Topic Dog Boards / General / Dog seat belts

Hello,

Can i buy a dog seat belt/harness that will allow my dog to lay down ?

The ones i have tried sit so tightly and even at their extended length my dog cant lay down.

She loves to sit in the front seat and only have a 2 seater car so boot not an option...last night going through Brighton i had to break so hard to miss a girl that ran out into the road Pru went flying into the foot well...thankfully unharmed.

Thank you.

You must find something I think you will find the police will look upon a loose dog in the front seat as a missile and do you!! Plus the fact that a dog flying through the windscreen is not a pretty thought. I had one from PAH for Treacle which was a harness that attached to the seat belt and as she moved the seat belt did too. She could lie down easily in it. but if I breaked hard the inertia seat belt cut in and stopped her damaging herself. Mind you she was in the back seat but no reason why it would not work in the front.
Hope you find something ASAP...
Aileen

Thanks Aileen, i did try the pah one but when she tried to lay it just didn't seem long enough....was fitted by a staff member so know it was correctly fitted.
I have just seen one on an american site so may try this...it has a large padded breast plate so think it would be ideal.

I've got the PAH one too I think, black with little reflective triangles by the top clip. They can lie down while attached to the seatbelts. But I wouldn't advise having your girl in the front, I've been told that should the airbag go off it can injure or even kill a dog, specially a small one.

Thank you...i don't have a choice re her travelling in the front of the car (other than buying a different car) but the front and side airbags on the passenger side are disengaged everytime she travels in it.

I have seen one on Orvis but the customer support couldn't guarantee that my dog would be able to lay down.

The DogsTrust sell harnesses and it comes with an extra attachement for a seat belt to be passed through. I don't use that bit as my dogs are crated in the car but it  is like a lead handle with a clip on the end that attaches to the harness. The harness itself has a wide padded chest strap and doesn't rub my dog at all.

I bought dog harnesses made under the RAC brand, they have a padded chest strap and a loop to thread the seat belt through and the dogs can lay down if they want to. Got them from Halfords.

Thank you all for your answers...you have made my stress levels lower dramatically :)

Before I had a car whereby my dog could go in the boot he had an RAC harness and could sprawl out on the back seats in it no problem.  The seatbelt goes through a loop on the harness.

I have one similiar to the RAC ones and my guys can lie down fine with them no problem.  RU sure that your seatbelts OK?
- By annee [gb] Date 09.04.10 13:32 UTC
Hi, yes the belts fine...what i have been finding was that the harness seemed to tighten so much under the arms that my dog would then sit up immediatley....this was also the case with my friends Bracco.

This belt clips directly into the seat belt socket http://www.yourdogsneeds.co.uk/clix-car-safe-harness-medium-p-157.html

I find the once that I use on the dogs through my work are really comfortable, they are by Trixie.  The dogs can lay down, and they are adjustable.

I also have the PAH one - but I use it with the RAC attachment that loops round the seatbelt. I did have the RAC one but found it harder to put on correctly - at least the PAH one with its reflective bits makes it easier to tell which way round it's meant to go, useful if you're in a hurry!

Just be careful, some dogs learn to accidentally-on-purpose tread on the red button and release themselves. That's something which needs to be addressed by manufacturers!

I have one that is like a harness with a wide soft panel down the front of the chest. There is then a strap (like seat belt material) attatched to the back and you slip the seatbelt through that. Dog can sit, lay, turn around etc. I just bought it from a local pet store, not sure what make it is.

Like some of the others, mine have a loop to put the seat belt through, and work quite well.

Same as you, I disengage the passenger air bags, as you are advised to do when carrying a baby in the front.  Works for me.
