Topic Dog Boards / General / What to put in kennel?
- By JackieG [gb] Date 01.05.10 13:20 UTC
I have fab kennels and runs, and my dogs go happily in them when I need them to. (not often really) However, one of my dogs drags everything out of her kennel and rips it up. (even vet bed) She ends up with no bedding in the kennel. Any suggestions?

Suggestion? Yes!  You cannot beat a cow mat!!  They can be clawed but takes some gouging, they are warm to lie on and good for young or old bones, shock absorbing!  My friend has a couple of dogs that shred bedding, she has cut cow mats to fit in all her dogs kennels/crates now.  Those that shred don't get bedding, those that do get bedding, though they're warm to lie on, even with no bedding in.

You can get them from farm supplies. They're warm to the touch, can hose them down, have a non-slip surface, easy to cut with a stanley knife. In fact I'm so sold on them I've got a piece to go in my!

I think they're around £35 for a 6' x 4' piece.

What about chewing?  We used stable mats for our labs & he pretty much turned them into shredded rubber.  Would love to be able to find something for our kennels but he's just a little horror!  We now have a very expensive Canine Kennels raised bed that the worst he can do is cock his leg up - and he does :-(

I use straw. Cheap, isn't eaten, cannot be chewed, and makes a nice, soft bed. None of my big dogs can have bedding of any type as it's always chewed up or peed on.

Is this the stuff? http://www.intershape.com/mattresses.htm?gclid=CKj8pa-JsaECFSU8lAodHBElAg

I thought about straw but was told it isn't suitable for dogs. Maybe they meant hay?
Where do you get your straw from?
I do worry that she would drag straw/shredded paper out and scatter it everywhere...

We get a bit of straw dragged out but not much at all. Shredded paper would be worse. I just get it from a local farmer. Have used it for a few years now.

We've not had a problem with chewing ... these I think are thicker than standard stable mats.  The chewing dogs just haven't been able to get at the edges :-)

JackieG, Not sure about the intershape mats, I've only ever come across the Mayo Mats. They don't look the same in the picture, and not sure about the latex construction.  This site gives you a better description and picture http://www.cowcomfort.co.uk/ They're normally referred to as the Cow Comfort Mayo Mat. They're 1" thick.

Anyway, a suggestion that seems to work for my friend.

Great, thanks :)

You do have to think about the dogs colour, straw when used for my breed will stain their coats which should be clear grey and give a yellow cast, definitely not desirable.

How can straw stain if it's dry?
- By Brainless [gb] Date 01.05.10 17:21 UTC
Because it invariably gets wet.
