Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Litter with diarrhoea after raw meat (locked)

I wondered if anyone has had this problem,I have a large breed litter of 6 (athletic large breed) who are not gaining alot of weight they are growing but are  very ribby.
We lost mum at 10 days and I have been hand rearing them, started them on solids at 3 weeks and all was fine until i intoduced the raw meat I did it in small increments over days but it has gone straight through them and am now back on a complete, large breed (HSPlan) and they are still not brilliant, they are all running around and their poos are solid,so no worries there its just their weight im concerned about.
Any suggestions would be gratefully recieved
Thanks

What raw meat was it?  That might help with answers for you.

They should be filling out nicely, pups should not be ribby at all, so your right to worry about the diet.

I can tell you what I give mine and hope it will suffice for yours too.

Mine get scrambled egg with goats milk in the morning, next they get chicken with rice, mince meat with rice or white fish with rice, this can be raw or cooked, (if raw it needs to have been frozen first to kill off bacteria and then defrosted and served) then soaked good quality puppy food, with perhaps a chicken top up, same again for the 4th meal. If the food is gone in seconds and the pups are quick to it then introduce a 5th meal. They are also offered goats milk with egg yolk and of course water is always down.

Pups are very energetic so need plenty of small meals.

From 5 weeks of age they are offered a raw chicken wing as a replacement for one of their meals too, (with supervision)

Your problem may be that the pups need the rice along with the raw, dogs can vary in tolerance to different things, some pups have no problems others do, so introducing the rice should sort out the problem.

However, the dry completes are just that complete, so really it is only a breeders indulgence as a need to add extra to the diet, just make sure that you are giving enough, pups should fill out with the complete food too, also are the pups being fed with their own little bowls now? Otherwise the glutten of the litter will have half the food. :-)

Yes puppies have own bowls in a weenafeeder so can keep an eye on whos eating what,I dont think the complete is smelly enough for them if you get my drift! They are very half hearted about it. I have been buying meat from anglian and started them on tripe it went straight through them, hence back to complete
My breed can be notorious picky eaters but  the puppies are usually ok. I did the same with last litter and all was well i wondered if it had anything to do with them being hand reared? but i cant see how really. They are 7 weeks old and are on 5 meals a day.
I think I may well try the rice .

Our pups did very well with raw beef mince, they absolutley loved it! If they're not devouring their complete food, it might be worth a try mixing in some scrambled egg or raw beef. I used fresh but have since realised it should have been frozen/thawed.

We also gave fresh goats milk with every meal, like a little dessert, I would get it ready in a jug and just pour into their empty bowls. Boy did they love that...
