they are to bad in the summer they either jump or get chucked in.

Ours swim for pure pleasure usually and JAke (BC) takes his "fetch" in and dunks it when his spit makes it too slippery... arent they wonderful ;-P ;-P

I bath mine when stinking or rolled in something, use Dirtie Beastie Shampoo on the Danes, and Groomer shampoo on the Terriers, the danes are usally wiped over with a warm damp towel before shows.

Mine have never had them that often particularily the sheltie, a wipe down maybe and well baby wipes help if there is ever any poo in the fur lol
- By suejaw Date 14.05.10 22:50 UTC
Mine get a bath before any champ show and also if they roll in anything yukky or start to get a doggie smell to them.
Open shows and fun shows they get a wipe down.
