Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Silent Season/ Infection/ Due in season?

Hi guys, would really appreciate your input.

At the beginning of January I had a giant breed bitch come to my boy, sadly she missed. The puppies would have been a month old now. She normally has 2 seasons a year, 6 monthly. Today she has been round for a play date with my boys today and both my boys have been incredibly interested... one is very experienced, the other has been used once before. They aren't humpy dogs as a rule, but both were latched on as though she was at her peak, both pinking. So we thought it was best to shut them inside out the way to calm down. We inspected her and no swelling, no bleeding etc, infact no signs whatsoever. She has been scent marking everywhere here, which she doesn't normally do. She's been well in herself. My boys are pretty good at spotting the right day and generally aren't interested if they aren't.

She hasn't been around any other bitches and has had a thorough bath at the beauty parlour since finishing her season too. She hasn't flagged at all, but she didn't at all during her season anyway.

So, what do you think it is? At first I was thinking silent season... but no swelling, then was thinking infection, but she just seems so well in herself and nothing out of character, then was thinking maybe she is due in season soon, but then why were my boys trying their luck now when they normally show no interest?

My boys were very very interested, like she was at her peak?

Any advice or input gratefully received.

yes she was fine ,vet did a scan and she had small amount of swelling so could of been the start of pyometra (not sure if ive spelt that right) she did have a litter after this tho and all was fine x

Ok thanks, this is what I was thinking at one point, but have only ever known dogs be poorly with infection. Will pass this on though.

With you saying that she is scenting, I would have thought silent season.  But agree that AB's would be a safe course of action.

Thanks, she is going to the vet tomorrow, so hopefully we'll be a little wiser.... is there any swelling with a silent season?

OK, been to vets, no temperature, no discharge so they have ruled out infection. Have only known silent seasons with swelling. Planning a litter on her next season, do you think she could be coming into season this early? Its not even 4 months since last one

My girl can be all over with her seasons and prior to getting pregnant  the first time her seasons could be every 4 months we were quite lucky to get her pregnant  as those that come into season quite frequentlly may have problems in conceiving but since then they have settled down to a regular pattern and she has since had another litter.

I would be wary about ruling out infection on temperature and discharge alone. One of my girls was being pestered non stop, even humped by her sister. I took her to the vets and insisted on a urine test because she was no where near season. Turned out that she had quite severe water infection hense the extra attention.

Thanks will pass this on
