Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / bitch not stimulating pups

my girl's pups are 16 days old, i worried as i have not seen them do a poo. I havnt seen her lick their bums, but have seen her stimulate them to do wee's. I have tried putting some honey on their bums, she licked it off but still nothing. My OH says she might be doing it when were not looking. They are not crying and seem quite content, but i cant help thinking if they are constipated, any ideas?, thanks.

If they hadn't poo'd in 16 days then they would be in serious trouble by now, one of my litters I didn't see anything until they were around 4 weeks old, mum was so good she kept them spotlessly clean and I didn't see any signs of poo.

I'm sure they are fine.

i had the same worry as you awhile ago now ,if you are very worried pick up a pup and wipe its bits with some cotton wool make it warm ,you might get them to poo alittle bit ,if loads come out then she might not be doing it very offten ,thats the problem i had she was doing to but not much ,or she was missing some of them ,it dont take very long to do ,i would check twice aday some did massive poos(soory!) some nothing so i knew mum had done that 1 ,gave me peace on mind :)

I think your bitch is just being very clean and you just haven't seen it, im sure the puppies would be crying alot as they would be uncomfortable.

Some of my girls keep pups so clean that I never see a poo or a dirty bum.

If pups seem content, I doubt that anything is wrong.

Same here, I never really saw any poo in the box until I started weaning. What I did see of it was a weird greenish colour which my friend had to reassure me was normal - the BOTB doesn't mentioned that one! :-D

Ah I never worried, but had given birth and breastfed my won babies, so knew this was usual.

Babies do green poo too???

It is called Meconium, as with pups it gets less green over a few days/a week or so, and then is the classic mustard colour.

Hi
It is very rare that I see a poo before the pups are getting onto their feet. Mum will usually be so fastidious that you just do not see it. I do sometimes see a dirty patch on the vet bed where a pup has poo'ed and Mum has washed it up!! If they are settled and happy, eating well and sleeping then she is doing a great job. Do not wish it on yourself too soon....there will be lots to come that Mum will take one look at and say "Over to you!!"
