I have a 6 year old chihuahua and I had him done when he was about two years because he was humping everything. He did stop humping but ever since he plays with himself. Lately its all the time. Every time I turn my back he's licking it .vet has rued out any health problems. How do I stop him? It drives me crazy

Sounds like habit and boredom.

its not boredom. he spends all day playing with my other dog. its only when shes had enough of play and wants a nap, then he gos behind the sofa to play with it

How much time do you spend playing with him - one to one.

loads. hes a mummys boy.

What about training, do you spend much time each day wearing him out mentally rather than physically through play?

Give him some mind games...make him hunt for treats in the garden and around the house.
Get him doing obedience work to use his brain.
Take him on lots of stimulating walks.

What is your reaction to him when he goes off to 'do his thing'? 

Could be infection or some other problem as he was 2 years when he was done he should be fully mature but there may well be some physical problem or infection, as has been said it could be a habit although if he is kept occupied he should not be developing licking habits unless there is pain or discomfort.

when he dose it I tell him no and he stops, but if he thinks i cant see him he starts again. i was more looking for if there was somthing i could use to stop it like a spray. i think its just habbit, he has always been more interested in playing with it than anything else. i try to distract him with games and toys but if hes anoyed at me for stopping him, he walks off in a huff and wont play lol. i have been told off by my OH for giving him to much atention . believe me, its not bordom.

If he were mine I would want him checked by a vet. Excessive behaviour what ever it is will have a cause as it is not normal. Sorry just seen you have seen a vet who said nothing was wrong but clearly there is something amiss so try again.

Keep an eye that he doesn't cause a sore from the licking.

yes mite need to pop him back for a chat with the vet, i offten wonder if  he was done properly, he use to do it before he was done and i hoped that would be the end of it, he did it less after  but never stopped, and lately he dose it most of the time, hes not just licking it he rubs it with his paw too and you can tell hes liking it and its not an itch.

Is this a Elkhound? I have seen this sort of behaviour in toy breeds but not in the Elkhound, they are a clean breed and spend time on cleaning and grooming but if he is doing is to excess I am sure something is wrong if not physical then may be some sort of emotional hang up. Would think it difficult not to 'do' a male properly but it is possible that other parts of this dogs hormonal system are producing or mimicking testosterone. I do know that a castrated dog can smell like an in season bitch so perhaps it can also develop abnormal male hormones.

Ah, yes, this is far more common in the toys, still have him checked out again and perhaps the vet can give him something to sort things out a bit. Can see how irritating it could be and in the end he will make himself sore.

I'm in agreement with everything that has been said it is usually a sign of something being wrong, I'm taking a guess that he is not sore otherwise you would have said, although a vet check will not go amiss, I'm just looking at his age now, he's 6 years old, so he has been doing this for a very long time, you say you've taken him to the vet previously and nothing was wrong, you don't mention any nasty discharge or soreness, so looks like his bit of fun............ :-)

Trouble is you can't use a deterrant or a spray or a nasty taste I guess as you were hoping for, as he needs to clean himself so going near his p*nis can't be a negative act, there is nothing you can do.

IMO all you can do is distract him when he is doing it, when you catch him doing it at least! It's a habit and he likes it, what can you do? Apart from find him another hobby as suggested. I'm sure Youtube will find it hilarious.

To be honest if he isn't making himself sore I would try to ignore it, or distract him with something else if your in dog training/play mode.

Part of the fun for him may be the attention it gets him.  If you ignore it, then he may not bother so much, or if he does, well if it isn't harming him, let him, just not in front of the vicar or Mother in law, ;)

Perhaps put him out of the room your in when he does it, so he realises this will be a solitary pleasure if he insists on doing it.

I think putting vaseline on the area daily may at least prevent any soreness and ingestion of such a small amount won't harm him.  Works well on the bitches that have had puppies and got sore.

lol. i would feel strange filming it for you tube but yes he is doing the W word. and he is having lovely time doing it. iv never known a dog do it useing a paw before. i do wish he would go to the bathroom to do it though.

I told hubby about this and he knew a Jack Russell male called Spot who used to do that, with a  a paw too.  Actually he fatherd a litter to Dean's Working JR bitch.

its not a prety sight.  was not happy when he did it in front of my sisters kids, but was funny watching everyone trying to explain to the kids what he was doing lol must be a small dog thing .
