I have a male lab, I am trying to get them to breed but everytime my female goes into season, my male doesn't even care. Is there any particular reason for this behavior.

When during the season are you trying to get them to mate? The males usually won't be interested in the female and vice versa, till she's ready to be mated, which for Labradors is about day 11-13 after she starts her season.

I had a Samoyed like that, whenever the two mal girls were in season he wouldn't go near them for the whole three weeks!:D I asked about this and was told that in a very few circumstances males were not interested in mating the females they lived with. He was certainly interested in other females. I have to admit I was very happy in his case as it saved me a lot of hassle as I definitely did not want Sammymutes and considered myself very very lucky ;)
As you want to breed, I hope that he will respond to the situation soon, but I am sure that he is not gay. Apparently that privilege is saved for the human race alone (or so I have been told).

You could try seperating them for a couple of days where they don't see eachother. My male did that. I tried bathing her too see, and then I had my husband take my bitch to the shop with him for the day, and well my dog bred her when they got back. Don't know if that had anything to do with it, but it worked.
ttfn :)

you must of missed the documentory proving animals could be gay, it was proven and also followed by theire offspring-in the genes!

Linda, didn't see that one, but I do think that problem whelpings and particularly poor maternal behaviour can be passed on. If lack of enthusism for stud work is inherited I wonder if there will be problems in the US and other countries where AI is common.

it showed several different breeds of obvious gay animals---faced with in season females not bothered in the slightest--but let them in with other males and they where at it----they did tests with goats, showing the gay ones let in amongst females ready and males, they mated the males-everytime, despite the females standing etc, --they did the same tests on the progeny of relatives to the gay lot, some of those where the same---have to tell you that it didnt half make the eyes pop out on the unexpecting non gay recipents

Not sure what the . was ment to signify in the last post but I take your point Sharon. If the only way a good dog will sire is by AI and if he is well used that way and if he passes on that trait then it would not look good for the future of the breed! I've never been too happy with the whole aspect of AI and thinking of it this way I'm even less happy.

Hi, I had the same sort of problem recently with my male, didn't want anything to do with either of my females. So I gave him two herbal supplements and had someone else who wanted to se him bring their bitch along when she was ready.
And the enthusiasm he showed was amazing, although he is nearly two and never been used before. I did have to get him started manually and he then took over, and we had two matings both with about 5 min ties.

Not sure whether the supplements did work, or whether it was just suddenly the right time for him, but I do think they had somehting to do with it.

If you want to know more please e-mail me and i'll let you know what to get and where to get them.

All the best for now
