Once there is any sign of green, it is usually as they detach from the placenta.

I would never let a girl go long after this sign, as I wouldn't want to lose the pups by leaving her too long.
- By myboo [gb] Date 05.05.10 11:06 UTC
well after whats seemed a very long time the puppies arrived at 8pm last night, it was so quick no signs of anything at all she just came and sat on my knee all shivering and her contractions started they started at about 6;15 then by eight oclock all three puppies were born mums doing really well, we had to open the sacs and cut the cords and i thought she wasnt going to take to them but after a few tries she soon settled with them, and can i take them away from her??? no chance she will bark and bark at me, then try and take it away in her mouth, shes doing very well, shes doing alot of crying and will bearly leave them to go to the toilet, but after speaking with the breeder and the vet she assured me this is fine, we have a healthy girl and boy and a very tiny little boy half the size of the others who wont suckle, kept trying last night then finally tried the syringe he wouldnt open his mouth, so i had to open it and drop i in, still not looking very good, i decided to leave him with  mum over night to see how he would get on. and after what seems like no sleep hes still here, 6 oclock this morning i tried him again and after he got a taste for the supplement milk he got the idea, we put him on mum and he started suckling, still very worried about him, but mums licking and cleaning him, and shes not yet pushed him aside, so i think hes got a chance, i think mum might of retained two placentas or shes eaten them while we was busy with the pups, but we going to the vets for the full check up and try and see if theres anything left over, ill let you all know how we get on xx

- By LucyDogs [gb] Date 05.05.10 12:39 UTC
Well done! Just keep latching the little one onto the back teats whenever you can, and don't worry too much as long as he is gaining weight daily. :-)
- By LittleGreen [gb] Date 05.05.10 21:51 UTC
Congratulations! Good luck with the little one. How's Mum doing?
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 07:41 UTC
shes doing really well, we went to the vets yesterday and he checked her and said he dosnt think shes reatained any placentas so he wont give her the injection, very worried about the little one, tried hand feeding him and he wont suckle, i keep trying and trying, partners tried and tried, surprised hes made it this far, wont latch on to mum even though he appears to be rooting, ive kept trying to put him on. turning her around on other side to try other teats he still wont do it weighed him and hes gone from 80g to 79g, im losing hope with this one, mum keeps picking him up in her mouth,, she dosnt do this to the other ones, woke up  this morning and she had him in her mouth just sat there with him and crying,
very upset, i was hoping if he made it i was going to keep him, i dont know what else to do, the vets face said alot to me to when he saw him, he said just try your best but things like this do happen, so that didnt give me much confidence, what else can i do,
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 07:57 UTC
Sorry to hear that you are struggling with your little one.   As the vet says sometimes it happens.   The hardest part is getting him to latch on, does he open his mouth to latch on to mum or the bottle, if not you have to gently open his mouth for him and again gently try and express some milk.   Very difficult I know and also very frustating.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 06.05.10 08:22 UTC
all you can do is keep tryin to drink ,have you tryed a dropper with some milk in it ,but mums know when things are right :( ,and this pup could stress her out if she knows things not good with him :( ,if you carnt get any milk in at all and mum still is acting stressed ,if it was me i would put this poor boy out of his suffering ,ive had to do it before and its heart breaking but the kindst thing in the end ,but try the dropper 1st ,he could turn a corner ,.....healing thoughts your way ((hugs)) x
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 10:08 UTC
thanks everyone. just spoken to the breeder, and she told me want i didnt want to hear but only the truth, she told me to also try him with a dropper i have tried him with the syringe opening his mouth but its like hes dosnt want to drink if you know what i mean, she told me he proberley wouldnt last much longer now, and mum does seem upset by him,hes with the others right now, im going to try again with some feed, he seems like hes getting weeker, im going to go and try again now, ill let you know how he gets on :(
- By LittleGreen [gb] Date 06.05.10 11:15 UTC
Don't give up....we dropper fed 2 puppies for 3 days...sadly we lost one, but on day 3 the little girl (6oz at birth) started to suckle from mum & she's now a happy healthy 2 year old. Good luck xx
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:07 UTC
tried him a while ago. and i was so careful i managed to get him to open his mouth and dropped the tiniest bit into his mouth he closed his mouth. and opened it again i thought we was getting some where after a few more trys and thought he was actually sucking i was putting a little bit in a time. i was watching the drops go into his mouth, then all of a sudden milk started coming out of his nose in bubbles i tipped him upside down for it to come out. i acted on instict ive been told this is what you do also. he seemed fine. tried again but wasnt intrested this time. all the time i was doing this mum was mithering and mithering me barking at me so i sat on the floor so she could see what i was doing she started licking him then tried picking him up by his head, i came to the conclusion he wasnt going to drink,so i lay him with the others i put him down on his belly and mum picked him up again and tried carrying him off places i took him of her and put him down she picked him up again and sat with him in her mouth again. i again took him of her and lay him next to the others, came back upstairs 5 mins later he was lay on his side the others were on the bellies huddled up together, been upstairs about half an hour ago and he was lay with the others i dont know if hes got there himeself.
i dont know what to do now. my breeder says just leave him with mum if you cant get anywhere.
i really dont think i could bring myself to put him down, but this is selfish of me. he seems quiet now. i looked at a birth chart and it says he would just weigh over a 1lb fully grown. this is not normal the others say over 4lb which is about right as my girls 4.8lbs there dad was smaller. so it works out about right
im devastated i feel helpless, and useless.
- By Tanya1989 [ir] Date 06.05.10 13:14 UTC
Has he been checked for cleft palate? This is quite often the case when milk comes down the nose? :-(
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:38 UTC
yes the vet checked them all yesterday and he said no cleft palates. but thank you for replying x
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:38 UTC
Is he fighting or is he limp?  If they start fading they usually make a crying noise like a seagull and go limp, there can be many causes for this from infection to just having been chilled.   Did the vet give him anything i.e. antibiotics?

Sometimes even when you have done everything possible they fade.
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:47 UTC
well when he was lay on is side he was making crying noises as youve described and was fairly limp but just been up and checked him again and hes huddled with the others
no the vet didnt metion anything about infection he said hes just very small and just try your best with him, the receptionist also owns my breed of dogs said to me its devastating isnt it, and i was like eh?, i thought he might of had a chance!! but i looked at the vet and like i said his face said it all, ill keep trying with him, ive stayed downstairs most of the day. mum seems more calmer and relaxed when shes on her  own and i dont intervene shes surprised me as she's always been such a softy a fusspot brilliant temprement and always at my side, but she seems happier on her own , it dosnt help we have a four year old son but hes been as good as gold,
ill just keep trying thats all i can do i surpose,  but again thank you everyone for your help. x
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:52 UTC
It is very hard when they are like that knowing what to do for the best.   If it is fading puppy syndrome antibiotics can sometimes help, you could possibly ask your vet as he seems to have changed since he looked at him yesterday.   Other than that the only thing you can do is keep trying as you are at the moment.   Did he take any milk at all from the syringe, or did it all come back down his nose?

Wish you luck
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 13:56 UTC
Meant to add it sounds as though he is a small breed, and if so he would not need a great deal of milk.

Does his breeder live from you and if she is fairly close could she pop out and have a look?
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:03 UTC
well he seemed like he was taking a good few drops but then again they was very very small drops i was willing to sit there all day if needed be, but i think most of it came out of his nose
if it is fading puppy syndrome the vet didnt say anything, but if it is  fps shouldnt i remove it from the rest of the litter just incase i always thought fps was contagious
the other puppies seem to be doing well  yesterday girl 116 g  boy 117g  today both are at 126g and seem to be doing well, and they are very very greedy,
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:09 UTC
he is very small, dogs dinner he weighed in yesterday at 80g then about 78-79g i have spoken to the breeder and shes told me what everyone else has, but shes been more blunt with me,
she told me it often does happen more than we'd like,. but you have to healthy puupies there and for a dog of my girls size 2 is a good size litter for her.
he just seems so helpless and i feel like i should be trying more and doing more, but i cant if he wont let me this is so frustrating :(
- By white lilly [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:16 UTC
1 of mine had fps ,i didnt remove from rest of litter ,i did have to pts at a week old she fadded over night and was gasping for air i couldnt see her suffer any longer ,i had to dropper feed her from day 2 ,xx

all other litter mates where fine no problems at all x
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:20 UTC
You are doing your best you must not feel bad about that.

FPS can have different causes, it can be caused by infection, or an underlying health issue, or just getting chilled which could happen just by being pushed out and it would not take long to chill a puppy of that size.   I would not necessarily remove him from the others, but if your breeder seems to think that it happens fairly often in your breed and that 2 puppies is a good size litter I am sure she knows what she is talking about.

Wish I could be more help.
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:25 UTC
sorry to here about your little one white lilly,i would have said to you you did right thing. but but now im actually going threw it myself i just couldnt bare the thought of it.. well not yet, am i indenile? i feel like im not doing enough!!  ill keep trying ill speak to my partner tonight see what he thinks and ill keep trying a while longer. if he carrys on ill ring the vet and see what they say.
i thought i had been quite strong about the whole situation. not gotten to attached and thought natures nature you can only try your best, but when my partner ask me what shall we do if he dies, i said id find a little box a nice blanket wrap him up with a little teddy and bury him in the garden with a little prayer, and this completley upset me as i was talking just broke down,
i dont think id feel as useless if he was at least trying a bit,
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:32 UTC
thanks dogs dinner well she told me her bitch had a c-section a couple of weeks ago and the vet said you have two and half puppies. meaning a very little one. she said she tried everything but after two days he just faded away,
he was the last one to come out i didnt actually think there was anymore as the first two came out within minutes of each other but he was maybe 5-10 mintues later and the first two latched on straight away but he wouldnt at all.
i wont remove him from them. ill let him stay with them and his mum.. mum still seems relaxed and calm. my partner will be back in an hour, and ill know he'll want to keep trying hes gotten attched to him, xxx
- By dogsdinner [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:38 UTC

- By white lilly [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:39 UTC
myboo your doing all you can (((hugs))) it broke my heart and lack of sleep dont help :( ,we get atached the min their born ,we just carnt deal with death very well i think ,i have a bridge made from wood in my garden and we have 6 puppies burried there ,i have a gardian angel at the end of the bridge ,she looks after my girls babies that never made it, its just my way of coping with it, nature is beautiful but so very crul at the same time ,i think its the best thing to talk with your hubby and your vet and see what the vet says mybe just try some AB's you never know (((hugs))) xx
i wish i could help more too x
- By myboo [gb] Date 06.05.10 14:56 UTC

- By myboo [gb] Date 07.05.10 10:52 UTC
hello everyone i would just like to thank you all for all your help & advice, and to the ones even just sending your love it really has ment alot,

the puppy seemed very weak last night, i went upstairs and he was on the outside of mum, the other two were feeding, i just looked at him and thought,
right! thats it im taking him away, were going to try and hand raise him ourselfs, we brought him downstairs in a towel and my partner sat with him in the chair stroking him while i made up his feed, my partner tried him with the syringe, no luck! we made up another fresh milk in the bottle still no luck and hour later we tried forcing him opeing his mouth gentley, rubbing the teat on the roof of his mouth he still didnt want to know, an hour later i tried, same routine, but no luck, i had him held to my chest in the towel and he found the strengh to climb out of the towel and onto my chest and was happy near my hair ( must of reminded him of mum). i left him there for a while with the towel over his body, and hour later we tried again same rountine but tried finger feeding (putting the milk on my finger) still no luck with him,
me and my partner sort of just new he spent some time with him cuddling and stroking him and i did the same, we decided to take him back to mum, we put him huddled in with the rest mum licked him and mum pushed him in further with her nose,
i checked on him before i went to bed and he was were we put him...
my partner woke me up at 6:30 this morning with the sad news
he was finally at rest, my partner took him away with him so i couldnt see, i asked how he was and he was lay on his side, he just looked sound asleep he said.
devasted isnt the word. you feel stupid for being so upset about something that was there for such a short time who had no personalitie who wasnt even aware of him self.
but i cant help but think what could of been what type of life he would of had,  you hear of puppies dieing all the time, its nature! but you cant help but feel guilt and sadness wondering what you could of done to prevent it, and wondering what was the point in him being there for just two days, if it was ment to be then why wasnt he just absorbed why let him suffer for two days!
could i of done more??
this was my first litter  and i wont be in too much of a hurry to do it again, seeing the other two puppies happy and warm and mum now content it makes it all worth it.
we will bury him tonight i couldnt bring myself to do it alone, and i know my partner would want to be there too,
thank you all again for all your help. xxxxxxx

goodnight little man xx
