Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / to neuter or not to neuter.

I have just taken on a 2yr old terrier rehome. He is male dog agressive. It seems to be an 'i'll attack you before you attack me' type reaction. When introduced to placid males(entired or neutered) properly, ie. muzzled so a safe introduction, he then gets on fine and can go off lead and play happily.

From what i understand he hasnt had a vast amount of socialization, but i wondered if neutering him sooner rather than later would help?
He will be neutered at some point as i have an entire bitch, but i dont want to do it before we have worked on his issues, if they are due to a lack of confidence, as i do know that sometimes neutering can make them more insecure.
thanks

Maybe Superlorin might be a good alternative to castration regarding your bitch.  I don't know if this alters the confidence giving side of the testosterone, as I don't know what it does hormonally to make the males infertile.

I too would worry that if he is castrated his confidence would suffer, as his problems do seem fear based, and the last thing he needs is for undue interest in him from males.

Just be aware that superlorin can make some behaviour worse before it gets better.  It works on stimlating the gland to flood the body with testosterone initially.  The body then thinks it doesn't need to produce any further testosterone and that's when you see the "softening" effect of superlorin.  Just be extra careful for a couple of weeks after the jab.

Are vets ok with prescribing this and is it expensive?  I would be tempted to test out my boy to see if the lack of hormones would make any difference to how 'lively' he is with other dogs before getting the deed done.

I have been keen to let him develop as there are so many cautionary tales of neutering too early in large breeds and I don't want to effect his growth and probably wouldn't neuter him if the temporary drugs don't make much difference.  Anyone's experiences on the use of Superlorin would be appreciated.

One of my boys has the Suprelorin implant and was given a Tardak injection at the same time, which was supposed to stop that rush of hormones mentioned. He was a mild natured boy before and the implant did make him a little more clingy when on walks - not really interested in other dogs and made his recall amazing. I can't remember the exact cost as he was being treated for something else at the same time but I think the breakdown was something like £35 for the implant and £8 for the tardak.
We think his implant is starting to wear off as he is def. getting a bit cheekier and bolder with the other dogs and when on walks.

Thanks for the feedback.  my boy is quite reactive with other dogs but as I said I am reluctant to neuter too early or at all if it isn't the right solution.  For the price you have said I can't believe that vets don't offer this first to most people rather than rushing in to remove the furry plums at the first sign of any unrest or at their first appearance!

thanks for that. I will see how we go for the time being until he settles in fully. He goes off lead with a muzzle on in quiet areas and has a very good recall and is very focused on me. He doesnt go 'looking' for a fight so to speak, he gets a bit growly when other dogs bark at him but there has been an improvement even within the week or so i have had him. I think he needs consistency and more socialization before any decisions are made. He also needs to understand he is staying with me for the rest of his life- no matter what! <3 poor little mite hasnt had a great first few years.
