Have just bought 4 hens and a nice moveable coop so currently very impressed with myself!! However I'm not very experienced so would appreciate any tips! My main question is what will I clean it out with? It has a removable sliding tray under the perches and I'd like to know before I cause the birds damage by using the wrong cleaning stuff. Thanks

Congratulations on your new hens. We have three, Julie,Matilda and Linda and on most days get an egg from all three. Pets at Home now sell everything you need to keep them healthy. We have had ours for just over a year now and love to watch them they are very amusing to watch. They follow me around the garden and absolutley love Marmite on toast.

buy katie thears book 'starting with hens'.  its only cheap but will tell you the basics you need to know.
chickens aren't differcult to look after but there are a few pitfalls that can get beginers so a guide book would be good idea for welfare of your new girls.
for hen feed/products find your local horse feed supplier-they will usually have poultry stuff -and a far better selection then pet shops with more knowledgeable staff.

i have a fair few hens , this is what i do at least weekly, more often if needed.
sweep out all the shavings, spray house out with red mite killer , put in new shavings. job done.
if something real grotty you want to fetch off spot of warm soapy water will do it but don't leave hen house soaking wet inside-they don't mind odd grubby mark-they do mind damp house

mine love tinned sweetcorn!if you have a nice garden and you let them out ,they will wreck it,but theyl eat the bugs and slugs,and love scratching around!I treat mine to maggots from the fishing tackle shop occasionally.hope you go on alright with them!

Well I have them 8 days now and they're thriving. They love being out and about and eat alot!! I'm giving them layers mash with maize in the morning. Layers pellets with rolled oats in the evening. The dogs spent 3 days looking at them, my saint bernard was particularly taken with them!! They are getting nice and big anyway and I'm hoping they will start laying in the coming 3 to 4 weeks.
