Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Would you export a 12 wk pup with one testicle undescended?
- By sam Date 05.05.10 16:43 UTC
A male puppy being exported for show/breeding. However at time of flying, only one testicle dropped (12 weeks). This is fairly normal in the breed but still a worry. Buyer still wants to take him and take chance it will drop later. Would you risk your reputation as a breeder who only exports the very best puppies, or would you be adamant that he cant go? Thoughts please??

If its  not abnormal in the breed I would still send the dog, maybe suggest if it doesn't drop you will refund part of the money, or have him back? I know its difficult to do if he's being exported

Could you not hold off until he's a little older to see if it will drop?

Could the puppy be scanned to find out where the testicle is?
No guarantee it will drop of course, but at least if it is there and in the right position (as opposed to hiding in the abdomen somewhere!) then that's at least a reasonable precaution?

A difficult one, how unusual is it for a pup of the breed to have retained one or both at 12 weeks, if it is relatively common would it damage your reputation if you let him go.

Normally it would not be thought a problem but once exported it is not that easy to offer a replacement - not much help my thinking out aloud.

Think if it is not that un-common and the purchaser is willing to take the risk then I think perhaps you should go ahead unless it is easy to delay the transfer for a month or so and even then you may still be faced with the same situation.

I'd be adamant that he couldn't go, I'm afraid. If he was a pet puppy it would no doubt drop later no problem, it's the one that's gone half way round the world that would be the one that wouldn't!

I would say that I would be able to hold onto the pup for an agreed time to see if it drops. I would not send if it did not have both down as you would not be able to show or breed and it could be hereditory.

if it was me i wouldnt send till it had dropped, what if it didnt drop ,its a lot of trouble to send him back and thats if they would send him back ,so if this pup wasnt any good to them what would they do with him ? rehome ? i wouldnt be able to rest ,id be worried sick.

The usual rule is only to export the very best, for your own reputation and that of the country (all the experts in the receiving country can only evaluate what they get to see in front of them).

Hi Sam,

Can you actually feel the other one, is it there?

I had one last year at 12 weeks that sat higher but it did come down. I could feel it though and I could work it down.

This was my initial thought about the situation.  If the pup is actually required for showing, will he be surpus to requirements if the testicle is retained?

I too would be worried about how he would end up if they just wanted to get shot of him.

"getting shot" isnt in the equation and not relevant to my original question. the other one is there but not dropped (it can be felt ok)

Sam if you can feel it I would not expect it to return from whence it came - do you have a tame vet who will give an honest opinion of if this boy will be complete and the % chance of him retaining that missing gem.

No.   To answer the question.

Which question?
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 06.05.10 08:11 UTC
The one in the title of the thread, presumably.

Yes, I was confused because the post asks of thoughts but I can see the title is a question. And a no to the title is opposite to a no to the post.
