Topic Dog Boards / Showing / sun protection for my dogs coat ?
- By vinya Date 23.04.10 13:28 UTC
With summer on the way and shows being held outside I want to keep my dogs coat safe from the sun . What's the best coat protector that can be left in with no build-up. Any recommendations ?

I wouldn't worry about it, if it is sunny just stand in the shade or cover with a wet towel before going in the ring.

I never walk mine in the heat of the day in Summer and the dogs themselves choose to keep to the cool of the house or find a shady spot in the garden, though at the moment they are doing a little early morning sun worshipping.

we are hoping to go to the derby show in June. dog show is in the morning and then we are going around the show ground with family to see everything. so if its hot it will be a lot of time in the sun. i put sun screen on her head last year for days out. but i was hoping to find a dog friendy spray to put on her coat.

I brought plush puppy and found it leaves a residue on the coat looking for something else. I believe hub is doing one a lot cheaper

The coat they are born with is the best protection of them all.

If you mean protection from the heat then yeah be sensible with how long he/she walks about in it. Carry water and perhaps a wet towel to lay over if they start to overheat.

If you mean protection from bleaching then 1 day out in it wont make a lot of difference.

The only reason I would use any 'sun products' would be a hairless dog or on the nose of one with a white/pink snout (like blaze markings).

Dogs hair colour will bleach in the sun or by UV rays the same as ours so if showing can protect it with a sunscreen spray.
