Topic Dog Boards / Health / Golf ball size lump under the skin
- By kenya [gb] Date 08.04.10 10:09 UTC
Noticed yesterday on my dane bitch a lump on the top of her shoulder, its under the skin, and moves around, shes doesnt mind me feeling at it.
So took he to the vets last night, he thinks it a Sebaceous Cyst, and have given her a course of anti biotic's.
Has anybody else had this with there dogs, does the lump disappear or should it be removed, shes entered at her first champ show on Sat, shes been out the ring for a while, and its quite noticeable when she stands, should I not take her??

Thanks

These are quite common in our breed, a nuisance rather than a real problem in most cases.

they can be removed using a minimal excision technique, which can be done under local anaesthetic.  A large needle is used to get into the cyst, the opening is made a bit bigger, the gunk cleared out, and then the lining pulled out with forceps,  trimmed away and a stitch or glue used to close.

This is a cheaper and less unsightly option to the usual shave and GA, leaving you with a dog in a coated breed that is unshowable for 6 months to a year.

If you have been given AB's then it may be infected, but it won't simply go away until it opens up (on it's own or through intervention) and the contents cleared out.

My husband has one on his jaw, and has put off having it dealt with for 18 months or so.  her is the article relating to humans with the less invasive technique described.  Well worth printing off to show your vet. http://www.aafp.org/afp/2002/0401/p1409.html

Thanks Barbara ,a interesting read!
Hopefully it will disappear with the Anti b's, but if not will get it removed asap.

Very interesting, one of our BH's has had two removed already, tale and flank, the vet has never mentioned this technique. It has always been a full anaesthetic. Will remember this for the future. Many thanks.

Most vets have not been taught the technique, but once shown the article have been happy to do it this way, well ones willing to think outside the box have.

It is worth avoiding the shaving even if a GA is needed, though the vet needs to remember to leave the stitch longer than the guard hair to find it again.

my eldest dog whos 13 has had a lump on her chest for two years. it used to be golf ball size now its the size of a tomato. my vet told me if you can move it around it is safe, if you carnt its a bit more of a worry. i know vets say different things but i dont worry about it and it doesnt bother my dog.
