Hi All
just wondering if bitches smell different to male dogs when their pregnant? My girl is 4weeks today from last mating and my neutered male is paying her more attention than normal. Over the last few days every time she passes him he has a smell of her. She is finding this uncomfortable and puts her tail down, then sits till he walks away. Is this a sign that he knows somthing i dont yet, she has her scan on Tuesday. Although we have had a few signs from her ourselfs, not eating, clear discharge and nipples are larger and pinker. i dont want to get my hope's up to high at the moment lol. Any advice would be great thanks Scarlet

Not being a dog I do not know for sure but would think that both dogs and bitches would know when another is in whelp or sick or any number of other conditions.

I think so yes, but I'm no expert!
Hi Scarlet...my girl was mated just over 4 weeks ago too, but scan says no puppies. We've also had the clear discharge, not eating etc. My older girl waits till Rosie has had a wee, then sniffs it & wee's in the same place, much the same as a male would do when a bitch is in season. She's always got her nose stuck up Rosie's rear end too :( I think girls hold on to 'that smell' for a while whether they are mated or not. Probably not what you want to hear, but I wish you all the luck in the world for your scan xx L.G.

Going on my own experience, I think they must smell different because one of my bitches has just had her pups and for weeks beforehand we had males trying to mount her sister and her mom moreso than her (but I did keep her away from other dogs as much as poss), but this was going on before we knew she was pregnant. Her scent was obviously on the others as they all tend to sleep together.
Having said that it was younger males who were more interested, as opposed to a couple of older stud dogs that belong to friends, that we met at a show we were at with her sister, and they weren't bothered. :)

Yes, and ones that don't know about bitches and seasons can find them a bit interesting.
More worryingly dogs find the smell of infection very interesting, so that needs to be ruled out also.

Thanks for all the advice i guess i will just have to wait and see on Tuesday lol.
My male dog does not pay her this much attention when she's in season!! He was nueterd at 6 months old so i dont even think he knows he's male, he has never tried to mount her even when in season this is the most attention he has ever given her, tbh that was why i posted about it as its so unusual for him.

Brainless
She was at the vets Friday because of her not eating he gave her a full examination and said she was fine, but i guess you can't tell if she has an infection this way but her temp was normal. She is well in herself still wants to go out for walks still drinking even if she's not eating very much. Do you think i should take her back before Tuesday and have her checked again just in case?
I have just had the same thing happening with my girl. She is 5 weeks this friday and obviously pregnant now but for the last 3 weeks or so my boy has been more interested in her than is usual. I asked around and most people said it is a good sign. Good luck with the scan and i hope its good news !

If the vet has seen her and there is no discharge other than clear then it is your boys inexperience/immaturity about her smelling different.
The fact he has been neutered puts him in the category of not knowing what is what just that it is different to normal.
