- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.04.10 20:00 UTC
right this question is abit different from others and thats why i carnt find anything on here?

my girl has 10days to go ,she is eating every bit of food 3 times aday!
pre mating she was 34.4kg ,shes eating puppy food now and haveing around 800g every day, shes even eating her food with the wormer in it ,i just put it with dry puppy kibble and its gone in a flash,
should i give her more? just worried she will get to big with food and not pups ,i was told 4 maybe 5 but i do think more maybe 7 ,you can still see her sides ,her tum is hanging down now ,shes doing very well ,still jumping :( like a loon! so do i keep her on what shes having or should i increase the mount? never had this before my girls normaly dont eat at this stage lol

Just my opinion, but at this late stage, I don't think that giving her extra food is going to suddenly put another pound on the weight of each pup.

I assume that you mean that you're worried about the pups being too big for her to birth naturally?  The way I see it, she could easily give birth in another 3 days, and the pups would be perfectly viable.

So I wouldn't be too worried about letting her have 4 meals a day.  Just my take on things.

thanks jeanSW :) i will add another meal in and see how she goes :) x

If she is carrying 7 like you think, she will burn up those calories quick enough!  :-)

I have bitch due to whelp in 10 days as well and she is having up to 6 small meals per day. In between if she is feeling peckish she get vegetables to chew on.  She is burning up the food fast with the growing pups so I don't worry about her putting on excess weight.

Good luck with your girls when the time comes. :-)

Must admit by the time my girls whelp they are only getting half as much food as normal, and they have always stayed in great shape, and had good size puppies.

Too much weight can cause whelping difficulties, and I pile the food in once the pups are born, and mine almost straight away are on 3 to four times normal rations.

My bitch is the total opposite!! She is on day 56 and for the past week has hardly eaten anything. I am trying to temp her with anything and everything. From week 4 - 7 she was hungry all the time.

I am offering her small meals 4 times a day and there is Royal canin Starter available all the time but she hardlys touches it.

Im not worried about the pups as her belly is growing rapidly but more for her as i know she is going to be like a rake after she whelps!!!

Same here, and that's if they are eating at all.

I think we have to remember that every bitch is different and will do what suits her at that moment in time.
I know that my girl will eat 4 or 5 small meals up till the last 2 days when she will reduce what she eats and I know that she will not eat anything substansial for 24 to 48 after she has had her pups but from day 3 day onwards she will eat us out of house and home.  :-)

and hows your girl going abbeypap has she gone off her food yet?
- By LizandDogs [gb] Date 24.04.10 12:51 UTC
My bitch has been off her food for almost a week, I've been getting her to eat at least once a day so far, but she's hardly eaten anything today. I'm cooking lamb to see if I can get her to eat that..... not that she's spoilt!

White Lily , my girl is still scoffing her food , she hasn't turned down a meal yet and is due next weekend. Some days i look at her and think she looks smaller too so don't worry. My girl was meant to be having 11 according to the vet who did the scan but i can't see where on earth she could be hiding them so i doubt she is. Not long now and we will find out though. Don't worry about her not eating , they do go off their food nearing the end , keep us posted.

My girl is doing fine, having her usual 5 meals a day and enjoying every one of them.
She has dropped down quite a bit and though her due date is the 2nd May she has in
the past gone two days earlier so after tomorrow she won't be left on her own for any
length of time.

Though I have my girls scanned I don't go by the numbers the vet see's, I've had double
images in the past and spent money having the emergency vet out for a pup that never
existed.  I always palpate my girls and go with what I feel, scan only confirms for me that
they are in pup.

And even though I've whelped a few litters I still get nervous and excited at the same time
when they get to the last week.  Can't wait to meet the new arrivals but at the same time
desperate for all to go well. :-)
