Has anyone used Tardak injections to relieve entire dogs "desire" when bitch in season?
I was hoping that when my bitch came into season she be going to stay at my mums for a while and therefore away from my 11 month old entire dog (who we show). Unfortunately, when aged mother realised this could be for a few weeks, she's decided she might not be able to cope and therefore I have them both here and the bitch started her season on Thurs/Friday.
Someone mentioned they'd given their dog an injection which I now think was a Tardak injection. Has anyone any experience of them used for this purpose and did it help at all? And did it affect the dog in anyway regarding coat and showing?
Having used Tardak several times on adult male dogs I found it gave them a more laid back attitude to life and became less aggressive to other males. The effects lasted for around a couple of months but do not kick in for a week or so after the injection. Giving Tardak in the hope it might prevent a male dog being interested in a bitch ready for mating is probably being a bit optomistic! However it may well temporarily affect his libido and fertility.
Tardak did not affect the overall coat in my short haired dogs but the injection needs to be given in an inconspicuous place as it could cause loss of hair or change of coat colour at the actual injection site. Talk it over very carefully with your Vet before giving it to your dog as there are several possible transient side effects.
From a personal point of view I would not give it to a valuable male intended for breeding and showing. I prefer to put up with the hassle of total seperation involved when keeping stud dogs and in season bitches in the same house but obviously not everyone is able to cope easily with these arrangements.
Looks like not worth it if not instant and already worried about side affects anyway. Loss of coat on my long coated could be a real mess too.
I'll just keep on trying to convince myself that 3/4 weeks isn't that long!
I may think again if the relationship between the boys (one entire and two castrated) inflames due to her season.

Has anyone had a dog injected with Tardak who is also on prednisilone? My boy was injected today and he is on 5mg of pred every other day. I read somewhere that Tardak should not be given with other steroids.
Thanks

Apart from the hair loss what are the other side effects with Tardak?
Selected info taken from the product contra-indications ............"Tardak should not be used in dogs already receiving progestogens.Transient side-effects of increased appetite, polydipsia and polyuria have occasionally been seen following administration of Tardak. Tardak should be used with great care when animals are under treatment with other steroids.Tardak should not be used in diabetic animals."

In your opinion, do you think that the effects Tardak has on the dogs personality (such as quietening them down etc) is a good guide to what the dog would be like if they were castrated? This is one of the reasons I was thinking about Tardak for my dog??

Yes, in my opinion it would give a very good indication. Occasionally castration does not have the expected result on a dog's temperament. It is too late then to return to what was the more acceptable behaviour experienced before castration.

how does it differ from Suprelorin? I have done some reading on here and other forums but can't find much info about the differences between them and which is best. All the talk on here about unexpected results of neutering have led to me wanting to try before I buy so to speak!

Same here cheekychow!
I think Superloin is an implant and lasts for a few months (Tardak being an injection and lasting for a few weeks) I think??
I also think there are different hormones used in each one too???

Glad I am not alone Perry. I am even confused about what suprelorin is called as it appears to be registered with the medical bodies/register as suprelorin but the website relating to the medical info is titled superlorin. Confused and then some!
I would be really interested to hear from anyone who has tried both.

I think I am just a bit dyslexic and I just read it as superloin as that seemed to make sense (to me it did anyway) :)
I am leaning towards the Tardak though, as I only want to have an idea of what his personality would be like after castration. My thinking is an injection with results lasting for a few weeks is preferable to an implant lasting for a few months (I think)!

I have used Tardak and can honestly say that i've not noticed a difference in behaviour or in any other way in the dog. Each person though is going to have different findings as we all know every dog is different in how they react.

Perry, I took my boy to the vets this week to ask about suprelorin and the vet advised me that due to it lasting 6 months it is a very long experiment if my boy reacts badly to it (e.g. becomes nervous and aggressive without the testosterone for confidence). He said he would prefer to use tardak as it only lasts a few weeks. He didn't know of any side effects but worked out the dosage for a 45KG+ dog would be about £30ish.
I am going to do some more reading before going through with it but it looks like tardak may be the way forward for me.

Did not notice anything with my lad after Tardak, but when finally castrated he got worse! Hindsight is a wonderful thing - I wish I hadn't had him done now.

IMO you do not get a true idea of what may happen if you castrate using Tardak, it takes a while to kick in and then the effect reduces quickly, Suprelorin on the other hand does closely mimic castration and will give you a good idea of how the dog may be - one problem with Suprelorin it will last anything from 6 months to 15 plus
To use Tardak to get through a bitch's season may work but I would prefer to kennel the bitch.
I used Suprelorin on my Samoyed male. He was 3 years old and about to start on his first season of agility competing. My trainer advised that it would help him to focus better as he was sometimes prone to ‘doing his own thing’ and occasionally marking in the ring. I used the chip for 6 months duration (there is also 12 months). It takes around 6 weeks to fully kick in, the testicles then gradually shrinking to the size of hazelnuts. They didn’t come back to full size in my boy until 9-10 months after the implant. His male behaviours such as marking, mounting etc and being generally extremely over the top, did decrease although I wouldn’t say any stopped completely. He was 100% focused on his agility and me when in the ring and had a dream first season. Now for the down side. With his returning hormones he is obviously experiencing a huge testosterone surge (now at age 4) and all his male behaviours have become worse than previously. He has also now started to roam in search of mostly other males to mount (fortunately there are very few in season bitches out in this area), so that I now have to keep him on a long line (despite excellent recall training) on my usual walks. I don’t want to neuter him, having read Stan Rawlinson’s (The Dog Listener) article and others on the subject and am therefore hoping that with time this behaviour will diminish. I could use Suprelorin again but it isn’t recommended for long term use, and the burgeoning testosterone will obviously occur again. Have also to rethink my plans to add a bitch to our household.
Did you mean ‘kennel the bitch’ as in Boarding Kennels, as I am not sure they would take in season bitches?

This thread is 10 years old.
The thread is 8 years old to be exact but it is still coming up when I researched Tardak on line and is still relevant to interested parties. As I have added relevant info it is now up to date on Suprelorin, and Tardak is still the same product so nothing is out of date apart from the fact that the people who started the thread did so 8 years ago.
