Topic Dog Boards / Health / Dobermann acne?
- By LadyG [gb] Date 07.12.02 18:37 UTC
Hi folks,

Not a particularly pleasant topic but has anyone else noticed acne on their dogs? My dobe is 18 months and he's had these large, crusty, bumpy lumps on his chin on and off for the past six months. There's about 10 of them concentrated at the end of his chin.

We've just put it down to teenage spots but at the moment he's really suffering - he's so clumsy he keeps knocking the tops off and they bleed all over my kitchen and me. He's very sensitive about his head being touched too at the moment so they're obviously sore.

Any ideas/advice before I take him to the vet on Monday (and get laughed out of the clinic for being a dumbass) ?!?

Thanks Carolyn - where can I get hold of this Sudocrem? Is it a vet trip or over the counter job?

One of my Boxers had this, I took him to the vet and it was something called Pustular Dermatitis. Was given a wash to use and it cleared up and never came back,

You can get it from any chemist. It's brilliant with nappy rash and eczema. :)

Hi Jaime

Very, very frequent in Dobes. I tend to squeeze them to get rid of the worst of it, wash and dry with paper towel and then put savlon on them. I find they struggle to start with but after a time or two will stand still and let me squeeze so it must release some of the pressure for them. I used to have one bitch who would come and "present" her chin to me when she had them (I could squeeze her spots, clean her teeth with a dental scraper but try and cut her toenails and she was off ).

Other common remedies include washing area a couple of times a day with hibiscrub - obtainable from chemist, sudeocrem (but this is horrible stuff and sticks to everything), and savlon. Keep the area as clean as you can.

Unless you or your dog are really bothered I would not visit the vet for this as they will probably do loads of tests and try various antibiotics whereas if you wait they will disappear - and probably come back at various times of his life. I can't remember the last time I advised not visiting a vet :o

Hope I'm not too late too comment.

My bullmastiff has had them in the past and it's just teenage acne the same as kids get, it's nothing to worry about although rather inconvenient if they pop!!! Yum yum. Acne is common only in large short haired breeds such as dobs, rotties, boxers and bullmastiffs. Mine had them for a month or so and we just bathed them and they went away by themselves. I was horrified when I saw them at first - lots of hard bloody crusty lumps. Nice!
