my springer spaniel has just turned 5months old but has also become unwell over the past few days, i have taken him to the vets, he had a high temp so he had an injection for that...but also got some paste and antibiotics as he has very loose poos...his toilet do's are more like someone turning a tap on, thankfully he is now on the mend and the vet thinks that he must have picked up a bug along with teething, but has advised that i change his food. I would like some advice on feeding, he's on Bakers complete dry food, 100g 3 times a day, he weighs 15kg, i wonder if this is too rich for him??? I would be extrenely grateful for any advice as I am now becoming distraught

Sadly that's not a good food at all.  What kind of line is he from working or show?

Couldn't agree more with the previous poster - I wouldn't touch Bakers, it's known for its additives :(

I feed mine on James Wellbeloved at the moment, but have also used Arden Grange, and various others. Did the breeder that you got him from use Bakers?

I think the vet is right in this case - Bakers isn't the ideal food.  Do you need to buy from a supermarket or do you have a pet shop nearby?  It's worth choosing a good food but for your convenience do choose one that you can get hold of easily.

If you want to have a look around at what is available to you - you can always check it out with users on here.  Remember to choose a brand that does a puppy food, it's easier to stick with the same brand then when you move to adult food.

I like Arden Grange and it's easy to get online and much cheaper too.  They do a puppy food in chicken and rice. Try vetuk for competitive prices. 

Poo ... Bakers. No more said.

If you got him from a breeder, I'd give them a call to see what food they'd recommend. That's usually a good starting point. You'll get millions of different recommendations on here, which is good, though confusing, specially if you're feeding Bakers. Sorry, said I'd say no more ;-)

Hope the poo stops being tap like quite quickly!

The breeder i bought him from fed the litter Eukanuba, we found the price though was rather off putting.

I would deffinately advise a change of food. Bakers is pretty rubbish stuff, and not something i would ever feed or reccomend for a growing pup.

I wouldn't feed Eukanuba either, but each to thier own. If price is a factor in what you choose, then id say look online at http://www.csjk9.com/range/ thier 'champ' range is very affordable and has produced good results for dogs of people i know.

It may be that he could have picked a bug up and his looseness is not diet related, but im pretty sure if my three were fed on bakers they would be pretty loose as well itchy and probably rather hyper.
Even if it turns out the problem is not diet related, i would still advise switching foods, springers are enough of a handfull without being fed a food full of additives and colourings.

Price does need to be a consideration but it's worth identifying the cost of feeding a poor quality diet.  One thing you might find is that you can feed less of a better quality food.  Compare the ingredients.

You also do need to have your dog on a puppy food, not one for adults.  Bakers puppy food is £2.21 per kilo (Tesco).  Arden Grange puppy is £2.55 (VetUK).  Eukanuba puppy £3.25 (VetUK).

There are plenty of mid range priced foods like Arden Grange, CSJ, Challenge that will give you the results you want, at a price you can afford.  Hark at me I sound like an advert!!

Truth is, well fed dogs are often calmer dogs to live with.  Imagine feeding a child on Smarties and McDonalds - Bakers is a bit like that.  It has been known to produce a hyper-dog.  OK for an occasional treat but not terribly good long term.

Even Vitalin now do a new range with speciifed ingredients and higher than most levels of meat meal.

i know this might sound mad,but do you have cats in or around the house? i had the same problem with my 3 month old dog ,turned out he'd ate some cat poo apparently its very attractive to pups as its high in protein,i moved the cat box and problem solved,our vet says they do grow out of it,but it did make him very poorly..hope your wee one is better soon
