Hello Doberbeast owners,

Our pup is turning 6 months old tomorrow and she went for her monthly weigh in and vets check up on thursday. On thursday she weighed in at 21 kg. Does this weight seem ok for a 6mnth female. People sometimes comment that she is skinny but you can't see her ribs and she does have super long lanky legs! Our Rhodesian Bitch weighed a little more at 6 months (24.2 kg) but now she is a 36.5kg monster.

Everytime i try and google anything about weight it brings me up american sites with owners bragging about their 6 month pups being 38 kilo beasts already so i thought it would be better to ask fellow dobie owners on here!

Does anyone have an estimate of what she will weigh fully grown based on her 6 month age? What can i expect her to gain in the next few months?

I can't give any estimations as to her expected adult weight, but can tell you the current weight of my 2.

Lottie, who is now 7 1/2, weighs 30kg, and looks well covered.

Hattie, who is nearly 5, weighs 27.5 kg and could probably do with a little more weight, but is so nutty I just can't get her much above that.

IMO a lot of the Dobes in the ring are far too heavy, and I certainly wouldn't want mine much over 30kgs. They are both breed standard height.

Thanks pedlee i can always count on you to answer my dobie questions!

Yeah was thinking that she'd hit about 30kg. Though i met a 6yr old brown and tan boy the other day who was nearly as big as a Dane, i nearly fainted thinking ours would get that big!

Her Halti Harness is working an absolute treat by the way but she also seems to have calmed down a lot now too. I think this is just a lull before the storm though when she hits her teenage years! Joy!

Can't comment on Dobes but my DDB has always been quite skinny. She has only just reached her perfect weight and she is 2 and a half now.

I wouldn't worry too much - I'd much rather grow them slowly than pile weight on them.

I can't remember the weight of my 2 when they were that age, but I will try to bring out the paperwork! but now they are Xena my bitch is 26" to the withers and weighs usually between 33 and 35 kilo's dependant on what she is up to. Blade my male is a nightmare with his weight and is about 35 kilo's also, he is 28" to the withers. He could do with being about 40 kilo's really as he is skinny !! but she sounds to be on track anyway and about 5-10 months of age they have that horrible gangly leg stage and then they fill out... took Xena 2 years to mature properly in body and I still don't think that Blade has lol. Xena will be 4 May 23rd and Blade will be 5 13th June. will go off and look for the paperwork now if I still have it!

I think i'm going to get my dobie Lola to get weighed tommorow cause im very curious as to what she ways now, shes always looked abit on the skinny side but shes healthy but i think just a bit more weight on her and she'd be perfect. I wrote a thread a bit similar to this before but i wanted to know about what food could help her to gain weight and i got some excellent feedback, everybody was extremely helpful i can also always rely on pedlee and also emz you too have given me some really helpful info. Im glad that ive now found some other dobie owners that i can talk to because at first i had'nt come across many on here and i thought that i might not b able to get much info specifically on dobermans.

Did you weigh Lola in the end? i had a look at some of your pictures she is a very pretty girl, she looks a lot like our daisy.

hi Hilly, I have been searching and not managed to find the weights of my 2... all I have is that Blade my male weighed 12 kg at 10 weeks old?!?
- By rachie [gb] Date 08.04.10 20:50 UTC
im getting her weighed tommorow at 3 along with having her nails clipped so im quite curious to know what she weighs if i had to take a guess i would say around 25kg. aww have u got any pics of your dobes? I took her over the fields today she had a great time along with jumping in the stream thats always good fun lol!

12 Kilos at 10 weeks, what a little chubster! I think daisy was only 7.5!

I wish Daisy would go in the stream Rachie, until about 3 weeks ago she wouldnt even put her foot in a puddle and she wasnt too keen on mud never mind a stream! She does always look longingly at other dogs swimming in the lake but she hasnt taken the plunge just yet! I dont know if she'll ever be a swimming dog! I always try and make her come and stand in the stream with me (if i have my wellies on) but she never will the little wuss!

Hi

My oldest bitch who is 8 and half goes 32kgs.  Her daughter who is 4 goes approx 33 kgs.  My old boy went 45 kgs in his prime.  It also depends on the bone struture of the individual Dobe, for instance the little sister of our younger bitch goes approx 30kgs, her whole frame being smaller.  None of dogs have been overweight, both bitches are shown.  Don't worry about weight too much, alot of vets like to see them underweight for some reason. I just use my eyesight to manage their weight, if I see tuck up, and an indent along the loins then I'm happy.  If you can see the ribs too clearly then they need weight on, if you can just see the outline of the last rib as they turn then I'm happy with that.  Sorry I can't remember what they were when they were pups ( long time ago !!!! )

Hope this help a litte :-) :-)

well looks like lola is still weighing 23kg after all this time lol! We're starting her on tripe tommorow and hoping for the best. Her nails didnt need to be clipped so they left them alone. I took her over the fields today again and we met a lovely golden retriever over there they had a little play. Lola again decided to jump in the stream but shes had an action packed day so shes absolutely zonked now lol!

I wish Daisy would go in the stream Rachie,

Be very careful what you wish for :-) One of my dogs would swim in your mug of tea if you let him :-)

I honestly wouldn't worry about trying to get her to put on weight now - as long as she is healthy and eating well, good coat and energy then that's what counts, health wise they are better off lean that heav=ier anyway.  She will likely fill out as she matures and as a breed that are prone to boney related problems I would always rather have them on the lighter side.  My adult Dobe is 26.5 kg, she is trim but certainly not skinny, but she is a bit of a midget at 24.5inches :-)

Hi,

My pup was 32kgs at his last trip to the vets at 7-8mths old. I recall him being around 27kgs at 5-6mths old...I keep him trim. He is fed raw meat diet with some Pro Plan. Tripe should fill her out a bit I think.

Whilst I have all you dobie peeps in one place, do you all feed from raised bowls? Weve never fed our other dogs from raised bowls but I know that dobes seem to be extremely succeptible to bloat, is feeding from a raised bowl supposed to reduce the risk?
- By Pedlee Date 12.04.10 15:10 UTC
I feed all my dogs from raised bowls, even my Sussex Spaniel (obviously a more appropriate sized stand, not Dobe sized!). There is so much conflicting information on raised bowls, but they always look so much more comfortable.
- By jovigirl [gb] Date 14.04.10 11:26 UTC
Yes all my Dobes are fed up on stands always have been.  I agree with Pedlee there are conflicting reports, but they do look more comfortable up higher.  Bloat is a problem with our breed, I lost my old boy the other year to it, the Vet said it was nothing to do with how I feed, but a combination of age and other problems.  However I blamed myself, but there was nothing I could do, even getting him to the Vet within 10 mins.  Most Dobes I know are pigs especially the bitches so I put an upturned cup in the bowl to slow them down, instead of taking giant gulps of air and food.  I believe there is a bowl called a slow down bowl !!!,  but the cup works fine.
