Topic Dog Boards / Health / help urgent advise needed - bin raided
- By muddydogs [gb] Date 08.12.02 19:10 UTC
cookie and decoy have just carried out a stealth raid on the bin, and in absolutely silence eaten a whole cooked chicken carcass (which was wrapped in three carrier bags) between them, whilst we were eating our evening meal! should it pass through ok, I'm really worried about the cooked bones - or should I make them both sick? what is best to use if I need to make them sick it up? Julie:)

Hi Julie,
Daddy's little angel :) not part of this raid? :D

I panicked when Toby ate some cooked chicken bones but he was alright. He was a bit soft but I gave him some live yoghurt and all was OK. I know he's smaller and it was only 1-2 KFC pieces he ate but maybe if the bones are soft enough they'll have crunched them up rather than left them with sharp splinters.

I hope somebody experienced can advise you but I imagine you'd need to just watch for a couple of days. At least I'm thinking that if the bones haven't done any harm going down would they maybe do harm on the way back up if you made them sick?

Of course he wasn't dot! thanks for your speedy reply - have rang the vet, who did think making him sick would possible cause more harm! told me to bulk them out with bran or fibregel and let them pass them naturally! Phew panick over - I hope! Julie:)

Hi Julie
Glad you phoned the vet. I was worried I was wrong  I'll need to remember about the bran.

Dont want to worry you but I lost my lovely Basset hound 2 weeks ago through her eating a cooked chicken carcass she got from the bin.She ate it about 10 am was fine until she was sick about 10pm but in the morning she was obviously unwell and was at the vets by 9. They kept her in on a drip with antibiotic cover and hope it would pass through, an x-ray showed no obstuction. At noon no change at 4pm no change then at 7 they had to operate a she was passing blood and she died in the operating table due to perforated bowel and peritonitus. Only 41/2 years old.
My advice would be watch like a hawk and if any discomfort noticed take straight to the vet.
I really hope your dog gets away with it and ok.

Oh Ted, I am so very sorry. I really feel for you and I will make sure my beagle does not get hold of anything like that.

You were very brave to post this as it must have been very painful for you but you had other dogs interests at heart.

with respect and sympathy for you

Thank you ted for your post - I have only just logged one again since my last one last night - so sorry to hear about your poor<edited to basset hound> (Im so sorry for the error, ted :(- I'm still panicky I'm afraid) thankyou for your warning. it must have been hard to post:(
Decoy is fine - it seems to have given him the trots (I don't think he got much), Cookie started being sick at about 9 pm and was sick again (huge - everything came up) at about 11.30pm. I was so worried, I am hoping he has brought it all up and that is an end to it - I really wouldn't have fed them today, but as the vet said to bulk them out, I've just fed all the dogs - and also if he is fed again, he will poo more or less straight away - so, Im now going to post myself at the window (they won't poo out the back if I go out with them) and watch like a hawk! Blimey - I'm so careful with cooked bones, I wrap them several times and put them way down in the bin - they raided in silence , the kitchen is next to the dining room, and we didn't hear a thing - they didn't knock the bin over - its one of those self closing tall ones too! he must of push the lid down and lent right in - nothing else was touched or pulled out! I'm going to have to take them outside in future straight away to the bin bag shed - especially constructed to stop the dogs getting to the rubbish bags!! Im in for a worry wart day now:( Julie:(

My first Dobe did this with the turkey one Christmas so I gave her a loaf of bread and a pint of milk to try to pad it out. Was lucky and had no problems.

Hope yours are okay

thank you everyone for your kind concern:) both are doing fine, both have poo'd - Decoy lots of runs:( and Cookie has solid poo but has been a few times - I hope this means that all is well - How long does it take for what has been consumed to competely pass through the system? does anyone know? I'm gonna be so worried till it has all passed - I'm not walking them today, in case vigorous exercise can cause any bones that may be a bit sharp to do some damage - does that sound sensible or am I over-reacting? If its not one thing its another:( Julie:(

Hi Julie,
Glad it sounds as if things are OK. If you give Decoy a spoonful of live yoghurt that should clear up the runs.
I don't know how long it would take to fully pass through their system but if it was me I would probably relax a bit after 48 hours.

The loaf of bead and milk sounds a good idea, I wish I had done that.

Hi Julie -how are the mystic marauders today ? everything in order? :)

Hi Liz - yes thanks - both have the chronic trots - but I've been stuffing them full of food (bulking out the bones) they aren't passing anymore bits of bone - so am going to skip a feed tonight (they get fed twice a day - cookie three times still) I am hoping we've been lucky - it wont happen again - ever! I'll put the carcasses straight out next time!
I took them out today for a freezing run on the beach - it beats me how they can all still plunge into the sea!! It must be sub-zero temperatures! - the funny thing is Mauser (working cocker) swims in the sea or stream and gets soaking , he will roll in puddles if thats all that available and be fine - if I give him a nice warm bath and blow dry him, he sits there looking really hard done by shivering for hours after  He didn't take part in the raid (cos he was too busy sitting under 'daddy's' chair waiting for 'daddy' to pop some tasty chicken breast into his mouth  ) Thanks for asking after them! Julie:)

Oh Ted, please don't feel bad about what happened to your girl. I doubt very much you could have prevented what happened and going over it all with lots of 'if onlys' and 'what ifs' won't do you any good at all - in fact it's more than likely going to make you ill.
