Hello, my bitch Zara was mated 13 and 12 days ago (her progesterone level was 50/ it rose very quickly!). Her discharge had paled right down, but came back up to darker for a few days towards the end of her heat. Now, she still has a minor discharge of brown old blood, but only a dab on a tissue. My partner in this dog and her breeder insisted she go on 10 days antibiotics from mating, to stop any possible infection as she has had this happen to a bitch in the past. Zara has finished those. This discharge has no sign of any pus in it. My feeling is she is still cleaning out after a heat, but does it mean she might not be pregnant?

My bitch bled for 33 days, and was mated day 13 - 17, and had 7 healthy pups.  My vet said their was no evidence of infection and would not prescribe antibiotics, just for the sake of it.

Sounds very good to me. I agree with you, no antibiotics, but my partner is a very determined lady. Thanks for replying.

I wouldn't worry about that either. A friends bitch bled from when she was mated and has just had 6 babies at the weekend.  As long as its not green or smelly, hopefully she will be pregnant :)

Ellie's prone to infections post season, so I do have her on antibiotics, but the dark discharge wouldn't bother it, it's creamy or pale green ones that generally mean infection. Good luck!
