Topic Dog Boards / Health / Tic on Barney

Barney has a white looking tic on his ear.  This is only the second one he has had, so not doing bad.  Last time, as a puppy, we took him to vet and he charged £35 to remove it!  What is the best tool for removing?  I have heard of a tic o something which is supposed to be good but has anyone here used one? (a green plastic thingy I saw on You tube).  Any advice please would be great before we take plunge and remove.

The O'Tom tick hook is brilliant. Follow the clear instructions - gently place the 'fork' at the neck of the tick and carefully unscrew it (anticlockwise!) and the tick will come off intact.

The hook shouldn't cost more than about £3 including postage.

Having spent loads on all sorts of fangledy dangledy rubbish, I can confirm that little green hook is the best thing I've ever used.

On the offical website the videos seem to show that it doesn't matter which way you twist; the damned things come off very easily!

Yep, the little green hook works very well. :-) £35!!! Your vet is a gouging so and so!

Great guys.  Seems like the gadget for me!  I will order one and see how I get on.

Yes, don't order just one pack of Tom hooks, get a couple of packs - house and car.  You'll get a small and large, for different size ticks, in each pack.  Dead easy to use and no bits left behind to cause infection.

After reading this thread I ordered one from the link you put up Jan, and two different size hooks arrived in the post this morning!

The O'Tom tic thing worked a treat.  OH had killed the thing (with vaseline - although I have since realised that you shouldn't use that method anymore) but the tic still clung on.  Ordered the item - came next day.  I watched the videos and hey presto the bloomin thing came off easily with everything intact.  I will be far more confident getting rid of them in future - what a brilliant little tool.
