hi all,
i feel like its a bit of a mine field when it comes to worm treatments. My newfie was prescrbed a pipet last time, saw a new vet today, stan the newfie weighed 60lbs,is 19 weeks old and they prescribed milebex.
Interested to know what you all use
thanks

I use milbemax for my 8. I have used drontal in the past. WHat you were probably given before was a pipette of stronghold or advocate which does fleas and roundworms but not tapeworms, whereas milbemax does all the main types of worm.

I use Panacur 10% for all puppies and pregnant bitches.  Pups move on to Drontal at 6 months, which all the other adults use.  I don't personally use pipets, preferring Drontal and Frontline.

You are going to get loads of different opinions!!  :-)

Drontal for worming, Advantix for fleas and ticks.

Wormers - Panacur 10% for pregnant bitches, and panacur in syringe for pups. Drontal for grown up dogs. These have all been good for us. I don't use Millbemax as the few times I have got it it's had a rather violent effect.
Flea/tick - Billy no mates herb mix. Stopped using spot on treatments a few years ago when a friend's dog got it in the bloodstream ... resulting in epilepsy - the spot on company paid all the vet bills!! In 5% of applications of spot on treatments, the chemical will get into the blood stream.

A friend with two dogs has just used advantix and had a nasty reaction from both of her dogs .

I give my dogs 4 seasons natural wormer once a month, brewers yeast and a clove of garlic most days, and I also add pumpkin seeds to their food, they are both worm free and flea free.

Only Panacur - only ever will use panacur :)

wow...I had never heard that! (the whole flea treatments getting into bloodstream) Really quite worrying.....

My springer suffers seizures, although the vets are reasonably certain it is not epilepsy, they are not 100% certain what it is... they suspect it is exercise related collapse but this is not common/recorded in springers.  They never mentioned anything about the poss it was flea treatment related.

(off to google for more info :-))

The exact same thing happened to my friends springer. She collapsed and was very jittery. Was immediately put on a glucose drip and recovered. Was put down to exercise related collapse with her blood sugar dropping and causing symptoms of a hypoglycaemic attack.

Drontal here, used Panacur and nearly lost a litter because of it, completely scoured them they ended up at the vets on drips.

Very interesting to read experiences of other breeders with various wormers. I have used Drontal for adults and puppies for many years and never had a bad experience. However can't say the same for Panacur and Milbemax and would never use them again. However I'm sure different breeds have varying tolerance levels to specific wormers.

I issue all my new puppy owners with extensive written material as to why they should never use any "spot on" type treatments. I have written into my ABS contract that the application of any of these pesticides to the puppy completely invalidates the guarantee of health given by me as the breeder. I give a warning not to accept the free sample often offered by Vets on the first visit with their new puppy.

How do you know they're worm free?
- By Tigger2 Date 21.04.10 10:03 UTC
I use drontal for all wormings one year, then panacur then next then back to drontal again. I've thought about using milbemax as it is cheaper, but am worried about the bit on their website that says care should be used when dealing with young collies etc. None of mine are particularly young but as I have 1 that I don't know the MDR1 status of yet I won't take the chance.

The wormer I use is monthly so it is an on-going natural treatment, and I do have their pooh tested about every 12 months at the vets -not sure all vets do this but you need to ask.

The problem with chemical wormers, apart from them being extremely strong and can cause adverse reactions, is, that the dogs can be re-infected immediately after use - as soon as they start sniffing and eating all the stuff they do outside again !  So even after using chemical wormers you are still best to get your dogs pooh tested regularly at the vets to make sure they are worm free, otherwise you have no idea.

Yes it is worrying, one of the reasons dogs are not supposed to swim in lakes/rivers after treatment is that it can harm the fish!

Use garlic each day for flea prevention either fresh or in tablet form.
